A 1.2 million square feet warehouse at a cost of $166 million to build.

just saw this last night. It is going to make it really hard to justify purchasing stuff at a regular store now.

I told my wife and she felt the same way.

Music to my ears. I shop via Amazon for the majority of my purchases. Wish it was happening in time for this Christmas. :lol

Amazon is simply the new wal-mart. I make sure I don't buy anything from them because I know just how shitty of a company it is (I was a manager at their warehouse in Ky) and how awful they treat lower-tier employees (associates, lol)

I realize it's a good company for the consumer, much like wal-mart, but it's also anti-labor/anti decent pay/and bullies states that are desperate for jobs into kowtowing to their demands, also much like wal-mart

However, I don't hold it against people who shop there because providing for yourself/family at low prices is paramount. I just choose to spend my money elsewhere. Those with a conscience and the means should too, imo

Good bye Best Buy

i was talking to a friend about this but i was telling him that i didnt want to buy tv from amazon. i would rather buy them at bb because i can look at it and buy it and not wait for it.
in any case, i dont want to buy electronics online. i guess i am old fashion. so hopefully bb just reorganizes

I wasn't badly treated, but hourly employees were. As for being passed up, I wasn't there long enough to find out. I started looking for something better within 6 mos of being there, and bounced as soon as I got a sufficiently improved offer over what I had at the time. I'm not bitter about it or anything, just telling the truth about how they operate and why I spend my money elsewhere.

Strange, because everyone I have ever dealt with at Amazon (I am assuming they were hourly as they were just order support/phone techs) seemed to be really into their job and provided excellent service.

I agree with this. And I think most people still want to be able to compare TV's and other electronics. But will that be enough for Best Buy to stay open?

BB is now used for window shopping. You go to get a look at the TV's, compare them side by side, then your actual purchase is online.

I don't know if they still do it, but their 18 months with no interest was not a bad deal either. I think Capitol One took over HSBC though so I don't know if they kept it.

Well with same day delivery, especially to save $$$, that might not be an issue*

*not sure if same day delivery would apply to electronics or not

Then don't, there are so many options to not pay shipping on amazon....

I prefer one option.....no shipping cost.

Cool, then order from amazon and don't pay shipping. There is the super saver if you order over 25 bucks from amazon fulfillment. There is also amazon prime which gives free 2 day shipping (or $4 1 day shipping). It is free for a year for mom's or students and 40 bucks after that. Prime also gives you free amazon video's on demand...

As I said, don't want to pay shipping with amazon, then order with amazon and don't pay shipping.

Great, I offered you two options to not pay at all for shipping. One forever and one for a year.

Either way I guess it doesn't really affect me. Saving time and money aren't really for everyone.

I buy tons of shit on amazon personally and for my company. Hell, last week I bought shit like norton sand paper rolls and 300w quartz light bulbs on amazon. UPS is cheap on the stuff I can't get free shipping on as opposed to sending a $25 an hour employee to Home depot. The price is better and the convenience factor (if you have your shit together and order ahead) is tons better than brick and mortar stores.

Glad to know the distribution jobs will be local.

I'm sure their sales took a hit when they started charging tax. This seems like a nice way to alleviate that.

Yeah, no shit. I was resigned to Obama getting elected but THAT prek4sa shit still pisses me off. Castro could spend all they wanted to campaign for it but there was no "against" funding for ads and signs. I just kept hoping that enough people were paying attention to realize what a fucked up boondoggle that was but I was obviously wrong.

Because its not a fucked up boondoggle just because you hate paying taxes.

I've been a prime member for 5 years but I'm canceling my membership next month. Now that Texas is taxed I would rather just pick up what I want from a local store. Plus I hate getting new release games past 6pm.

Pretty sure in the deal Amazon worked out with the state of Texas that Amazon agreed to start collecting sales tax and promised to build a distribution center in Texas.

I still use it quite a bit. Even if I have to pay sales tax, I sit at my computer and order it; select free shipping; and it shows up on my doorstep. I would have to pay sales tax if I bought it here, and this way I save money on gas, plus my time.

most of these distribution centres operate or generate profit on how much volume they can turnover....

I ordered a Kindle Fire on Monday and got it Wednesday. No free shipping though. It costs me like $7.00 and what was odd is that 2 day shipping was much more and would have gotten here on same day.

You should check out Powells Book Store (http://www.powells.com/). It's a local business here in Portland. They have a separate building filled with technical books. At least you would be supporting a local business instead of a corporate entity.

I checked it, but Amazon is generally a lot cheaper, has a much better selection, and they donate a portion of the money I pay to MIT OpenCourseWare (my favorite charity) if I go to the site from MIT's (my price is still the same).

They don't actually ship. It just gets registered to ship. That's how they get their shipping rates low. They fill up a truck then actually ship it.

Fucking amazon charges me tax now, so that's a bummer, but not a deal breaker on many things.

What pisses me off is seeing the Sennheiser HD650's for $430 today when I bought them for $475 on Cyber Monday, and that was supposed to be a deal. Fuckers.

Online retailer Amazon may have broken antitrust laws in Germany by banning third-party traders from selling their products cheaper elsewhere, officials said Wednesday.

The probe comes days after Amazon faced criticism in Germany over the alleged mistreatment of temporary workers and in the wake of accusations in the U.K. that it's been avoiding paying tax.

The Seattle-based company has recently been dealing with the fallout from a German television documentary which alleged that some of its temporary workers in the country faced intimidation by security guards, random searches and constant pressure to increase their performance.

Like I said earlier in this thread, it's an awful company. Nothing will be done about it stateside, however, because $11 an hour is a "good" job in this shitty economy.

What it boils down to is that the American consumer demands the absolute rock bottom price on everything, and they could care less if you pay chimpanzees with bananas as long as they get their shit cheap.
