The timing is surprising as he is one of the few healthy wings available. Kawhi and Jack are already out, and Green's hammy went whammy last night. That leaves Manu and Anderson as right sized wings.
Maybe this is one of those quick down and up assignments to get him a game or two of playing time. SA doesn't have a game until Wednesday.

It's likely only an one game assignment and Nando won't miss a single Spurs' game. Spurs next game is Wednesday and Toros have a game today.
And I like this move. Nando will have a game where he will be able to take 20 shots without consequences and it will help him to stay in game shape.

Interesting.
My guess is that it'll just be for today's game. There's a break in Spurs action so might as well throw De Colo out for a few minutes in Austin. Getting up 10-15 shots could really help him find his rhythm.
I can't imagine it's for more than one game since Green, Kawhi and Jackson are injured.
Edit: I got Bruno'ed.

Did you not just read what Bruno posted? Wait and see what happens before you jump off the cliff. It's like a glorified practice for him and by what I've seen so far this season, he could use as many of those as he can get.

Nobody's jumping off any cliffs. Just didn't seem like something to be thrilled about on the surface, and all I said was I wasn't a fan of it. Sure, if it ends up being a game, no big deal. But since there's been no report or announcement regarding the duration of his time there, we can't be absolutely sure. It does make sense with our injury situation to keep him around, so I hope the one game theory holds true.

We have too many back up PGs tbh, we only really need two out of Nando/Mills/Cojo, especially since they arent that good, I don't get why they picked up Cojo's option tbh.
The problem with Nando is that he's not a very good fit next to Manu, that's like a double TO threat and shooting wise that's not good enough...
I know full well that starting units don't matter quite as much as closing units but I wonder if we should start Manu again, the logic behind making him come off the bench is maximising the number of his touches but I think lowering his touches a bit would increase the quality of his play at this point, especially if he doesn't have to play PG.
Duncan - Splitter
Diaw - SJax
Kawhi - Anderson
Manu - Nando
TP - Neal or Mills
I think Nando + Anderson could provide plenty of playmaking. Then the choice between Neal and Mills would depend on who they have to guard. I don't like Splitter Diaw either as a combination.
Boris also plays arguabvly better at SF but our PFs suck to much to make it a regular thing unless we get someone else.

the reason we are carrying all these point guards is because there's a solid shot neal will walk after the year to chase a bigger role. De Colo and Joseph are the 2 guys the organization is high on for the future, but since they're vastly unproven they are also hanging onto Mills because he's more of a known quantity. although based on his play early this year, i doubt he's coming back again, as long as de colo and CoJo progress as expected

Needs some layup practice. It's hard in this league to get to the hoop so when you do, don't dawdle around with a surprise pass. Shoot it youngster.

Not too surprised. De Colo has been "shitting the bed" so to speak lately. Too many negatives and not enough positives. De Colo seems like a very raw player despite being in his mid 20's. He wil benefit from extra playing time, not to mention less stress of absolutely having to make every play count while playing with the big team.
I think De Colo has potential, so I'm glad we have him, but he's been underperforming. I expect JA will get more time now with Green out, and we'll see more Mills and Neal at PG. JA doesn't blow anyone's doors off, but he doesn't seem to make too many mistakes at least the way De Colo does.
Looking forward to seeing De Colo back, and in a good mental state in the near future. If he can become more consistent with his ball handling and playmaking. . .and with his shooting, I think we might have something with him.

I wouldn't read much into one game. It's like those who judged Joseph last year after looking at a couple of box scores. Players like those are sent down to the Toros specifically to change their games and focus on parts of their game that are not strong. Mills scored a ton of points in the D-League because scoring is one of his strong suits. Instructing De Colo to look for his own juimper is unnatural for him so there can be issues.
jestersmash
12-02-2012, 05:26 PM
I'm willing to overlook De Colo's poor shooting (although he nearly airballed a wide open 3 point attempt). It's just strange to see him so ineffective against terrible players. He's clearly not a 1 on 1 kind of point guard who can create opportunities for others (and for himself) off the dribble. He relies on people setting good picks for him and his team having good spacing overall.
Cory Joseph on the other hand looks pretty solid.

Scoring is his strength, so that is no surprise that he lit it up in the D-League when he was last there.
Patrick's weakness is ball handing and passing. If he was only better in those areas he could be getting a lot more court time.

I'm not sure why fans call him Patty. His nickname started in college when he played for St Mary's, and ever since then, the nickname stuck. Almost everyone nowadays calls him Patty. I think Mills is the only player in the NBA to have his nickname (Patty) as his name on his NBA.com profile, as well as the Spurs NBA TV Companion.

First of all, my wife calls him Patty Melt. Thought that was what she heard from Bill on TV broadcast.
As for Nando and Cory at the Toros, I watch the game on here and think that this was an attempt to see if De Colo could if called on handle a SF without size. At 6-5, he is a huge PG, tall SG and short SF. The Toros played a lot of 3 guard rotations. Both De Colo and Joseph saw alot of court time with Dentmon and Kelly. I think Pop just wanted game time for both and get a look at whether De Colo could play limited time at SF. This makes me wonder if Green may have more than tightness in his legs.

Yes, rookies.
• Players with three years of service or less can be assigned to the D-League. (It was two years' experience in the previous CBA.)
• A player can be assigned to the D-League an unlimited number of times after a limit of three in the previous CBA.
• Players continue to receive their NBA salary while assigned to the D-League. This was also the case under the previous CBA, but ESPN The Magazine's Ric Bucher reported recently that the league was pushing for players to be paid at D-League salary rates while under assignment.
• Players with more than three years' experience can be assigned to the D-League -- for example, for injury rehabilitation -- but only when the player and the union request the assignment. Under the previous CBA, players with more than two years' experience could not be assigned to the D-League no matter what.

It would show that ORIGINALLY he wasn't too happy with going(if he was upset about it). I'm NOT talking about how he feels about it now(Because I'm not sure if there is an interview out on that yet), I'm talking about how it seemed like he felt about it back when he was being interviewed about it.

"I remember his saying he wasn't here to play in the D-League (could be wrong). Not quite the same as saying he was going to be a bitch about being assigned."
I didn't say he wasn't going to bitch originally, until you describe it as that, if you look at what I originally said, I was just hoping that he wouldn't be upset and see this as a lane for improvement.
Although I did say "I know he isn't happy about that." But that's just how I talk at times, of course it's not a fact. Then I made a joke about him turning into Steve Blake and fighting his own teammates, but again it was a joke.

I doubt De Colo bitched about going to Austin for one game. Pop likely sat down and explained to him that Danny Green might miss(which he is) a game or two. With Kawhi and SJax out, we need to know how you would fair at SF for limited minutes. So the trip was to get minutes as well as see what he could do at SF. De Colo said he would rather stay in Europe than come to SA and play in Dleague. Ryan said he would rather be in Dleague than in Europe. De Colo understands what is expected of him. Time on the court at Austin, translates to time on the court at SA.

De Colo looks like he's hit a bit of a rookie wall the last few games. Hopefully this'll allow him to play through it, as he was starting to look promising prior to Neal's injury.

It sounds again like an one game stint for today's game.
Edit: it's confirmed by a journalist close to De Colo.

flipping NDC back and forth with Toros so he can play more is strong indication Pop thinks NDC is worth developing.

Well with Manu probably gone next season there will be room for him to play a big part.
