“Military City USA” is not just a name anymore — it's a number, and a big one.
The military is San Antonio's top economic engine, producing an impact of $27.7 billion last year, a study released Thursday said. That's more than double its $13.3 billion impact in 2006.
The report by the city's economic development department documented how major a force the military has become, looking at its hiring, investment and spending. It went beyond the Defense Department's contribution, adding in the impact driven by contractors, retirees and businesses that cater to the military.
By comparison, San Antonio's health care and biosciences sector produced an economic punch of $24.5 billion in 2009, and the financial services sector's economic impact was estimated at $20.5 billion in 2004.
The hospitality sector had a $12.2 billion impact last year.
