In each of the following races the victor beat the opponent on one quality by a long shot. Do you know what it was?

Reagan Carter
Reagan Mondale
Bush Dukakis
Clinton Bush
Clinton Dole
Bush Gore
Bush Kerry
Obama McCain
Obama Romney

People who voted for them for president in a combination of states whose electoral college total exceeded their opponents.

I'm guessing money spent or fundraising.

I would say Charisma, except Bush (43) has none.

If I had to guess, I would say fundraising.

Without looking, Ohio is likely the correct answer. It's a fun game though, I'm not going to spoil it by "googling" anything.

Closest...Likability. You would be wrong to say people didn't personally like Bush 43 though. Here's an 04 article discussing dubya's likability...

And here is the primary reason Romney lost as stated by his own campaign...

“We’re not going to win a personality contest. It’s not an election for class president. It’s who can best solve the problems of the country,” said Romney’s own pollster, Neil Newhouse. “Likability isn’t fixing the economy or helping the middle class make ends meet.”

You can't win in american politics if you don't understand american politics. Step one is connect with the american people, can't win without doing it especially against an incumbent who is personally very well liked. Romney never even tried to do the most important thing.

Makes sense, and I agree. Charisma and likability aren't quite the same. A person that is perceived to have no fault is less likable than someone with faults, who people can connect with.

I guess it depends on what likability stems from.

criminal, bitter, vindictive, disgraced Repug (is there any other kind of Repug?) Tricky Dick Nixon was more likable than Hubert Humphrey or George McGovern?

Duh. The obvious commonality is that in each pairing the winner's name is always listed first.
