Big fuckin' deal. He only did it because he was "scheduled" to. "I'll show them. Right Phoenix Media, this is what I'm supposed to do since they traded me, right?" --- "Yeah, yeah, yeah, we'll wait over here in the deserts and then write a bunch of glowing stories and talk all day on the radio about it. I love this thread ... I give Mid credit for taking a strong take ... even if it was proven to be wrong.
I think I have come around to the theory that no one is "truly clutch" not Kobe, Lebron, Wade, Manu, Melo, Paul, Pierce, Dirk I have seen all of the top clutch players have some shaky clutch moments since Mid first posted this. I think dudes get on a hot streak of making clutch shots and those stick in your mind more than the misses, turnovers etc. The clutch rep is built on those shots even though stats prove almost all those guys miss more than they make ... Even Horry has missed some clutch jumpers in the playoffs. I think all are good closers and I would rather those guys take the last shot over most anyone because they have made a lot as well.
The best clutch shots are the ones created by great offensive plays (like the Green 3 pointer off the Duncan down screen) to force OT last week. Iso clutch shots or even pnr shots to force a switch are iffy when the defense is locked in late in games ...

Killa. Don't drag the rest of the greats into the shit pile with Kobe.
Players shot slightly below their own FG% in crunch time because of limited time, better defense and less options. They don't shoot 25% and act like they make the shots all the time.

Ignore Kobe I still stand by my post. Paul melo and pierce were the clutch argument a few years back all have crashed back to earth. Again I would be happy to have any of those cats take a tough shot, to take a last second shot but rather have Danny Green open off a Spurs misdirection screen tbh.

You are basically saying a well run set is better than ISO ball, which we all know.
Kobe is so ridiculously bad in the clutch because he failed to utilize the other team mates and run good sets, not to mention he is no where close to as good as he or most kobestans think he is.
All the superstars make shots in the clutch at a reasonable rate. All except one.

the problem is the philosophy Iso ball versus good offense. the teams making clutch shots and clutch plays the most are the better coached teams. Spurs, Heat and Mavs have great players that can make tough shots but their offense gets players open looks and that is why Bosh, Green and Ellis are getting clutch shots as much as Lebron, Manu and Dirk. Pop wouldnt pur Kobe or anyone in iso 24/7 sometimes its' Manu in that spot but if he has time it's usually off a screen and there is always another option running on the weak side.

I wont argue with you because it fits your agenda and I dont really care this was about Paul ... and I defended Mid saying that Clutch is mostly "myth" ...
You want to bash Kobe go do it in the hundred of other threads. My point was more that clutch is really dependant on execution on talent or some mystical clutch powers. I started coaching again recently and yes I can run a great play and my players may not make a late game shot. but if I choose to give it my PG (my best player) and say just beat him 1 on 1 and he fails whose fault is that? That is what most elite coaches are doing and they win if they have the best player.

Are you trying to say Phil Jackson is a bad coach? I will say that is very overrated, but he is not a bad coach. And oftentimes, it's not coaches putting Kobe in those situations, it's kobe putting Kobe in those situations. Would you trust him in giving up glory for a win?

Clutchness could be a myth, but choking is not.
In your hypothetical situation, it's obviously the coaches fault by not preparing the team, but will your PG get you fired from your full time job if you don't let him run ISO plays?

You can call whomever you want overrated Kobe, Phil whomever. My point is even Kobe has to follow a play-call. Maybe Phil and others keep calling Kobe plays because that is what Kobe wants, but my point is RC/Pop and even Phil (to a lessor extent) have the balls to choose someone else. Kobe was mostly fine (or average) in the clutch with Phil because we ran good stuff ...since Phil left his clutch numbers (by my accounts ) have gotten worse.
Again it's not about Kobe. Well for you it almost always is. Do you think Paul is great in the clutch, amb? He was the subject of this thread... how about Melo? Pierce?
Nope. All you want to do is talk Kobe.
BTW Phil is a slightly overrated ... but no way should the 2009-2010 Lakers won backtoback titles, so his job with that team makes up for the myth he built riding Mj and Shaqobe.

I don't think CP3 is great in the clutch, I think he is average where he has his moments and his share of failures, and they generally even each other out to the point of his average production.
Melo is great, so is Pierce. They make smart plays during crunch time. Players like Bird and Mike were great in the clutch, so was West. Manu's great, Duncan is average, Parker is bad.
As for the 09-10 titles, those were the most loaded teams during those times, Phil SHOULD have won b2b. If it wasn't for some ridiculous FTs in the 4th of Game 7 against an injured Celtic team, that team would be one and done. Phil Jackson actually did his best coaching in 06 and 07.

At this point, the only bigger retard in clutch moments than Choke Paul is Cock Quitters for continuing to run isos for him in those situations. You'd think after watching him blow a playoff series last year and nearly every close game this season running the "Choke Paul offense," he'd wise up and come up with something else eventually.

I'm predicting Chris Paul will be strong in the clutch this post-season. And yes, I'm sure he might miss a game-winner/game tying shot (as all star players do) and I'll get bumped, but I do think that his "clutch stats" (last 5 minutes, no team ahead by more than 5) in the playoffs will be significantly higher than the league average and even higher than his main PG counterparts (Lilliard, Parker, Westbrook, etc).

Nah, wasn't a jinx attempt. When I made this thread, CP3 was absolutely merciless in the clutch. Even CN agreed. Then a few months later, he got the yips.

Time to put it out on the line.

He seemed to find his groove in the latter part of the season. I thought he'd put in a strong playoff campaign.
But unfortunately he's facing them Silver and Black jerseys, which, as you've said, make him shit his pants.

he is tough to decipher. Even tonight a few times he played hot potato even though the team was looking for him to close this game out. I really think he tires out not that he is a choker. He plays so hard. He is not the GOAT closer or a choker he is a great PG who is undersized dribbles too much sometimes but competes as hard as anyone. Was AI a choker? He never won a title. People think of him as chucker but no one called him a choker ... like they do Paul. It's crazy.

IDK. Pop will make adjustments, obviously, and unlike last time, Doc needs to get off his ass and actually coach instead of waiting three games to finally respond. Based on the season as a whole, the odds still favor the Clippers getting complacent per par and repeating Games 2 and 3 all over again, but maybe they'll actually grow a pair after finally winning when it matters in SA.

Great PG but the play he used to hurt Adavis (accidental) is a prime example of the bullshit he pulls regularly. He stops in Transition veers in to the defender but yet the refs call a foul on Davis who was running back on defense in a straight line? Can you imagine someone doing that to you in a pickup game and calling for a foul? You would punch that dude in the face. Add that to the flopping and exaggerating of contact its like he has taken the worst/best of Dfish, Vlade and prime Manu and has perfected his acting skills. Again great player absolutely wanted him on the Lakers ...but he plays like a drama queen.

People say the game is soft now, but I think most players would be fine in the 80s and 90s with hard fouls. Chris Paul is an exception. Dude would get ridiculed until he took it too far and some dude laid him out. It's sad, because as talented as Chris is, he'll never win a title with the terrible mentality he has.
