You have to guarantee a certain number of plates will be made or pony up $15k for the tooling upfront.

I mean really, you think more people will purchase the Quarter Horse one than would a SPURS one?

Not necessarily true. There certainly aren't 15,000 Congressional Medal of Honor winners, or Pearl Harbor survivors, but the CMH and PH plates are available for those who are eligible.

I think the state of Arizona should make a "We got OWN3D by the Spurs" plate! I'd get one of those for each of my cars! :lol

I knew I read this somewhere...

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/062805dnmetlicenseplates.50886fe1.html

Specialty plates, which tout and support things like universities, organizations and veterans with special logos directly on them, have taken off. In May, more than 356,000 of almost 19 million Texas vehicles had some type of specialty license tag, up from 342,000 a year earlier.

Statewide in May, 16,647 cars and trucks sported collegiate plates. They and most other plates require an annual fee of $30, generally with $8 going to defray production costs and $22 going toward programs associated with the plate's theme.

Faced with $15,000 in production costs for every new plate issued, the Legislature passed a law several years ago that established criteria for eliminating many low-performing plates. And though stricter criteria went into effect in September, the state is now beginning to look at the plates issue.

According to the state transportation code, specialty plates should be allowed only if:

•3,500 sets of plates have been issued during the plate's life span;

•the Transportation Department has made $15,000 from the issuance of the license plates;

•a university or other sponsoring group deposits $15,000 to start a new plate, keep existing plates available or restart a plate in the future. That money would be returned once the minimum number of plates, including annual renewals, had been issued.

Those are of course exceptions. PH - don't you mean purple heart? I don't imagine that there are many Pearl survivors around anymore.

You don't think 3500 people in the entire state of Texas would get Spurs plates if they were available? There'd be at least 2 sets in my household. :)

Anyway....I sent him a very pleasant email. :)

SWC Bonfire

Those are mainly for Texas schools. If the Spurs foundation ponies up $15k they can have one. It says that $8 goes to defray the cost of the plate and something like $22 goes to the charity.

SpursWoman

So if they were available, and TPark got them for his truck, the next time they are tied in a playoff series would he trade his truck in?

:wtf

No, he'd just have to keep a spare set of normal plates for his bandwagon.

Nope, Pearl Harbor, which is exactly my point. Not too many around.

Someone will need to email the Spurs about this; someone's got to pony up the $15k to start the run of the plates. :)

I mean, really.

Come on.

I've just ponied up the cash to get Knights of Columbus plates for my new truck.

Now you've got to make me choose between two great religions.

The Catholic church and the Spurs.

Damn.

bump....

Finally spoke to Bruce Guthrie tonight and he gave me the lowdown on Spurs plates. He says that they have received a lot of letters from fans wanting to know why the Spurs don't have plates with TxDot and if there are any plans to get some. A lot of people, including myself, have been under the impression that the profits could go to the Spurs Foundation. Not the case. TxDot makes it sound that way, but they have some very strict rules and the profits have to go towards very specific things.

Also, would you believe that the Cowboys have yet to break even on their $15,000 initial investment for their plates?! I think it has a lot to do with the lack of marketing and Bruce agreed with me. They are interested in doing the plates, but it would take marketing and manpower and there are other projects that have priority. It is on their radar though, so who knows.

With a payroll of $60M, can't the Spurs team pony up $15K?
They each blow that on their home theatres alone.

I bet serveral of them burn through many times $15K every fucking week just in living expenses.

If there are not enough workers to make them let me know I'll send Shaq to arrest some thugz.

Thx Timmy D.

always? when else?

"other people's money."

"their" money comes from whose pockets and ticket/merchandise/TV purchases?

$15K for the Spurs organizaton as a marketing expense is not findable?

Taco- I sent the state an e-mail about this same thing a few months back.
pparently the spurs org. has to request it and pony up about 15k to start.
But they make thier $$ back after 700 plates are sold.
So I guess hte nbext step would be e-mailing Hol/Spurs exec's..... i mean there are MORE than 700 people just in SA who'd want that plate......

See below - I just explained that there is a lot more to it and that they are already aware that the fans would like to see plates made.

And before everyone starts calling the Spurs cheap, there is an exciting promotion coming up that involves a pretty amazing and expensive grand prize.

The good news is that he made reference to a letter he got just the other day from a fan asking about the plates and he said he's gotten more letters in the past. Everyone should keep writing the marketing department. While it won't necessarily get the ball rolling right away, it will definitely keep the topic fresh in their minds.

I bought my Spurs plate frame at Texas Team Sports on Bitters. You should be able to get a Manu jersey at Academy or the SBC Center. I'm sure you can find both items online.
