Friend killer is an example of why this award sucks. He's averaging the 3rd most MPG on his team and is 2nd on his team in total minutes. There's really no question he's the best (and only real) SG on his team, and isn't by any stretch of the imagination a 6th man.

Agreed with DOK..JR Smith is averaging 33 MPG..he's still considered a 6th man and is probably the favorite to win it, but he doesn't qualify for me..Kevin Martin and Jamal Crawford are averaging 30 MPG as well..The voters won't take the minutes into consideration..

I couldn't disagree more, 6th man isn't defined by how many minutes you play. In the old days, you were the 6th man because you weren't good enough to crack the starting lineup, but good enough to be the first option off the bench. Basketball and it's entirety has progressed and evolved and so has the role of a 6th man.

In today's NBA the 6th man is there to provide an offensive spark and to lead the flow of the offense - while the starters are resting. The Spurs have been doing that for a long time with Ginobili, now the rest of the league has picked up on it. JR Smith is a starter caliber player, but because of how the Knicks are built, with tons of offensive weapons in their starting line up they don't need another offensive minded player and instead prefer a defensive specialist to defend the opponents top talent. Shumpert is that guy.

6th man isn't about how good you are as a player anymore. Wade can be a 6th man with the Heat. Harden won 6th man last year and he's shown to be a true star with the Rockets. It's about the rotation and how well the player that comes off the bench keeps the flow going. It's harder to do that with players that aren't as talented as the average starter is.
