Last year their December schedule was 2-14 Indy, 5-11 Washington, 8-8 Denver, 6-10 Dolphins, 6-10 Bills. The year before it was more impressive, but the year before was before their defense got so bad.

This year New England is 2-2 vs. teams above .500 and 7-1 vs. teams below .500 while they've had a lot of moments where they've looked a lot shittier than the 2011 or 2010 team. It's stupid to predict what's gonna happen in this game based off New England being able to pound a bunch of weak teams.

As far as in the future goes, they really do need to recruit more speed. If you watch NCAA football you've had to have heard about why the SEC rules, I know you've heard..."it's that SEC speed, the big guys can even run"....haven't you? In the college game overall team speed is huge as is depth of it. Look at Oregon, speed all over the place. ND doesn't get those kinds of players, they end up at other schools. As long as ND doesn't get those kinds of players they will never be among the elite, in the title hunt, beating the SEC/Pac12 studs in a bowl game.

I have no reason to be critical of ND, no ax to grind I just follow the sport and see what kind of athlete ends up in South Bend, They are a wrung below what we see at Bama, USC, Oklahoma, FSU. I don't see that changing any time soon.

If I'm betting I completely disregard intangible unproven stuff like "DOn't bet against Brady/Bellichick in a big game" or Houston has nevre been in a big game

I took the +4 for Houston (shoulda waited, it's 5.5 now) bc I expect a close game.

Houston statistically checks out as the better team. Both teams have had easy schedules. I love their balanced ball control offense that can keep Brady off the field. even with injuries, their defense is still one of the better ones New Englands played all year. NE's offense hasn't looked immortal against some of the best defenses they played. I see Andre Johnson as a mismatch for the Pats' secondary. Houston is +.4 yards per play, New England is even due to its shoddy defense.

At the same time.... Brady is excellent against the blitz, which means the normally blitz heavy Texans have to adjust their gameplan. It is the best offense in the NFL by far, and with the injuries Welker can be a problem. JJ Watt is excellent, but the Texans' don't have any other pass rushers. If Pats' devise a scheme to contain Watt, it could be BRady shredding the Pats.

But since I expect a close game, I'll take 4 points with the Texans, who I believe are better than the Patriots.
