I know it's anecdotal but all my industrial customers seem to be kicking ass and I've got about as much work as I can possibly get around to...what are y'all seeing out there? (those that actually have jobs in the private sector)

Our sales have slowed down a bit the last few months, but in general can't really complain (yet), tbh...

I'm with a large engineering firm and we're in a bunch of different industries. Petrochem is booming. Private utility work is strong. Land development is good in Dallas and Houston, but not nearly as good everywhere else in the state. Anything public sector like transportation, public utilities and public works is still kind of sluggish, but that's to be expected since that type of work requires tax dollars and will therefore lag behind what the rest of the economy is doing. Things are definitely better than they were a couple of years ago though.

The economy in So Cal is not booming…I reminds me of 1982 when businesses were very conservative…Companies carry large staffs of part time workers saving on health care…Film studios produce lots of television and few films…This has a trickledown effect on the local Mom & Pop businesses…Unlike Congress the working class does not spend what it does not have…Consequently doughnut shops, dry cleaners, nail salons, etc are all complaining that they are slow…American car dealers offer discounts & rebates on new cars but not like it was in 2009…

What is booming is the gun industry…California always gets hit the hardest so given the current politics people are buying everything they can get their hands on…Big-5 rarely has more than one person waiting at the gun counter…Last Saturday I went in to buy tennis shoes & the line at the gun counter was 15 deep…The local gun store had a line 20 deep just waiting to get in…There are no AR-15’s or lever action rifles for sale & gun stores cannot order them…There are no clips for sale even in the 5 round capacity…There is more gun hysteria than when Bill Clinton was elected or after the LA riots…Even School districts are quietly buying up AR-15’s for their police staff…

Still, there are a lot of people looking for work. I placed an ad this morning about 11am for an entry level training position and stressed that it was hot, hard, dirty work and already have 16 resumes. Some clearly won't work but I was still surprised at the number. Out of those I have narrowed it down to about six so far on the first cut. I expect to get a lot more responses tonight.

It's a skilled position but I don't expect to hire someone off the street with 100% of what I need so I will train if they have good basics and I like them. Involves, cutting, welding, (code type welding) mechanical skills, some electrical/controls work, critical thinking to solve problems, etc. Not for everyone but I have a really tight team. I've only had one guy quit in 20 years but that was to take a traveling job putting up cell phone towers that paid stupid money in exchange for never being home.

I just turned down a programming job which is a good sign since I wasn't even looking, they came to me. The impression I get from my techie friends is that things are good but not awesome. For my blue collar friends things seem to be booming. Real work usually gets the ball rolling for the rest of us so I think good times are ahead for Texas.
