I dunno
Sense of achievement perhaps
Cuz it looks so complicated to do
But srsly, Im not sure if its necessary
I know it is for phones who dont officially get OS updates
My HTC phones will get JB in January, but I see all those cool JB ROMS in XDA and I want to try one of them
At the same time, Im not sure its worth the hassle, since one of the reason I diteched IOS for Android is the customization out of the box

Titanium backup alone is worth rooting for. Not to mention bluetooth PS3 controller connection. Rooting is freaking awesome, there's no reason NOT to root your phone. Bricking is not a risk these days with any reputable build.

Rooting is extremely easy these days. For a lot of phones, they have a computer app, where you simply plug your phone into your computer, and run the command prompt on your computer and select what you want (root, flash a recovery, flash a rom, etc...) and it automatically does it for you. Super easy.
To brick your phone, you pretty much have to go wayyyyy out of your way to do so. If you make a small mistake in the normal process of rooting or flashing something, its almost certainly not going to brick your phone, you just have to do it over again.
Getting Cyanogenmod or MIUI is worth rooting. Both are infinitely faster/better/more customizable than the stock rom. You will not be disappointed after you flash one of those roms. Cyanogenmod is pretty much android in its purest form, while MIUI basically combines the better elements of both iOS and Android into one package. Cyanogenmod is generally a bit more stable though, but MIUI is a very pretty looking and intuitive rom with IMO the best music app available. I know you (lefty) liked iOS for quite a while, so you may enjoy MIUI.

Which rom did you flash? and what kind of phone do you have?
Phone:
HTC One S
(S4 snapdragon)
ROM:
AOKP ville Milestone 6
METHOD:
I didnt feel like doing a "manual" install, so I installed Goomanager 1st (from Play Store). and then browsed through a list of ROMS compatible with my device, then installed the rom zip file
Then I found a tutorial for HTC phones that said to install via recovery mode
And I believe there was a CM10 rom in there, silly me
Other problems :
- Music player mixing songs
- Camera app displaying shitty colors all over
- No wifi (as I already mentioned)
- Displays 3G signal instead of 4G
Should I have, in recovery mode, cleaned the cache before/after flashing to avoid those issues?
Edit : stupid me, I just realized GooManager could have flashed everything for me - while doing wiping+cleaning the cache
Tomorrow Im gonna Titanium backup, then flash CM10 (stable) via GooManager

Not sure, but you still might need to flash the radios. Those come directly from your phone manufacturer and allow it to operate on the most updated communications protocols. They should post them in any thread you're rooting from. cntl+F for radio.

Cry Havoc, I really don't think that it is so complicated.
I think that you are before you do all of that, just to be sure, redownload and reflash. Do you have titanium backup? I ask because I want you to wipe cache, davlik cache, data, and system. Doing so will wipe all the apps that you have so I want you to have backed them up. You can do this with Titanium backup even the free version (though it is annoying to restore them with the free version because you have to "accept" every single app (Do you want to restore this app? [Yes], (restoring.....); Do you want to restore this app? [Yes], (restoring .. ..))

I realized I didnt flash the boot img (step 5)
But again, Ive read in various forums that this step is kinda pointless if you use TWRP`is that true ??
Oh and when I say the radio file wouldnt flash, it's just that the progress stays grey for a while (it should be filling with blue), as if waiting to start the process (like 5 minutes before I decide to say fuck it, and Ive attempted to flash many times)
Drachen, Ive backed up everything through both Titanium and Goomanager, just to be sure
And yes, I do wipe cache and Devlik, etc etc before flashing
However I havent tried redownloading before reflashing - I should probably try that

Ok great, I didn't want to tell you to wipe system or data (factory reset) without you having backed everything up. As far as flashing the boot image, it sounds like you are rooted, but not s-off. If this is the case (and it has been a while since I was rooted/s-on), I think the only custom recovery which will allow you to just flash (without separately flashing boot img) is 4ext. Now, TWRP may have added that functionality in the last 6 months or so, but that would be something to check with the forums for your specific device.

Yes you are still S-ON. I don't know if there is an exploit to achieve S-Off (check xda). It's not a huge deal without S-off, there are workarounds, it is just nice to have S-off.

I just saw yearerday that TWRP had HTC Dumlock; I installed it but Im still trying to figure how to use it
In a nutshell, it allows to flash ROMs that couldnt be flashed directly or that need an imgboot (maybe thats why I couldnt get CM 10 to work) and Radios
I found explanations on HTC DUmlock, but still too technical for me; geeks understand each other, but I dont know what the fuck they are talking about :lol
I was so fed up yesterday that I attempted to flash the RUU for my phone/carrier (after relocking the bootlader), but it didnt work; I tried different methods (running the RUU, then extracting 2 files from the RUU to put them in another folder and then enter a cmd in that folder)

No problem, it happens. Just so you know, though, you shouldn't even need your laptop for this. You can DL the apk directly to your phone, install it on your phone, and assumedly you have the ROM already on your SD card (from when you installed it earlier). Ok, that makes more sense, they are supposed to be upgrading the 3g backhaul at the same time as they are installing LTE on the towers. Nationwide, they have 3 different contractors doing the work (if I remember correctly: Samsung, Lucent, Ericksson). The region that includes Texas is being upgraded by Ericksson and they realized that they don't have enough parts to upgrade 3g, so they are just doing the LTE work, then will come back later and upgrade 3g. Everywhere else is getting that sweet 1.5 Mbps 3g.

Updaaaaaaaaate, motherfuckers !!!!!!!!!!
Turns out my major issues - no Wifi, recent JB roms not booting up after flashing them (stuck at HTC welcome screen) were caused by the fact that my phoneis S-ON with HBOOT 1.13 or higher
Which means that I have to flash a ROM boot.img (the rom kernel) via my PC
I just found that out today (but hey Im a noob and HTC phones are harder to hack than other brands)
So I found a tutorial to do that step, but you have to download a file, enter commands to install it properly, then plug phone to PC, enter other commands.... I didnt feel loke doing all that shit TBH
But I accidentally found a thread about an Play Store app that does that for the user :D (Flash Image GUI)
All you have to do is select the ROM you want to flash, it will locate the kernel and flash it
Then go in Recovery, flash the ROM and gapps, and voila !
Not only the most recent ROMS will boot up, but I got my WIFI back too !

Apple stopped innovating a long time ago. They're coasting now, and losing ground every month to Android.

I have run PA on my Evo3D. It's good enough, but I feel like the screen is a little small for its specific features. I am on an unofficial CM right now (since the 3d is a bastard stepchild and no one wants to dev for it). It works good enough, but my battery is getting worse and worse. I unplug at 6:30 and get my 14% warning at about 9:15. Of course the battery is 2 years old.

Yeah, the tablet mode features just make me squint, no thanks.
I would be on a Nexus 4 if they were ever in stock, but the whole thing has put me off. I almost feel that the phone was more of a marketing gimmick - no way they couldn't have known a phone at that price wouldn't be in high demand.

They have never had huge demand for a nexus.
Heck, the 32GB galaxy nexus has been 350 for many months and it wasn't moving very fast.

The other Nexuses weren't offered the same way this one, though. I think the Galaxy Nexus was available for $300 on contract and $700 unlocked (not initally available in play store). It wasn't until this summer they slashed the price to $350 unlocked, 8 months after the phone was out.
In the Nexus 4 you had a brand new phone on the newest Android (OS that has continued to grow) being offered for $300/$350 unlocked. Heck if you're not from T-mobile you're definately are gonna pick the unlocked ones up, so I'm not sure how they could underestimate demand by so much. Mind you, I can't imagine selling a phone like this at that price yields much of a profit margin - which would make sense why supply has been the way it has been.

I understand that it isn't exactly the same, but that price drop was only 6 months after release and it wasn't flying. I am not saying that they should have anticipated the same kind of sales as the Gnex, but that they could have drawn some conclusions from it. Add to that all of the whining about 8GB, 16GB, and HSPA+ and it is easy to see how demand could be much higher than expectations.

While I agree there was talk about the LTE and space issues, I think there was much more talk/hype about the attractive price point, tbh.
But I mean seriously, the phone has been available for a total of like 20 freaking minutes on the Play Store since it was released. I'm not even sure if the stock can be compared to what they had in the past with other GNexes (well until they (IF they) release sales figures).

In many ways, this touches directly on the fragmentation issue that's becoming more and more prevalent with each passing Android release. The longer the platform lives, the more people are being left behind on older builds. Without trying to read too closely betwixt the lines, it sure sounds as if Google's top priority is to get Android to as many people as possible, while letting the details -- things like percentage of Android users able to update to its latest version -- fall as they may. It's obviously a very different tactic from that taken in Cupertino, but then again, thinking differently sure hasn't hurt either of the two.
Google basically doesn't give a shit about everyone getting updates. Good thing the dev community is so strong.

If you know where to browse on your phone (e.g xda-developers), it can be done on your phone.
Do you have a recovery installed (TWRP/CWM)? Needed to flash a ROM --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1773659
It really depends on what you want in a ROM, I'd personally just start off with CyanogenMod 10 --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1803822
Wiping is required for installing a new ROM and clears all user data. If you wanna preserve it, I'd download Titanium Backup to save your data. And make sure you use the recovery to backup an image of your current ROM and data in case you just wanna revert back.

You wiped the phone before installing CM10 I assume? I know I get those errors when I either 1) didn't wipe dataor; 2) installed gapps when it was not necessary/wrong gapps.

yes, I did the wipe before installing CM10. I installed it like it said on the instructions.
Install ClockworkMod Recovery (http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager) for "skyrocket" or "hercules" whichever matches your device. Sorry, CM and TeamChopsticks cannot provide support for other recoveries, although they may work fine.
Download the recommended radio version matching your device. (See the list below)
Download the latest nightly or stable build from http://get.cm (http://get.cm/) (choose Skyrocket or Hercules whichever matches your device)
Download the recommended Google Apps. (See the list below)
Reboot into recovery.
Wipe data/factory reset.
Format /system (mounts and storage->format /system).
Install the zip files in this order: radio zip, then CM10 zip, and finally install the gapps zip
Reboot. Let it sit for a few minutes after the first boot. Be patient.
I don't remember if I got the errors before or after I restored the apps. I would say after because I knew I had to do that. I did the full backup in TB Pro and restored it the same way. Question, being that i'm going to another version of android, will that cause the conflict? I flashed CM10 again last night and didn't do the all-in-one restore. I tried it individually but Contacts wouldn't transfer. Oh, and I don't backup anything in Google.
