New Orleans is expected to change their name to the Pelicans possibly by next season. The Bobcats might become the Hornets again.

Maybe the NBA should have saved their intervention for this name change. The pelicans are in ,my opinion, the worst nickname in any of sport (The Dolphins are off the hook).

At least they got Anthony Davis...but at what cost.

Its got to be a joke. New Orleans Pelicans.
I hear the new owner owns the rights to the Pelicans name, but did he ever wonder why it was available for sale in the first place?

Mighty DUCKS YES! Texans is bad but not quite. Raptors is bad as well lol! Pelicans is just horrible and I feel bad for the City because the team sucks and will for a while and now they have to deal with that name lol. Poor guys.

BTW Charlotte Bobcats is a bad name too IMO.

Most of you are too young to remember the old Southern Association(not southern league) in minor league baseball. They were the New Orleans Pelicans. Old man Benson owns the rights to the name. As for it being bad name, Why? Because you dont like it? To me the dumbest name in the Nba belongs to the New York Sterns, opps, Toronto Raptors.

New Orleans should petition to get "Jazz" back, tbh.

Utah has offered, in the past, to sell the rights to the name back to New Orleans. They've never been willing to spend the money.

I wonder if Charlotte really was the one that pushed to get "Hornets" back. They've wanted it for a long time. Charlotte actually has a long history with the name "Hornets". During the revolutionary war, British General Cornwallis was having trouble controlling the city and, in 1780, complained that the city was a "veritable hornet's nest of rebellion." The name stuck, and Charlotte has long held the proud nickname of "The Hornet's Nest". I've actually been very annoyed with New Orleans for holding onto the name as long as they have. Thats proud history for North Carolina, and I hate to to take it from them - especially to such a disreputable location as NOLA.

Come on you old bastard, are you serious? If Charlotte renames themselves the Hornets and readapts the original colors (without the royal fascist yellow) and you change your colors to a wicked crazy and stupid gold, red, and blue: you are completely off the hook old man. However, if Charlotte is forced to keep their oompa loompa orange and frostbite blue coloration, as sure as I sit here on my honor as a gentleman, I will find you and bring you to hell with me. If your colors go the San Jose Sharks leeway and your insignia resembles the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, then I will be a monkey's uncle if I don't starve you for a week and smoke an armadilla by ya then run you over with a steamroller somewhere near Buttfuck, Texas. :hang I can hardly wait.

As velik_m said, once people will get used to it over the years, nobody will have an issue about it. Pelican sounds like a fine name with strong local roots.

And nobody will call them the Pelicans. One way or another, people will shorten it. There isn't a single NBA team with a name that is 3 or more syllables long that hasn't been shorten (knickerbockers -> knicks, seventy-sixers -> sixers, cavaliers -> cavs, mavericks -> mavs, timberwolves -> wolves, trailblazers -> blazers). Does "pels" sound fine?

I lived through a time where the NFL had two new expansion teams that ended up deciding on very similar logos for related names and both color sets included teal. I also lived through a time where an expansion hockey team named themselves after a Disney movie (and also included teal). The minor league baseball team in Albuquerque named themselves based on an episode of The Simpsons.

This really isn't that bad, especially if it allows Charlotte to kill off the Bobcats name once and for all.

Cool that Charlotte could go back to being the Hornets, although even that seems like an odd move....would have to revamp their court, jerseys, etc....and all the fans would suddenly have a bunch of meaningless gear (lol as if people buy Bobcats stuff).

Exactly Bruno. This is the very first thing I said when I saw the news flash on ESPN. "But.. It's three syllables and there is no good short version!"

The only other team in the NBA with a three syllable unshortenable name is the Warriors. So people just say "Waryors" which works as two syllables.

In MLB there's none like this. In NFL there's none like this.

I mean, are we going to call them the Pels I guess? Ps sounds like pees. Cans sounds like someone's ass.

Completely lame. Stern should intervene here and make the Jazz give up their name for the good of basketball, or else impose significant sanctions.

Still think they should have gone with gators. Just iconic locally, much tougher sounding of course. I know that UF would seem to have that name cornered but it's not like there aren't colleges (and hundreds of public schools) with names like the Hawks, Bobcats, Warriors, Rockets, or Wolves. Was there a legal reason that couldn't be done?

As described, I have to concur, that would be a very cool name and logo. However, given the fact that we're not even a decade removed from Hurricane Katrina, perhaps the deadliest and costliest natural disaster in U.S. history, and one which not only caused damage to a significant part of the city of New Orleans, but also caused roughly half of its residents to be displaced, I'd have to believe that particular team name wouldn't fly - and probably never would.

I really liked the old name New Orleans Jazz. I wished somehow they could've kept that one or given some consideration into buying it back. It damn sure doesn't make any sense for a team in the Rocky Mountains.

New team names suck these days. Its either pick an animal that is really stupid or overused, pick an inanimate object or idea, or come up with something that makes absolutely no damn sense what so ever. Pelicans is not that bad. It has nothing to do with heat or weather. It is not some term or phrase meant to sound "cool" which will be completely dated in a few years. It is not completely overused animal that is popular in college, high-school, junior high and elementary sports....Bobcats anyone?

I can think of a lot worse.

Slutter McGee

EDIT: oh yeah, and finally it is not based of the popularity of a movie in the 90's based on dinosaurs.

That is because most of all the good names are already taken.

Is it possible that Pelicans have large talons?

Therebye rendering spurs as a less awesome offensive weapon?

Pelicans have webbed feet for swimming. They don't catch prey(fish) with their feet so they don't have large talons.

They should change their name to the Mudbugs, a local nickname for Crawdads.

Is Arena football really a pro sport? its a niche of football that really isn't each 1/7 as popular as any of the four major American sports leagues.

But I like Arena Football. LOL I don't care if its pro or not. I love it. A friend of mine played in Austin years ago. Good times. Don't rain on my parade. :depressed

No worst than Lakers, Clippers, UTAH Jazz, Magic, Texans, Mighty Ducks, Trolly Dodgers, Kinckerbockers, Athletics, and of course the worst the REDSKINS

Look up the history of the Washington Redskins and you'll understand.

Not a bad mock up tbh.

Is that a mockup or the official? If it's real I could get behind that. Bold, distinct color scheme. Managed to make the bird look tough. Could be shortened to "Pels" in casual conversation.

Better than Hornets for sure.

Yeah the first time I heard Texans I :lol. The Magic I understand because of the "Magic Kingdom" that is Disney World.

U understand magic but don't understand team in Texas being called Texans?
Either way they both aren't good names. I still sayvthe Oilers would have been better

When I got the image, it was labeled 'leaked official'... plus it meets the color scheme of the owner's wife so it very well could be what they use.

I'm somewhat jealous that other teams can do so much with their logos but we simply refuse not to. (although I'm not jealous of other team's success compared to ours.. We legit! Lol)

My bad, I just can't call something football when they score 50 points a game and you have to watch it on ESPN8-The OCHO.

Pelicans sounds pretty stupid at first, but it's already growing on me. That logo is nice.

Good point. I love the Spurs, but it's not exactly the coolest team name either.

How is that a "bold, distinct color scheme"? Isn't it the same as the Cavs?

Every team name sounds stupid at first when your not used to it. I direct you to urban dictionary for the "laker" entries

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=laker

1. laker 48 up, 37 down

A small fart, also known as silent but deadly
"Julian, I just layed a laker!"
"Lakers are sweet, Asian, let me try"

2. laker

a straight person pretending to be lesbian; hence "lesbian faker"
Did you see her lookin at Culby? What a laker.

3. laker

a wealthy person who does not live at the lake but owns a cottage and/or boat there. most travel a minimum of an hour to inconveniently make the lake busy as hell. lakers make the gas prices go up and increase the summer population by 200%.

I heard that it was what the wife of the owner wants, which has nothing to do with being either bold or distinct.

Hmm yeah it is the same as the Cavs. I just never realized it because I don't watch Cavs games. In fact just thinking about it in reference to the Cavs is making me like the logo less...

I like the logo, and it makes sense when you know that it is the state bird of Louisiana and is on the flag.
