My favorite has been The Patient, unfortunately when Mookie and I went to TOOL in S.A. back on November 12, 2002, they never played it....

I have been listening to TOOL alot more recently and i have to say THIRD EYE is by far their best song.

Just listening to live versions blows my mind away.

What do you all think?

Lateralis is my favorite bc the song structure is put together so well. I wouldn't add anything or take anything away from it. Damn, I miss Tool.

APC is the shit I love them. You do realize Maynard only writes the lyrics right?

Adam Jones and Danny Carey write the music for tool...imo they're bigger genius' than maynard (although in some tool songs the lyrics are the best part)

Billy Howerdel writes music for APC, and even though maynards vocals are more melodic in APC, I think the heart of Thirteenth Step was the music-music over the vocals

Adam Jones is the fucking bomb. He got a degree in like sculpting or modeling or something like that and did art design work for horror movies like designing a monsters face or something like that (this was back when we did movies with real physical objects not computer animation)

Adam Jones designed the sculpture on the cover of Undertow, which for some reason was evil enough for them to cover up on later editions with a sleeve.

Danny Carey is the occultist....his dad was into Masonic rituals and like father like son I guess.

Thats where all the fucked up music of TOOL comes from. The mind of an occultist and a psycho hahaha

From the "Muhammed My Friend" live perfermance with Tori and Maynard. It is awesome. I have a copy but the sound quality stinks.

Tool is one of my 3 all time favorite bands.

Top song is tough to pick. If I had to pick one, I'd say.......

Pushit

Undertow, Aenima, and Lateralus are the type of albums I listen to for hours, with headphones, laying down and letting my mind relax. With headphones, you can hear all of the different nuances in the music and almost something new everytime.

If anyone is interested, I have tons of bootlegs. I don't mind burning copies.

Jess has a video of that performance (Amos and Maynard). Jess is probably the biggest Toriphile I've ever seen. But, because of that I've been inundated in her music and I've become a large fan myself.

A larger number of people from this forum apparently went to that Magestic show in SA. I know Pakidan, Jess, and Spurschick all went.

I got to see her in Dallas this past March. Well worth the drive up there! She was absoultey incredible and the amount of sound that comes out of that little body is mind boggling. I love her lyrics because they are witty, sarcastic, and all around intelligent.

So yeah, Tori kicks major ass. Probably going to see her again in September in either Austin or Houston.

Ok, now Tool. My favorite is 2 tracks, but really one song. Parabol and Parabola. Other than that, it's probably Eulogy but com'on now, lets be real. Everything they do is fucking amazing. EVERYTHING!

MannyIsGod
06-29-2005, 10:58 PM
Oh, and when I saw Tool in Houston a few years back, they were so disapointing. I do however think that had to do with the show format. They spent way too much time between shows. I was also a pretty good distance from the stage at a shitty venue - Cynthia Woods - so that took away from it.

All that being said, when they played it was killer. Just too much crap like the hanging naked man in between songs.

Front row baby!!! The show was awesome, except for that bitch during the opening act.

Yeah, I'm glad they got her out of there before Tori started playing. I just wish they had miked the piano better - I was somewhere around 10th row, and I could hear the upper octaves really well, but anything below middle C got totally drowned out by the bass and the drums. It was better in Dallas where it was just her.

It's hard for me not to love her - we're both jaded daughters of Methodist ministers.

As for favorite Tool song ... I really do love Lateralus still. If I had to pick a favorite (which is hard enough) that would be it - though I do really love Sober as well. I would say Vacant because the lyrics are incredible, but it's technically not a Tool song, and it's only been done once live - I was lucky enough to have a friend send me the MP3 - it's supposed to be a Tapeworm Project track ... but that never has fruitioned. hmmmm the meaning of Prison Sex..

lets see:
It took so long to remember just what happened.
I was so young and vestal then,
you know it hurt me,
but I'm breathing so I guess I'm still alive
even if signs seem to tell me otherwise.
I've got my hands bound,
my head down, my eyes closed,
and my throat wide open.

Do unto others what has been done to me,
Do unto others what has been done to you

I'm treading water,
I need to sleep a while.
My lamb and martyr, you look so precious.
Won't you come a bit closer,
close enough so I can smell you.
I need you to feel this,
I can't stand to burn too long.
Released in this sodomy.
For one sweet moment I am whole.

Do unto others now what has been done to me
Do unto others now what has been done to you.

You're breathing so I guess you're still alive
even if signs seem to tell me otherwise.
Won't you come just a bit closer,
close enough so I can smell you.
I need you to feel this.
I need this to make me whole.
There's release in this sodomy.
For I am your witness that
blood and flesh can be trusted.
And only this one holy medium brings me piece of mind.

Got your hands bound, your head down,
your eyes closed.
You look so precious now.

( Show me something
Thought I could make it end
Thought I could wash the stains away
Thought I could break the circle if I
Slipped right into your skin
So sweet was your surrender
We have become one
I have become my terror
And you my precious lamb and martyr.)

I have found some kind of temporary sanity in this
shit, blood, and cum on my hands.

I've come round full circle.
My lamb and martyr, this will be over soon.
You look so precious."

Yes, well, Maynard is all about masochism - and so are a lot of the diehard fans. Not in the cutting kind of way necessarily, but in the living with mental anguish kind of way. Most fans don't listen to Tool to find a way out.

Oh I didn't exclude cutting by any means, I know a lot of Tool fans that do - and I know a lot of Tori fans that do for that matter - I used to. But I can still listen to the music in a similar state of mind without the cutting, which is why I used "mental anguish" - it's more all-encompassing. It's all about having an outlet, not necessarily a way out.

I disagree, I think that headphones really allow you to be totally enveloped in the music - and this is coming from someone with good Bose speakers hooked up to my receiver.

06-30-2005, 02:40 PM
Dude theres no way you can tell me listening to Smashing Pumpkins Adore on your high end speakers can let you experience that album better than on a pair of heavy headphones. Theres just no fucking way. You'd have to do some serious twinking to be able to hear all the slight low tracks behind each song, and even then it would ruin the quality overall cuz the main stuff would sound like shit. With heavy headphones its all just right there, its like those big ass expensive speakers are inside of your head and you can hear everything as it was meant to be heard.

The same applies to TOOL cd's

ObiwanGinobili
06-30-2005, 02:40 PM
I have to agree with the headphone thought.
To really get enveloped in an album you have to have a kickass pair of giant old fashioned headphones. It's liek a portal to anther world.
It not only surrounds you in the music but it shuts out all other sounds.

Having a top of the line stereo system and the ability to turn up the volume achieves the same effect.

Go look at the dynamic response ratings for the best pair of headphones you can find, and I'll beat them.

Just because your favorite food is a BigMac, doesn't mean it's the worlds best burger. The same is true with speakers. Obviously, what sounds good to some will sound different to others. Dynamic frequency response ratings are the only truely objective measure.

Yeah, you just continue being an asshole so you can parade around your $12k speakers there, buddy. In the meantime, I still maintain that headphones envelope you in the music more - if for no other reason than proximity to your ears.

And just because I didn't drop $12k on a speaker set does not mean that I don't know what I'm talking about. So take your Big Mac and shove it.

scott
06-30-2005, 05:07 PM
I don't have $12k speakers either - but that doesn't mean they aren't better than headphones.

You can maintain anything you like, but that doesn't have any relevance towards objective statistics.

As for promimity to your ears... I'd put it this way: I think a big screen HDTV looks better from 15 feet away than a $100 13" TV from 3 feet away.

Blue is a totally different song - they recorded something like Vacant on the cover/political album they did after Thirteenth Step - it's called Passive, but it had a different title and sounded really different - a friend played it for me, and I didn't even recognize it immediately.

Come on, what about Ticks and Leeches? That song is FANTASTIC - danny at his best. The only downside is that they cant play it live, because when they recorded it, maynard so destroyed his voice that they agreed never to play it live. My favourite though is Jimmy, without a doubt. I love it. But other than that (and the rest of their catalogue, of course) my favourites are:

Jimmy,
Ticks and Leeches,
Third Eye,
Aenema,
Pushit,
Eulogy,
H,
The Grudge,
and lastly their cover of Led Zepplins, 'No Quarter' - one of the best cover songs EVER.
