This morning I woke up startled and breathing heavily. I began to panic and turned on my bedside lamp. After wiping the sweat from my forehead and regaining my composure I began to settle down and understood why today has me feeling antsy.

Milwaukee

Great teams come and go, some leave you with lasting memories of a great rivalries while others fade away into obscurity.

And then there is Milwaukee.

I can't think of a single team the Spurs have struggled with more in the Duncan era than the Bucks. Not physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually whatever you want to call.

Playing this team was our Vietnam.

As recently as December 29th, 2012 I witnessed a live mass murder on television. The Bucks had destroyed the Heat 104-85. People had long speculated why LeBron had begun to lose his hair.

Now I know why.

He knew 4 times a year he was going to have to face Milwaukee.

Tonight isn't just a game, it's a stand. It's something we all have to go through. I don't know what's going to happen, and maybe deep down inside I'm too scared to find out. Milwaukee has the highest alcohol consumption per person in all of the U.S (look it up). People are so angry and depressed out in Wisconsin that they have nothing else to turn to. "Fear the Deer" isn't merely a motto, it's a way of life.

I'm going to quote the greatest sequel of all time as it captures what the Spurs will be facing tonight in a hostile arena:

Michael Corleone: I saw a strange thing today. Some rebels were being arrested. One of them pulled the pin on a grenade. He took himself and the captain of the command with him. Now, soldiers are paid to fight; the rebels aren't.

Hyman Roth: What does that tell you?

Michael Corleone: They could win.

Godspeed and may the good guys win.

Spurs have won 5 of the last 6 games with the Bucks. Last season's 34 point game by Stephen Jackson is the only loss since 2008.

So I really am going crazy

Not really -- in the Duncan era, the Spurs are 15-13 against Milwaukee, and 6-8 in Milwaukee against the Bucks.

And that's after going 5-1 in the last 6 games in this series.

By the way, tonight's game had a great chance to turn into a debacle, with one of Pop's all-time favorite refs as the crew chief -- Zach Zarba -- and a crew (Zarba, Pat Fraher, Brent Barnaky) that really isn't trusted when the chips are on the table (collectively, tonight's crew has called 28 playoff games, including 5 games past the first round).

Splitter should get blocked a few times tonight...

Would be a good time to talk about a trade with the Bucks tbh.

The Bucks should start Ilyasova again. Sanders Ilyasova Mbah a Moute, that frontline wouldn't suck tbh... We send them Bonner to backup Ilyasova, they give Dalembert another chance at backup center and they send us Udoh...

Who would you prefer: Henson, Udoh or Sanders?

Who would you prefer: Henson, Udoh or Sanders?

Well every team in the league wants Sanders and Henson's value isn't set so I don't think they would trade him at this point, I'd settle for Udoh, too bad is rebounding is pretty underwhelming (which probably makes it possible to get him in the first place) but at least he would give us so nice rim protection.

I don't love this matchup. Shotblockers in the middle and quick guards on the perimeter could cause headaches, tbh.

It's true. The bucks give us fits, and for some reason, it's been that way for a while. I think the spurs will win, they're rolling right now, but the problem is that this mediocre bucks team will hang with the spurs long enough to force pop to play our starters heavy minutes. Not exactly ideal, with NY looming. Oh, and with the utmost respect to the corleon fan. I vote Empire Strikes Back for greatest sequel: Luke "i don't believe it!" Yoda " that is why you fail."

@ the Bradley Center

2000 & 2001: Humiliating losses for the Spurs

2002: We lose in overtime by 3 after leading most the game. Timmy misses a bank shot 3 pointer that would have forced double OT.

2003: One of the more thrilling wins all season for the Spurs (one of several in March '03...); the Malik Rose 34 point game, wild scoring runs on each side, the Bucks couldn't miss from three, they even lead 102-97 with a minute left but we managed to come back and win

2004: An unforgettable loss: We lead most the game, including starting off the game up 19-2 midway through the first period. Then, we get killed on the boards in the second half, and the infamous Tim Duncan game-winning dunk at the buzzer that didn't count. We lose by one.

2006: Another unforgettable loss (around Christmastime in Dec. 2005): Again, we lead most the game, but the Bucks force OT, and the Spurs take a 4 point lead late in OT, but manage to score twice and then get the ball back with 0.7 seconds to play... and Andrew Bogut makes a ridiculous tap-fadeaway to break the Spurs' collective hearts.

2007: Yet again, we lead most of the game, but the Bucks torch us in the fourth quarter and we squander the lead and the game.

2009: (Nov. 2008) Another tough close loss

2012: Another close loss in which the Spurs had many chances to win late, Dick of course being the culprit both on defense vs. Stephen Jackson and for missing a wide open three that would have forced OT. Spurs lose by 3.

Paranoid pop has also taken it into his head to have a major agenda against a some of the guard depth, without any real solution to try to upgrade. He hasn't seemed to notice a rather complete lack of 3rd/4th big, and that contractually both of the guards he seems to have issues with are great for what they are being payed. I tend to agree with him that we have a bit of a redundancy issue with regards to having a couple to many guards that are not big enough to guard many 2's and really not fully able to play point against high level competition. That said I see the lack of bigs as a far more glaring and pressing problem.

48% is too high, and considering they also had a lot of misses that lead to offensive rebounds (including 5 on one possession)... they should have shot better, and if the Bucks hadn't turned the ball over so much, we would have given up an absolutely astronomical number of points to them.

This shotty defense is absolutely unacceptable and won't get us far at all in the playoffs.

So let's be clear:

Regular season blowouts mean nothing because they're fools gold and don't count.

But when we give up too many points, suddenly it means something? You can't have it both ways. Our defense has been much better since Leonard came back. Even so, we're going to have less than stellar defensive games, especially when our offense is rolling. The more first chance shots we make, the less opportunity we have to get oboards and dominate time of possession. Milwaukee hit a LOT of jumpers that half. I'm sure Pop isn't happy, but I'm sure he's a lot happier than he would be if our lanes were wide open and being cut to shreds.

It's been a trend since 2011. Every year people complain about it 15-20 times a season (i.e. calling us the S.A. Suns) and every year the older BNSFs tell the complainers to calm down, and every year we get scorched in the playoffs. :bang

We're just not the defensive team we used to be and we don't have the players we need to play that way, so we have to play with what we have. No, it's probably not enough to win a championship as we saw last year but you go with what you got. At least we have a winning team and not the Bobcats.

This year has been different in terms of defensive performance to date. If the numbers tend towards the past couple seasons, then you'll have an argument.
