NBA Sets Record Attendance
NEW YORK, June 27, 2005 – The 2005 NBA Finals resulted in the all-time attendance record for a Finals series with 141,416 fans attending the seven game series between the San Antonio Spurs and Detroit Pistons.
The new record eclipsed the previous all-time recorded mark of 138,357 fans attending the 1999 NBA Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and New York Knicks.
Overall, The Finals contributed to a record-breaking season in 2004-05 for NBA attendance with the league setting the highest average attendance in history and the highest total attendance for combined regular and postseason games.
This year’s average attendance of 17,454 fans per game topped the 1995-96 record of 17,341 fans per game and last season’s average of 17,195.
The new total attendance record of 22,935,057 this season eclipsed the previous record of 21,855,125 established last season and the 1995-96 total of 21,797,222 fans attending regular and postseason games.
The 2005 NBA Playoffs featured a record 81 sellouts, eclipsing the previous all-time recorded mark of 69 sellouts established during the 2003 NBA Playoffs.
