I am pretty sure most of you saw the halftime piece on Bruce Bowen and his childhood and how it was pretty rough. He did have an external family that obviously did a great job of instilling values and ethic in him.

Tony Parker made a reference to watching BB play in France when he (Parker) was 12 years old. He joked that Bruce didn't play any defense, he was all offense then. It was true. In Europe BB was primarily an offensive threat. He bounced around the world playing wherever he could get a paycheck and finally made his way back to the states and became a defensive specialist in the NBA with the Miami Heat.

Bruce took a modest contract to play on the Spurs. He wasn't going to get a lot of money anywhere because you generally didn't see him doing spectacular dunks on SportsCenter or read about him from the likes of Vescey, Ric Bucher, Stephen A. Smith, etc..... NBA management knew about him and what he brought to the table but defense doens't land you big contracts unless you block shots.

Bowen took the contract and worked his ass off and became the best perimeter defender that you never heard about outside of San Antonio. He got a ring in 2003. He got a better contract.

You also began to hear more about him not from the national writers or the talking heads on Sports Center but from guys like Vince Carter and Ray Allen. What they had to say wasn't flattering either. But Bruce kept doing what he does and getting better at it.

While his reputation on the floor grew keep in mind Bowen got a a degree at UTSA, led a clean life, became the leading spokesperson on the roster for this team and showed that despite what your background is like, the measure of a man is in his heart and his work ethic and when you have those in abundance, you can accomplish great things.

If I ever met Bruce personally, I would tell him he is a helluva a man. Not that he is a great player or I love to watch him and the Spurs play. I would tell him a respect him for who he is and what is inside of him.

DROB had a positive influence on Bowen as he did on majority of teammates he ever played with.

Now we need T.Ratliff on our roster & we'll be set.

Bowen is a guy anyone could hang with and have a few beers.Ofcourse, thats if he doesn't start swatting them off your hand. Very likable personality. I liked when he went to the podium. He is SO funny looking.

Have you all noticed that when he gets called for a foul he always shrugs.ALWAYS!
You know the "what did I do" shrug.

The Rash has been a favorite of mine since he made a dribbling Michael Jordan fall down and fall again and then he drove it on bowen and still had to give it up

granted jordan was like 40, but still....bruce owned him hahaha

Not to mention, he took a pay cut this year so the Spurs could sign Manu and Tony.

Bruce was offered a 3 year deal for the MLE by Portland in 2001. He turned it down to sign with the Spurs for $700,000.

Bruce was a PR major, wasn't he? He needs to start cashing in his local popularity with some endorsements. He deserves it, and who wouldn't want him to be the face of their business?

Yep, Bruce is very well spoken. Should make the all-interview team (or whatever). :)

Not mentioned yet: Bruce has yet to miss a game in the last three years (including playoffs), the only Spur to do so.

He is one tough hombre. Oh, yeah, and he speaks Spanish!

He has a little one on the way too, and he has to feel good about being able to provide everything that was missing in his childhood to his young'n

True.

He also opted out of the last year of his contract this past summer to make sure they had enough $ to get Manu and Tony signed before negotiating his contract. He did get a rewarded with a longer term deal by doing that though.

He doesn't drink (or cuss), but I know what you mean.

Bowen is a guy who had a really rough time growing up, but surrounding himself with good people. When playing in France he was a selfish scorer and didn't have the best rep off the court. But he has turned out to be a really amazing guy who found his faith and found a niche on basketball court.

I know everyone thinks that he'll get a PR job or something in player recruitment with the Spurs when his playing career is over. But I'd really love him to be an assistant coach.

Are you serious?

Maybe he can get an endorsement with Hasbro Toys to help them sell more "Mr. Potato Head"s :)
