"BEIJING (AP) -- An American basketball player has been suspended after testing positive for marijuana in what officials are calling the Chinese professional league's first doping case since it was created in the mid-1990s.

The official Xinhua news agency says 26-year-old Marcus Williams of the Shanxi Zhongyu Brave Dragons was banned for six months on Monday after testing positive on Dec. 9.

Williams has been in China since 2010. He also briefly played in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs and Los Angeles Clippers.
Xinhua quoted Williams as apologizing to fans, and vowing to ''improve and grow from this.''"
