View Full Version : OT: Shootaround etiquette?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if you're about to play a pickup game with a group of guys at a rec center, private gym or YMCA, if it's pre-game warmup, you "keep the change" if you make it. If you miss, it's a "free" ball. Correct?
And if it's just a bunch of guys shooting around and everybody has a ball or access to one and you're not about to play a game, you leave the other guys alone and if you do rebound one of their misses, you pass it back to them and vice-versa?
Last night I go to the YMCA where I normally work out. I go to the basketball court and there's three teenagers shooting around. I find a ball and start shooting. Two of the kids rebound my misses and pass it back to me and I do the same for them. There's another ball on the other side of the court. The third kid rebounds one of my misses, starts doing crossover dribbles for about 30 seconds, then heads up to the 3-point arc and launches a shot that misses. I'm thinking to myself "Uh, okay."
Next time I miss, he does it again. He's not rebounding the misses off the other guys and shooting with their balls. Third time he does this, I'm like "What the fuck is this?" I follow him out to the three-point line, and cleanly block the shot when he tries to shoot it, then I go and run down the ball. When I miss a fourth time, he gets my ball again and starts out towards one of the wings. I start walking towards him and he goes from walking and dribbling to moving more at game speed. He's shielding his body and dribbling away from me. I say to him "Gimme the ball," grab him by the waist to stop his dribble and progress, move him out of the way a little bit and take the ball from him. I didn't punch him or strike him in any way, and I've dished out much harder fouls in actual games.
He leaves and returns five minutes later with three YMCA employees. The employee says to me "Is there a problem?" I tell him "No." He asks me what happened. I start to try to explain and the kid starts bawling and crying and says "You didn't ask me for the ball first. You violently threw me to the ground." :rolleyes
I don't like the way this is headed so I say "Screw this, that's not how it happened. I'm leaving." I find it hard to believe the kid didn't know basic shootaround etiquette and I thought he was punking me.

I didn't understand what the big deal was. Then again I didn't understand why he kept shooting off my misses when there was another ball in the gym he could avail himself of.

tbh it sounds like the kid was being a jackass, but that's what kids do. tbh probably would have been easier to just let him have that ball and get another ball. If he keeps it up then there's no doubt he was trying to be a dick to you.
It's always a bonus to make some punkass kid cry tho :lol

although usually i will just bring my own ball to the gym to avoid crap like that. Then if some kid tries that shit i have a legit reason to go HAM on them.

Yeah, but the Larry David in me is fixated on who is "right" in the situation and since I already had a ball, I felt like the solution was for him to go grab the idle one laying on the ground instead of me.

When he rolled in with the YMCA employees, at that point I was worried that they were going to call the police and try some absurd shit like report me for assault. I did touch him, even though I didn't strike him or cause him any sort of injury besides a bruised vajayjay.

Son of course you're right but getting physical with a random kid is never the right thing to do tbh. Just tell him to get another ball or get yourself one.

Yeah, afterwards I was thinking to myself "How stupid of me to lay a hand on him since he's a minor." Kids can push your buttons though. It was on those days, I wanted to shoot some baskets and blow off steam and I was not in the mood to be messed around with.

It's not that he was a minor actually, even if he was your age.Not worth it.Just tell him to gtfo or pick up another ball.Physical has to be your last resort.

Yeah, no you were wrong to go after him. Perhaps a quiet talk about shoot around etiquette when you break to choose up teams. Or just call "Ball!" when he rebounds your made shot.

:D
But yeah, etiquette is just that. It's not rules. Grabbing someone is about rules, especially a kid.
The shootaround etiquette you described and go by is right. The way you reacted to a little nigga not following it is not. I mean imagine if your nephew or son gets shoved by an adult because he wasnt giving the ball back to him after misses, wouldnt you be pissed ?

I think this is a good place to repost my story about me punching a kid:
So, I'm playing Tennis next to a high school. There's a bunch of high school kids standing right next to the fence of the courts. After a little while, they start
yelling every time I about to hit the ball. I get a little more pissed every time they yell, but I try to let it go. However, I start losing, which makes me even more mad.
Eventually, I just can't stand it anymore - I drop my racket, jump the fence, and walk/run towards the group of kids. They all scatter, except one(the alpha male, apparently).
I get to him, and he just looks at me - and smirks. That pushed me over the edge.
I go right to him, and punch him in the stomach - he falls on the ground and starts crying. At the point I more or less realize what I just did.....
I jump the fence back, get my rackets, get into my car and get the fuck out of there.
Moral of the story - sometimes kids need to punched.
Unless the kid was obviously being a dick, that was a little over the top imho

I agree, I felt pretty shamed once I calmed down. Still, when you're that age(high school), you should know that in the real world, certain situations
can result in a whoop ass - so hopefully he at least learned a lesson.

once i almost got in a fight at the ymca tbh, some douchebag who was like one of the all district players in mansfield and super cocky like blocked my shot and in some fake alpha trying to show off outburts yells "get that shit out bitch!" right in my face and starts running the other way down the court, i chased him down and shoulder checked him to the floor and was like whats up bitch but he wouldn't fight :lol and ymca workers and players ran in and broke it up

also do shootaround myself n i normally make half of the shots i attempt, not too impressive but that's fine enough for the amateur level imho and im sick of the other guys who also go shooting around in the park only to hear the bricking, and to embarrass themselves. shooting 1/10 in practice is more of a shame then bullying kids imho
