Well there's this thread for the game. It's been awhile since I've been able to sit through an entire game and watch. Tonight will mark one of the few times I've been able to do that.

Hopefully Nets show up tonight and give Spurs a run for their money, I don't expect the Nets to win, but Spurs I think is a good test. I hope the Nets can be like the Spurs in the next few years, it's amazing how the spurs always seem good and they are a team you can respect

Respectfully, I disagree. Tony is never going to be a defensive powerhouse. He doesn't have the athleticism of a Ginobili or Leonard. He is not as good a passer as Ginobili, not does he have Ginobili's court vision. But he runs this offense better BY FAR than anyone else on this team, and better than anyone I have seen in watching around 82 games per year since 1993.

I obviously don't mean plenty as in all the time. But look at the Spurs' losses. When the starters' give up a run, it's usually because their offense bogs down. That happens because of a lack of ball movement. That usually happens because Parker or Duncan wanted to play hero ball. The team doesn't need Parker to be a superstar most nights. It's fun for All-Star voting, but the Spurs have been wrecking teams because of how much they share the ball.

No, the Spurs gave up only 3 points early in the 2002-03 season in the first quarter in a home game against Denver. Then again, that Denver team was the worst offensive team in NBA history statistically, even not counting that game. The funny thing about that game was that Kenny Satterfield made the first shot of the game on the first possession and all they got the rest of the quarter was a free throw and missed everything else :lmao

I don't think Parker is lacking anything. His defense is fine, especially when it counts. He's also made some fantastic passes, and he's a great scorer. I am not a Parker-hater by any means.
But it feels like Parker keeps ignoring open shooters in order to shoot long twos or go for contested layups. When it works, Parker looks like an MVP candidate. When it doesn't the Spurs look awful. I think the offense (not in general, but the current tweaks made to it) was designed for Parker to carry the load that Duncan wasn't expected to be able to carry anymore. It's different now; the Spurs can play a better balance between PnR and post-ups. I am not so much blaming Parker, as I assume he's doing what Pop wants. But I am questioning Pop's desire right now.

Well, that was my thought all along, that one thing you can be absolutely sure of is that Parker is playing the offense that Pop wants played, so if your concern is with the play calling, why not say that?
Earlier in the year Parker was criticized for not being aggressive enough, including by Pop. Remember when Pop famously asked him "Are you planning to shoot any time this season? Now, Parker is doing what Pop wants, i.e., driving the lane and getting the defense accustomed to collapsing on him or coming out to meet his tear drop. Then other shooters are freed up and more open. That is what Pop wants. If TP's shot is not falling Pop doesn't change his game plan...hell, Pop NEVER changes his game plan, but TP is still supposed to be opening things up for his other teammates. Remember that Manu was out for a lot and then Leonard was out seemingly forever, so it was only Tim and Tony and occasionally Green and occasionally Gary who would get hot. But it really WAS up to Tony and Tim for a long stretch there. I think that Tony may be slow to adjust to the other scorers on the floor, but he is absolutely playing the game that Pop wants played. Or he would be being screamed at, as he was for his first 8 years here.

Yep. I'm glad that's the way it's looking it will turn out. Looks like they should be able to carve out their own spots on the team, and not overlap too much. Maybe we'll actually get something decent out of the two this year.

That may be obvious to me and you, but some of Spursfan thinks there still is (or wants there to be) a competition for the back up pg spot between the two. I was just pointing out an instance of why that's not the case ;)

There IS competition for the backup pg. Mills doesn't play like the pass-first point guard, so Pop usually pairs him with Ginobili, therefore allowing Mills to play the pg on defense and the SG on offense.

I'd like to see this too. On the other hand, I guess Pop weighed it out and decided giving Jax some extra minutes to try to find his rhythm was more important, which I can't really disagree with considering Kawhi is already playing pretty great. But ya, I too want to see more Kawhi!! lol

I agree with you about Pop's system. But I don't think Parker can be let off the hook. The basic idea of the Spurs' offense right now is for Parker to shoot if he's open, or pass to the roller or a shooter if the defense collapses on him. He does the first two things well enough, and I would assume the majority of his assists are to Duncan and Splitter. That's fine, but it is his responsibility to find shooters when he is getting contested by multiple players at the rim. I don't think he's been doing that enough.
I can't remember the last time he passed it on the break to anyone besides Ginobili or Duncan. Most of the time he scores or gets a foul, but there are a good deal of times where he gets out of control (not like Leonard, though) and either turns it over or gets bailed out. I don't think that it's Pop's game plan for him to do that. I just think that it's the remnants of tweak that they've forgot to remove.

PG is an offensive term. The person who everybody passes the ball to to run an offensive play is, in my mind the PG. Who cares who guards the other team's point guard. That job use to go to Bowen more often than not, but nobody would have ever called him a PG. lol The fact is that when they're both on the court, Nando has run 90%+ of the plays. I'm just make an observation, and if from that observation you take it that 33 games into the season might be enough to have see consensus coalesce among the *players* that at this point it's Nando's job to loose. No big soap box here, I just think this whole "back up PG competition" is, *at this point* maintained more on ST than in reality.

Well then, by that definition, De Colo's not the backup point guard either. When De Colo's on the court, he's also played with Ginobili (as both are bench players). Ginobili plays the role of the playmaker and is responsible for directing the Spurs' plays whilst De Colo find himself in a similar role to Patty, although he's not nearly as effective since he's not as good of a shooter as him.
Therefore, based on your definition, Ginobili's the true backup point guard and De Colo and Patty are shooting guards. The fact of the matter is that as long as Ginobili is played off the bench, he will remain the team's primary play maker and that Patty, De Colo or Neal will most likely be forced to play a spot up shooting role.
