Now if you want climate diversity and plenty of good agricultural land, then Oregon. We have several rivers to irrigate with, and few top the Columbia River.

Ok man if you want an education Cali has over 200 colleges. What does Oregon have? And don't ever try to compare dairy/farming between Oregon and Cali. Not even close. We also have how many pro sports teams, how's that Oregon NFL team doing, oh yeah...YOU DON'T HAVE ONE!!!!!!!!!
Portland compares to LA,SF and SD? Ever been to San Diego, the place is amazing. I hitch hiked thru Oregon back in my Navy days was coming from Seattle to Cali, it was illegal to hitch hike what kind of shit is that? Having our dress blues on saved our ass.
Wanna make a movie we have Hollywood, what does Oregon have? Young guys looking for women, no place has more great looking women than California.
Hell. I can't think of any music coming out of Oregon, as we know that's not the case here in...THE GOLDEN STATE.

How many hormones do those "California happy cows" get? Alpenrose, Dairygold and Tillamook products are hormone free.
How many cheese makers in California have as many awards and Tillamook cheese products?
I forget if it's Portland, or the Portland metro area, but we have more breweries (per capita?) than any other city in the world. Most of them microbreweries with unique beers of their own.
We have a huge wheat industry in the eastern state, wide variety of fruits, and the Willamette Valley is filled with other great agriculture.
Yes, I've been to San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Oakland, and several other places in California. What I cannot get out of my mind is how downtown SF smells like urine when it rains.
California cannot support itself without the water imported from the Colorado river, or Electricity from Oregon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Intertie). Did you know that Oregon supplies Los Angeles with half of its peak electrical usage?
California would be fucked if it were the only state left.

So there we are shining our shoes while sitting down beside the barracks (San Diego) wall. Right across from us...The Grinder...a large cement area (about two football fields) where we did all that stupid marching around going nowhere.
Anyway...
We felt a rumble. yep...earthquake. Not much we could do but stay against the wall. The Grinder looked like it was made out of rubber, it had waves as it rolled. Cement rolling! Strange to see this. Lasted about 30 seconds then, cool.

Totally disagree.
Obviously changes would have to be made. But I'd rather make those changes in a huge state with all we have vs a state the size of Oregon and what it has. People would get bored to death in Oregon, not so here in Cali.
I noticed you ignored the education/entertainment differences. Far more things to do in Cali, far more school choices.

Who disagreed with me over that NE vs SF play? Outclassed by who?
Talk to any coach at any level and they will all tell you it's starts with a solid running game. Do you listen to any of the talk shows/announcers during the game, obviously you don't. Don't be a fool Greg, we came within a couple plays of seeing a Ravens vs Niners SB last year and you know it. Two teams that run the ball.
Pay attention...
You run you are in third and short, you are running the clock keeping their O on the bench while giving your D some rest.
Tell any football coach.."forget the running game"...hahahaha!!!!!! You'd be laughed at Greg.
The Niners are considered by many to be the best team in the league right now, are they a passing team? You really haven't heard.."The Pats are better than ever, they now have a running game"....really?

Tell the Vikings they don't need a running game. So you think one season tells us anything, say it isn't so Greg, you really don't know any better than that? What if the Niners win it this season, you do know they beat the Giants last year and came within a couple fumbles from keeping them out of the SB. Ravens make a FG and there are no Pats in the biggie.
Come on Greg bone up on how things really work as of right now it's very obvious to me you haven't a clue. You can't run the ball in the NFL you will need an Aaron Rogers,/Tom Brady to bail you out how many of those are around?

not a lot but it's not a surprise the last 10 teams to make the SB have gotten there largely due to their QB.

I'm talking about that Viking team that without a running game there is no talk of the playoffs.
Big Ben had a great defense as has Eli, you disagree? Drew Brees didn't have a running game?
How many times have we heard/read about the Packers and Pats realizing they need to get a running game, well? Do you watch the NFL? If you do how can you ignore what we all hear in every single game? Which is....they need to establish that running game. Come on Greg don't act like you don't hear that, ok?

I'm not saying Portland has more. That would be wrong. From a practical point, California is not a self sufficient state. Nearly all their energy, they bring in from other states. They have a really fucked up financial situation as well. The only thing Oregon lacks that I can think of is fuel for cars, trucks, oil furnaces, etc. We have a huge underground natural gas pipe, but I don't know if it is an Oregon source, or elsewhere. I think it comes from a tap in the side of the mountain. Three powerful hydroelectric dams for electricity, nearly all of which currently gets sent to Los Angeles. We have several smaller hydroelectric dams as well.
What good are the additional universities and entertainment if most the population has no electricity or transportation?

Portland is a cool town and the state is beautiful, but it's filled with the dumbest, beardiest, flanneliest, meth-mouthed, trailer-dwelling, canned-beer drinking, log-truck driving, hillbilly rednecks west of the Mississippi.
The people there, as you and TLongII both reinforce on a daily basis, have the biggest inferiority complex to californians I've ever seen. You also get butthurt incredibly easily when somebody actually tells the truth about your state.
It has its redeeming qualities, don't get me wrong, but to even talk about Oregon in the same breath as Cali is laughable. Just accept that your state basically copies everything california does (wine, craft beer etc) and doesn't do as good of a job at itPERIOD.

The thing that always amuses me the most about this argument is that California is the third largest state in the country and is incredibly diverse in terms of its geography, population density, and culture. It's a massive state, which not even I fully realized/appreciated until I moved away a couple years ago. In the time it would take me to drive from San Diego to Humboldt County, going just along the coast, I could go on a road trip here that would take me through nine or ten states. And in that drive you'd hit everything from arid desert, to rough mountains, to coastal redwoods; from congested urban cities to empty rural farmland. So whatever complaint (or praise, for that matter) a person may have about a particular city or region in California, it doesn't apply to the whole state. While a number of the stereotypes may be true of a particular city or region, you can drive two hours in any direction and I guarantee those stereotypes will no longer be true.
It's something I'd expect more Texans to understand, frankly, considering how drastically that state also changes from border to border.

Yes, we have been "Californicated." That is a term used here long before the series ever aired. Inferiority complex? No. Yes, we have a large drug using homeless population which, thanks to the liberal city council, enables.
Butthurt over what others say? Well, I guess that's a matter of perspective. This state definitely has it's share of flaws. I will never deny that. What state doesn't? If you are going to say that California doesn't have even more flaws, then I say you are in denial.
This is still a very good state, overall. 30 years ago, before we were californicated, it was a far better state than today.
Seriously though, under the pretense of the OP, where would California get it's electrical needs for it's population?

Admittedly that might have been a poor word choice on my part for the point I was trying to make, but I can't necessarily think of a better way to put it. Was mostly thinking in terms of the fact that the stereotypical San Franciscan or Los Angelino isn't found throughout the entire state. Pretty much. I would literally drive down to Dallas from Lawton, Ok so I could take I-20 back to see my Dad in Bama instead of taking the shorter I-40 route. This after getting stuck in Arky, in my car, for 27 (usually takes about 12 from OK to AL) straight hours because they were too stupid to salt/sand the interstate during the 04' ice storm. I literally fell asleep in my car (no hotels or shelters were open/had room) with it in park on the interstate and woke up to a state trooper tapping on my window with a flashlight. There were national guard driving up and down the median passing out MRE's to people who were hungry. The storm had been hyped for a week beforehand and they were still unprepared. When I finally got to Memphis there was literally no snow/ice on the roads and it was clear sailing the rest of the way.

Ok forget the fantasy.
Now give me one good reason to leave Cali for Oregon.
I can give you several, but please don't! Therefore I will not give you reasons.
Now I have been looking at energy for California. It looks like California can generate more of it's power than I thought. It looks like it is self sufficient in about 20% of its electrical needs, where Oregon has probably has about 2,000% capacity. That leaves 1,900% of our current capacity to filter to electric car needs. Does California have enough oil production to keep cars running? Much the California natural gas production is used for that electrical generation. What isn't used for electricity, is probably for home water heaters, heating, etc. Since electricity is so cheap in Oregon, most homes are heated with electricity.
If you think I'm joking about us supplying Los Angelas with 50% of it's peak electrical needs, read here:
wiki: Pacific DC Intertie (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_DC_Intertie)
The Pacific DC Intertie (also called Path 65) is an electric power transmission line that transmits electricity from the Pacific Northwest to the Los Angeles area using high voltage direct current (HVDC). The line capacity is 3,100 megawatts, which is enough to serve two to three million Los Angeles households and is 48.7% of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) electrical system's peak capacity.
That line is only to Los Angeles (Sylmar). The pacific Northwest as a whole, sends about 20 gigawatts to California. The sending station from The Dalles Oregon (Celilo) is just less than a miles away from The Dalles Dam.

I noticed you ignored my question, talk to me about Delano. How about Lindsay? Exeter? Visalia? Tulare? Lemoore? Go ahead elaborate.

They're shitty. The good places in California are not those places. Even you pimp San Diego and San Francisco over these shitty places.

There are many great places in Claifornia.
The central valley of California is a shitty part of California.
Visalia is in the central valley of California.
Therefore Visalia is in a shitty part of California and, by definition, shitty.
By your own admission, the best thing about the shitty part of the state is that it is not too long a drive to much better parts of the state -- those parts you use to actually make a case for California's being a good state.

Flat, ugly, conservative, horrible air quality, not a damn thing to do other than go to the mall or, if you're really thirsty for culture, a scintillating production by the Townsend Opera Players, the weather sucks, Highway 99 sucks, and, again, on and on.
I'm more curious to know what qualities, specifically, you think make Modesto or Ceres or any other little nothing town in the Central Valley so wonderful. You've yet to put forth a terribly strong argument in the affirmative.

A lot of jobs to begin with, a lot of people doing well for themselves. You can actually go to a liquor store at 1am and not be afraid. You can be out in the county in 30 minutes no matter which Hwy 99 town you're in.

A lot of jobs to begin with,
Jobs doing what? There's no industry in the Central Valley. There's agriculture and wine, but that mostly results in a few wealthy families and an army of underpaid illegals.
a lot of people doing well for themselves.
Stockton, and the surrounding Central Valley, was pretty much the epicenter for the recent housing crisis, still hasn't recovered, and the economy in the area is in general still depressed. However many people there are doing well in the Central Valley, there are FAR more who are struggling and living in horrible conditions. I worked in real estate for the ten years I lived in Stockton, have a number of family members who still do, have owned investment and rental properties in the area, know several people who still do own property in the area, and I know full well that the market is still in the tank.
You can actually go to a liquor store at 1am and not be afraid.
You likely can't find a liquor store that's even open at 1:00am. Because nothing is. Except shitty strip mall bars. If you do find one that's open, you're likely ducking meth heads. And the crime stats in a number of those Central Valley cities are pretty atrocious.
You can be out in the county in 30 minutes no matter which Hwy 99 town you're in.
That's back to liking the Central Valley because of how quickly you can get away from it. And if it's Stanislaus, San Joaquin, or one of the other Central Valley counties, going there really isn't anything special.
I've ran those SF, North Hollywood, Oakland, San Diego streets at night, lotta freaks.
Well, sure. But there's also life. The freaks exist every bit as much late at night in the Central Valley, but they're wandering streets that are completely empty amongst businesses that are all closed. Which I find a tad more disconcerting.
Love Hwy99, especially going over the Grapevine.
Highway 99 doesn't go over the Grapevine. And the Grapevine isn't in the Central Valley.

Also the conceit of the OP is that California would survive a great cataclysm that would destroy everything else is pretty funny. The opposite seems much more likely.

The only liquor stores I know of in Central Valley towns that are open at 1:00am are filled with way too many scary people for me to venture inside.
Who said the grapevine was in the valley? While in name Hwy 99 runs right up to the grapevine you are still on the same Hwy you were traveling.
You mentioned it while listing positive attributes about central California, so either your point was irrelevant or your geography was off. Based on your assertion that Highway 99 went through the Grapevine, I assumed the latter. I apologize, however, if I should have assumed the former.
No the freaks don't run amock here like they do in those places I mentioned, totally wrong!!! Never been to Oakland after dark have you? How about Hayward? Ever been to Compton?
Yes to all three. The only way you can declare that Oakland, Hayward, or Compton to have more "freaks" than the Central Valley is if your definition of "freak" is based on skin color.
Which, given your posting history, it very well may be.
The central valley is nothing like the picture you are trying to paint, tons of farming which is always great.
Farming is hugely important, yes. But it's not enough to make the region great for everyone. In fact, it is largely due to the agriculture industry paying migrant workers next to nothing that there is such rampant poverty throughout the Central Valley.
