I need to cut and convert a piece of video out of a recorded TV program, but don't know whether to use mpeg4, xvid, wmv, x264...
has any of these established itself as the mainstream universal video codec yet?

nope. xvid is probably the most widely supported, since a lot of standalone DVD players support it too and on desktop computers you can get a free viewer like VLC.

But you might hit a snag if you need to play it on certain devices (say iPad).

Yeah I've been seeing alot less xvid files and more x264 and MP4 type files which really annoys me because for one I like downloading avi files because they play pretty much on any device and are also great for ripping into a dvd without it taking double the amount of time an mp4 file would take.

BTW I use ConvertXtoDVD. Love that little program.

A PC with VLC will play anything, so that's not the problem. It gets muddier when you want to play on standalone or portable devices.

I personally like and use SMplayer more but VLC is good. Only use it for MKV files though.

plus I hate having all these devices on and gulping power. That is why I have a NAS to host all of my movies/music and a wdtv live plus player to play them all (I have not found a file it doesn't play yet).

For mkv files on the ps3, I just use mkv2vob. Most of the time, it doesn't convert them, it just transcodes them which is a minute long process on my shitty laptop.

Does it keep the subs and all?

MKV files often are used to store subs along with the movie file. Converting them would usually delete, or not convert the subs.

Can that program keep all all files untouch when transcoding it?

well just looked up the program. it is indeed fast. it also says on its settings you can check the box where it wont forget the subtitles.

Very cool program. I downloaded it myself and tried it.

It plays on the PS3 just fine.

Still messing around with it but so far the subs are nowhere to be found.
