View Full Version : Deer Season
Any one taken one during bow season? I took a doe over the weekend (along with a hog and a turkey). I can imagine at least a couple of you hunt, so lets hear what you got or see some pics if you're comfortable with that.

I shot an 80# sow with my bow a couple of months ago but I'm not shooting deer at my place...we had a fence neighbor in the past that leased to guys that shot anything that moved...they gave it up when the county went to antler restriction last year and we all (me and 3 other neighbors) agreed to give the deer a rest for a couple of years and let the herd recover.

Don't know anything about hunting.....what is an antler restriction?

Certain counties have antler restriction, normally like 13" or so far outside the ears. Otherwise people shoot anything and you don't get a decent buck population.

Went deer hunting once--but only managed to bag a few quail and doves. I have done the wild boar thing on Catalina Island and out in the middle of California, but haven't ever came close to bagging a deer. Maybe one day...I do prefer fishing though.

I spent 10 years in alaska and hunted mostly in the Fogneck Island just out of Kodiak AK.. We were dropped off by a seaplane and survived 7 to 10 days with a 70 lb backback until the pilot could land and pick us up ....depends on the weather when he come after us and no communication at all .Most white tails there fiield dressed close to 185/200 lbs...big deer but never had the balls to go after the kodiak or grizzelys . I used a 7mag Remmington and colt python 357 for back up and both of mine weapons where the smallest in our group of four guys that did a annual hunt . They had transfered 300 texicans to start up the prudhoe bay field and first thing we asked for was a deer lease and felt like fools because There are no leases to sign up due to that 90 per cent of the state is federal land and if you fly in you must wiat 24 hours to shoot anything ? Back in thday when i was young and dumb . Deer hanging 100 yards from our camp and bear that normally hung out in the higer part of the island

My dad has a place near Three Rivers and he said his herd is doing very well, with a few glimpses of some huge bucks already. He said dove hunting was crap this year but the deer season is already looking great.

How could anyone kill a deer unless it really was about eating to survive?

I could never kill an animal just for the hell of it, that sucks!
How could anyone kill a deer unless it really was about eating to survive?
It depends on shot placement mostly. Shot selection is important (meaning when to shoot) but placement, I've found, is the biggest factor. So with a good 2 or 3 bladed broadhead, A compound bow (or a recurve or even a longbow or self bow), you should be able to kill one up to 60 yards. I wouldn't take a shot at one over about 30 yards however due to them jumping the string and causing a misplaced hit or just a miss. With a rifle, you can just bust a shoulder and down it goes. You might have to finish it off by cutting the throat or putting one in it's head (make sure you use a centerfire cartridge, rimfires are illegal even for finishing one off).
So as you can see, it's not technically hard to kill one. It's the hunt that's the harder part. Bowhunting is more challenging, a lot more to consider, but overall it's just a cow that's a bit jumpier.

Son, that's how you got here.
Anyhow, only a neanderthal would sit in a tree to hunt a deer. I make my own ghille suits and sit right out in the open. They never notice, and I can actually touch one with an arrow if they were close enough.

That's alpha shit right there. Next time, see if you can stick a clown nose on one.

So you get a nut killing a harmless creature that has no idea what's going on? Talk about a stud, wow! That's suppose to be some sort of challenge?
I'm looking at the fish in the aquarium, what a challenge it would be to take out my pocketnife and kill a few fish. Then head off to the parrot and stab it, wow what a rush!
I am cool with fishing however.

son, in order for you to eat someone went out and killed that animal just like a hunter would. except it's entire existence up until that point was much worse than the life of one in the wild, penned up in captivity and in shitty cramped living conditions. just because you don't have the balls or ability to go out and feed yourself doesn't mean that it's a bad thing to do.

son I'm talking about all the douche bag white boys who brag about hunting as if it takes talent or special skills in order to wake up at 3am and sit in a deer stand. now if you're out there on foot, with a bow and arrow or something ... then I'll give you some props, but 90% of hunters are cowards about it. I'm also referring to those who consider it a game or a sport rather than a source of food.

son you know absolutely nothing. I have hunted before and have killed deer before. I was also very young as a teenager before growing up and knowing any better just how childish it is. Again ... don't get me mixed up with those who are truly hunting for FOOD. I am blasting the fools who act as if it is "fun" and a "sport" and brag about how many deer they killed, how many racks they have on their walls, etc. to those people ... grow the fuck up.

You don't know shit. Shooting an animal is not the same as hunting. Anyone can pull a trigger. Let's see you go out and find a specific animal, get close enough to make a clean shot with a bow and actually harvest that animal. You couldn't sneak up on a deaf bear in the winter much less stalk a buck during the rut.
Have you ever killed a deer with a bow and arrow?
If not, why the props?
People like you need to stick to making shitty bets and running your face on your multiple online accounts and leave the Alpha shit to people like me.

agreed that bow hunting is much more skillful and something i'd like to try someday, i'm also interested in the sport of hunting a wild hog with nothing but a knife or a small spear and a couple of hunting dogs. hogs can be up to 400lbs in texas and those things can and do kill people, it takes some serious balls to hunt them that way.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jUA7xIH-og
The bow hunt is much harder than the hog hunt with dogs. The dogs hold the pig down while you stab it. Harrowing, but not hard. Try stalking a pig, that's hard. That's how I met Cantthinkofanything's mom.

oh and I have hunted with both a gun and a bow when a teenager. I've spent my fair share of time hunting back then and like I mentioned above as most people get older and educate themselves, they realize just how silly and childish hunting as a "sport" truly is. now if you're stocking up your ice box with meat for your family then more power to you, but you seem to ignore me when I have stated that numerous times in here. you must be one of those guys who likes to brag about killing dem 9 points and mounting that sonbitch!

it ain't even that easy imho, if you're not quick and skillful you could lose a dog, a 300lb hog ain't no joke. i've seen video of them charging out of the brush and rushing a person only for them to quickly react and shoot it just before it reaches them and save their life by the skin of their teeth. those pigs are surprisingly agile and vicious. and if the pig squirms loose you can get bit or worse trying to stab it, you have to wrestle the hog into a safe position too. it's not as easy as it looks unless they're little hogs.
lol son have you even read my post in this thread?
Sure. Something about whitey and big dicks.

lol DMC with the usual ignorance ... son you don't have to be so angry. I also never said that I "used to hunt all the time". again putting words in my mouth. I said that I have had my fair share of hunting experiences when I was a kid and as most people get older and educated, they realize how silly it is to consider hunting a sport. I get it though. you're a big hunter and it makes you feel good attempting to justify why it is a sport. why does it have to be a sport for it to be fun/useful? i don't consider hunting, hiking, fishing, kayaking, running to be sports but i like doing it.

Talk about being a pussy there ya go. A real man realizes the mismatch he doesn't need to watch some poor animal die. Wow dude you can kill a deer, what a stud.
