Malik Rose was interviewed on H2G Radio (http://www.blogtalkradio.com/h2gradio/2012/11/20/hard-2-guard-radio-with-guest-malik-rose) last night and the biggest point of the interview for me was when he talked about Bynum. Apparently, people down in Philly are questioning what’s really going on with him and his “alleged” injury. Glad to see they’re looking at this logically because something is definitely fishy with Bynum’s story.
Rose also talks about his most embarrassing moment in his basketball career when he played at Rucker Park, whether he thinks Phil Jackson or Gregg Popovich is a better coach, admits he was a bum in high school, and being a GM in the future.

On Andrew Bynum
Man, I don’t know, man. That’s a frustrating subject down here in Philly. I don’t know what’s more frustrating, Andy Reid and the Eagles or Andrew Bynum and his bowling…I guess he’s [Andrew Bynum] on the meds, man…He said he had a setback recently and his timetable for return has been pushed back so there’s no schedule for that.
Why Bowling [Andrew Bynum]?
He’s not a bad guy but he’s kind of loose…kind of weird. He just kind of said, “I like bowling. I wanted to go bowling.” For as long as I’ve been around the game and seeing as many injuries as I’ve seen, I’ve never really heard of someone having an hurt knee and then going bowling and doing the exact same thing to the other knee. So, it’s kind of made my spidey sense go off but if he says he has issues, he has issues.
On Spurs
They’re always going to have that nucleus with Tim, Tony and Manu- those guys know the system and they know each other…they do a good job of surrounding those guys with good role players. Guys, who do one or two things but do them well; like Gary Neal or Matt Bonner. The real key with San Antonio is how healthy are they going to be come April, May and June? That’s kind of been their achilles heel for the last couple of seasons. As their health goes, they will go.
On Who’s a Better Coach: Phil Jackson or Gregg Popovich
It’s close but I really have to go with Popovich just because he didn’t have the talent that Phil Jackson has had. Everywhere he’s [Phil Jackson] gone he’s had deep, deep, deep teams. The closest Pop has ever come to that is the twin towers and that was early on in his career, before he became as seasoned as he is now.
They’re both good coaches, though. I think a sign of a good coach is if you have a different set of guys, you can adapt your coaching style to them.
On If He Wants to be a Coach or GM in the Future
It’s definitely my dream to run my own franchise. I definitely want to be a GM [general manager]. It’s taking a little bit longer and it’s a little bit harder than I thought it would be to get my foot in the door but I’m going to get there, eventually. I just have to be patient and keep preparing.
Who He Would Draft First, a Star Big or a Star Small?
I would go with the big guy. I’m from the school of ‘you can’t teach height’, especially if he’s skilled. If he’s a little raw I would probably shy away from it but I would definitely lean towards height. Going towards how the rules are in the NBA now, it’s really tough to guard guys on the perimeter and if you have a good point guard, he can really dominate the game and carry a team…so the point guards are tough to pass on.
Most Embarrassing Moment
It was back when I was in college. I was playing up at 155th [Rucker Park] and I’m doing work, straight housing the joint. Somebody throws me an oop, I catch it and I get hung. I got hung and fell flat on my back! I think everybody on the baseline down there was circling around me, laughing and pointing at me. It was the worst! But that was the Rucker. I was playing for my man, Mousey on Team Posse.
Best Memory as a Young Ball Player
I wasn’t that good in high school. I was the third or fourth best player on the team. I was just the rebounder and I didn’t really score much. My last game in high school we played against Rasheed Wallace…we lost 84-44. It wasn’t anything pretty. I had an O-K high school career and then when I got to college I had a little growth spurt and I learned how to jump so that’s when things got better. Anything before that is really boring radio.
On Knicks Veterans
I think the Veterans are really playing a bigger role, especially Jason Kidd and Prigioni. I think when you have the amount of talent that the Knicks have, you have to have strong guards that the talent can respect because they’re the ones who is going to have to check the talent.
Not to take anything away from him but if Melo is jacking bad shots and Toney Douglas tells him “yo, stick with the offense,” Melo’s going to ignore him. If Jason Kidd says something like that, or even Raymond Felton, he’s probably going to listen to them a bit more just because of the respect that those two guys carry.
On Knicks Being a Dangerous Team
The Knicks are scary, man. When healthy, I would say they have the most talent in the league. I think the Atlantic Division is the toughest division in the league just because of all the changes that have been made. I have a small place in my heart for them and I’m happy that they’re doing well.
