View Full Version : Lakers: Dwight had to be restrained from going after Kobe

Dwight Howard and Kobe Bryant just can’t get along, and there’s a team in Brooklyn that might be waiting to pick up the pieces.

A league source told the Daily News that the Lakers stars got into a heated exchange following a New Year’s Day loss to the 76ers, and Bryant went for a low blow – referencing and agreeing with Shaquille O’Neal’s criticisms of Howard being soft.

Howard was restrained from going at his teammate, according to the source, and there have been rumblings from the center’s camp that he’s been unhappy with Bryant since earlier in the season. Quote:

Not for bitching his way out of Orlando, but for being a dumbass and waiving his ETO, is what he deserves this for.

With the way Dwight took blatant shots at Kobe thru the media, and how Dwight is too sensitive for any kind of criticism, I wouldn't doubt it to be true.

Dwight's doing God's work, helping old enemies find common ground. I'm already gearing up to hear all about how Joe Johnson is exactly what the Lakers need to get back to the Finals.

New Jersey would be stupid to ship anything to LA. If these rumors are true, no way D-Ho re-signs, and the Nets will just pick him up off the market this summer without losing a single asset.

Nets won't have the cap room. Teams like Dallas, Atlanta, and Houston can pay him if he decides to walk. The Nets would HAVE to make a trade.

I just figured they'd jump at the chance to get out from under JJ's contract for all the good he's doing them right now.

Both good points, but they'd still be asshats for doing anything to help the Lakers dig out of the hole they've made for themselves.

Ship J.J. anywhere but L.A., buy Dwight.

Nobody smart is taking his contract, but look at what they signed Nash for. Pringles and Nash were a big part of why Johnson has all that money owed to him in the first place. I could see both parties amenable to a reunion. Plus if these reports are true and the Lakers are imploding worse than anyone dreaded/hoped they don't have the luxury of waiting around for a smart play to present itself. I think the geniuses that constructed this team have one more short sighted desperation move in them before they realize they need to blow it up.

I think they'd go for at big man first, like Gasol for Love + fillers. Rudy Gay is on the trading block too, so who knows.

Though Brooklyn was desperate to make moves that would entice Deron to stay.

Lakers may be getting pretty desperate...just kidding, I agree it is highly unlikely anyone takes JJ right now but you can never say never in a league where Hedo's awful contract was moved twice!

I don't think you understand how the cap works. Nash was signed-and-traded to the Lakers, and got as big of a contract as he did because Phoenix had his Bird rights. The only way that the Lakers were able to get Nash and only send picks back is because they had traded Lamar Odom for a trade exception, which they used to fit Nash's contract.

Even if Brooklyn somehow dumped Joe Johnson's contract completely (highly, highly unlikely btw), they would still be a little over the cap. To sign Dwight to a max contract outright as a free agent, they would have to get under the cap by that amount, which means dumping an additional $20-25M in salary. The Nets have 4 highly paid players outside of Johnson (Deron Williams, Gerald Wallace, Brook Lopez, Kris Humphries) that eat up nearly the whole cap by themselves.

Basically, if Dwight is going to be a Net, it will have to be a sign-and-trade. The Lakers would never take Joe Johnson back, but they might be willing to trade Dwight and Artest for Humphries and Wallace.

maybe the rockets can pull off a win tuesday. then the Spurs and OKC will have a chance to send the lakers into a tailspin. that's when howard will seriously start considering leaving the lakers.

Unless the Nets can dump about 15M in salary, they won't be able to receive a player in a sign and trade next summer. The only realistic way for Howard to wind up in Brooklyn is via a conventional trade before the trade deadline.

Good catch. I forgot that tax teams can't receive players in a sign-and-trade anymore.
