Interesting thread.

The first great black running back in the NFL was a cat out of Compton JC named Joe Perry. They called him "The Jet" for obvious reasons. He was the first back to have consecutive 1000 yards seasons and when he retired he was the All Time leading rusher and is still number 28 today. He was a Niner.

The first great running back out of one of those HBCU schools was a cat named J.D.Smith. He was drafted as a db, but once inthe NFL he was switched to running back, he was out of NCA&T, One season he actually outgained Jimmy Brown. He was a glider, much like Arian Fosrer, Chris Warren. He was also a Niner.

The first real speedy/quick/agile/elusive running back was a little tiny guy named Buddy Young out of Illinois. He was 5-4 around 170 pounds and fast, he was an NCAA/AAU 100 champ. So when we see all these black backs with those gifts they possess it all started with Buddy Young.
