We should start a pool over who Baynes will posterize first. That and the rebounding and option it gives Pop to not have to always go small with the second unit is what I'm most excited about.

And now with Baynes on the team, is this the dunkiest Spurs team ever? Tiago's dunking now, Timmy's dunking like it's going out of style, Kawhi's dunking, and Manu was even throwing down some dunks before his latest injury. Now add Baynes to that, could this make the Spurs exciting to the average idiot NBA fan?? :wow

David Pick, who has been really close to the whole story, also said it was a 2 years guaranteed contract with a $350K buyout.

Now that the signing is done, Spurs could also be more active to trade away Blair.

It depends on the Spurs' cap situation (in addition to Baynes' performance, obviously). If the Spurs have cap room, then the poison pill won't take effect. I imagine they will if Baynes blows up to the extent that the Spurs would want him on a big-money deal, as that would probably mean Splitter wasn't retained or is ineffective or that Duncan hit a major breakdown and wants to retire. Otherwise, it wouldn't make sense to spend a lot of money on a third-string center.

Thats simply not true. If Baynes turns out a good player (i.e. Asik level or better) then on his next contract we can only pay him a max of $5m in each of the first 2 years. That could mean a massive cap hit in a 3rd year, in Asiks case it would have cost them $12m.

Such a contract could have a big impact on our rebuilding efforts.

You're right. I thought that the exception did not exist if the matching team had cap room.

But that will only be a problem if the Spurs Baynes explodes enough to warrant 25/3 like Asik did. The only way he gets that opportunity is if Splitter isn't re-signed or if Duncan is ready to retire. Otherwise, it just wouldn't make sense to pay a third-string center that kind of money (or even just the average of his salaries). No matter how good he is, if Splitter and Duncan are still better, let someone else overpay for him (or better yet, trade or S&T him).

If Splitter gets re-signed this off-season, there's no reason to worry about Baynes playing enough minutes to warrant a big-money deal. If Splitter doesn't, and Baynes plays well enough to get an Asik-level deal, then I doubt he'd sign a poison-pill deal unless he wanted to leave the Spurs or if the Spurs had serious doubts about keeping him. It doesn't make sense for a player to take less money in year 1 and to turn down Bird raises.

Of course he would, because it would by definition be many million more than the Spurs would offer.

I do agree that he probably won't get enough minutes from Pop next year to warrant an Asik like deal, but we have opened the door if he is a free agent in 2014.

I think he was saying that he wants to bring toughness, he wants to be a toughness type player like Reggie Evans. I don't think he was saying that his game is like Reggie's. Evans is good at what he does rebound the ball, hopefully Baynes can do just that rebound and get some easy buckets.

For non-stars, Reggie Evans is one I always hope that Spurs could sign. He is a tough blue-collar guy, yet with no cockiness like Perkins. He plays for a lot of teams. Plus, he is not expensive at all. Maybe he has something which I don't know that Pop/Bufford don't like, it's strange that there is not even rumor for him coming to Spurs.

DX uses the NBA draft combine measurements, and is considered the gold standard. Most teams measure in shoes, so Baynes would be listed as 6'11" by most teams. Spurs will probably list him at 6'10, not caring about such things for the most part.

This kid can only help bolster, what has been a woefully undersized and underskilled, Spurs frontline. I mean, once you get past Duncan and Splitter, the dropoff in both skill level and size is significant.

I cannot wait to see him play and hope he gets some run versus the Mavs. And I cannot wait until he develops and eventually moves up the food chain to become the 3rd or 4th big.

Yeah right, call me when Splitter gets as many Triple Double as Diaw got in his career and call me when he can shoot or pass as well as he does...

Diaw is a very odd player though, and comparing him with nearly any post player comes up with some interesting conclusions.

You have to take into account that Diaw was drafted by the Hawks with the intention of him playing guard next to Jason Terry. But he ended up just being a trainwreck instead. He was moved to Phoenix in the Joe Johnson trade and they played him at SF. It wasn't until Amare Stoudemire got hurt that the Suns got a wild hair and really played the guy in the post. He actually ended up playing the vast majority of the season as the Run n' Gun Sun's starting center, garnering the Most Improved Player award. After that hes been considered a combo-forward that has slumped more towards the PF position largely because of weight gains that have slowed him down.

As a result: his passing vision and playmaking abilities are incredibly advanced. His rebounding prowess is underdeveloped. He has the handles of a guard, because he is/was a guard, but has picked up post play later in life. Statistically hes a potential monster, as he can score (when he cares to shoot) fairly well, has excellent passing ability, and plays a position that often puts him in position to snag rebounds.

Hes a great player to have, and I'm a huge fan of the fact that we grabbed him up last season. But hes a very non-traditional post player.

Oh, you're talking quantity over quality. I misunderstood.

To a certain extent, yeah. Not to say that Robinson's dunks were just run of the mill though. It's more about perception outside of the city. Most of Robinson's really impressive dunks were never seen by anyone outside of San Antonio. I remember him dunking on the entire Indiana front line, I remember him facialing some of the best shot blockers in the league, and he was always good for a one handed alley oop on a fast break.

At the bottom of the interview, it lists Baynes' age as 27 with a birthdate of 9/12/86. I assume that's a misunderstanding of the order of the numbers (Day/Month/Year vs. Month/Day/Year) of his birthdate. Draftexpress has him as 26 years old with 12/09/86 as his birthdate. Everywhere in the world, except America it seems, reads birthdays DAY/MONTH/YEAR. For some reason the USA put it out of order and goes MONTH/DAY/YEAR. Regardless, 12/9/86 and 9.12.86 are the same date, point in fact.

And besides, if he was born December 1986 he'd be 26. But if he was born a whole 3 months earlier in September 1986, he'd still be 26. It's a moot point.

The fact that the article says hes 27 is obviously just a simple math error.

I have almost zero expectations for this guy. He's simply a large body; every year the Spurs enter the preseason with more prospects who have more individual strengths than Baynes. Maybe one is a crazy athlete, another lit it up from beyond the arc in summer league. One has a prototypical athletic PF body, the next guy has the potential to be the backup defensive long SF the Spurs' fans beg for.

Aron Baynes is simply a tall guy with an NBA body, a third string point guard and an assistant coach who can vouch he isn't a dolt.

And yet I have this gut feeling that this signing is about to really pay off.

Your first sentence is a really general statement and not really sure if it's a comparison or........... I think that Baynes is a low post man, but have to admit, that pretty much comes from comments on here and some local media, not research, because I hold ST members in the highest esteem.:worthy: This would allow Timmy to be more mobile, but isn't that job cinched up by Splitter this year? I really don't see Pop deviating from using TS almost exclusively with TD. In his maturity(old age) Pop appears to be moving toward pairings imho. With Diaw being a comfortable 3rd big I wonder if this leaves Baynes out in the cold this year? My point is that I don't think Baynes will fit on the court with Splitter, and with Tiago tied to Duncan, who you think AB will fit on the court with?

Your first sentence is a really general statement and not really sure if it's a comparison or...........

I meant, Spurs are the worst offensive rebounding team in the NBA:
http://www.basketball-reference.com/leagues/NBA_2013.html#misc::13

They are 30th in ORB% with 20.9%. If they continue to be that bad, they will be the second worst defensive rebounding of the NBA history after last year Celtics.

The explanation of that very low number is quite straight forward:
- Spurs perimeter players are focused on getting back on defense instead of going after offensive rebounds. That's Pop wish.
- Bonner and Diaw are mostly playing on the perimeter offensively and don't get offensive rebounds.
- Splitter and Duncan are getting some offensive rebounds but they aren't really skilled in that area.
- Blair has a knack for getting offensive rebounds but he doesn't play.

From his stats and from what I've seen from him, Baynes goes hard after offensive rebounds. That's a skill/attribute that will be welcomed given Spurs weakness in that area.

With Diaw being a comfortable 3rd big I wonder if this leaves Baynes out in the cold this year? My point is that I don't think Baynes will fit on the court with Splitter, and with Tiago tied to Duncan, who you think AB will fit on the court with?

Baynes should fit well with Diaw, Bonner and small ball (Kawhi/Jack at PF). Saying that, I don't expect him to play a lot. Spurs primary PF/C rotation should remain Duncan/Splitter/Diaw. Baynes could get some minutes outside garbage time when one of Duncan or Splitter won't be available because of an injury, DNP-rest, foul troubles... He could also be used in some match-ups like against Dwight Howard.

good signing bonners time as a spur may be over .......... for the haters still hating on blair .......... pm me when baynes has a 30/20 nba game ........
quit living in the past dude, blair fucking sucks, accept it already. Tony Delk scored 50 points in an nba game once. some nobody in orlando broke shaq and dwight's highest rebound total. a 30/20 game 3 years ago after getting progressively worse each season doesn't mean shit.

i hear mike finley is making a comeback, he averaged 20 points a game once, maybe we should sign him up :rolleyes

how funny was it when Tim Watson (legend of Australian Football BTW) asked him if they had retired Gazes spot on the bench and hung it from the rafters...

Or is that Aussie humor that doesn't translate?

No it was just plain funny. I assume Gaze is a pretty big deal in OZ, but in the states obviously there's no reason to know him. Unless you're a Spurs fan maybe, but you still would be unlikely to care about him. Those kinds of juxtapositions are prime ground for comedy. It was a good interview, thanks for posting.

G'day all fellow spurs lovers,

Just joined up after lurking here for years. Had been a member of that other site since 2001 and havent been there for yonks......basically because it sucks ass!

My main motivation for joining is that i can now block that (ashamed to say) fellow country man, knob jockey TDMVPDPOY. So sick of seeing his uneducated dumbass one liners....i just hope the rest of you guys and gals dont think all Aussies are that stupid.

I have been a Spurs fan since 1992 when i attended a Spurs V Mavs game with an aunt who lives in Fortworth TX. I used to follow the Fakers prior to that only because i liked Magic and Kareem. It was DROB that turned me into a Spur for life....his humilty, the way he carried himself on and off the court and the respect people showed for him made me an instant fan of him, and then the Spurs organisation.

I became such a supporter of the Spurs that i came to S.A in 99 for game 1 and 2 or the finals V knicks and hung around till we won the championship and partied in the streets like most of you till the early hours of the morning - I decided i was going when i was at home watching the Spurs V Jailblazers and Sean hit that unforgettable shot.....i knew it was going to be something special. Since then i have seen spurs play in LA in 2002 and 2005 VS Clips and Lakers....both winning games thank god!!

Anyways i do intend to post a bit now that i've finally made an account.

As far as Baynes......this guy is choking to prove himself and show that he belongs....for one i hope he makes it.

“It doesn’t matter who we are… what matters is our program. No one cared who I was until I put on the silver and black.”

*Looks at Deron Williams* “You merely adopted the silver and black. I was born in it.” (via @DavidRob50)

“Calm down, Blake Griffin! Now’s not the time for fear. That comes later.”

I wonder how ST will react though when Bud plays Bonner tonight over Baynes.

He won't tho, we need Baynes rebounding too much with Tim out, the Hornets got something like twice as many rebounds as us, it's a no brainer to play Baynes.

If anything Bonner could play some minutes at the 3 when SJax plays like shit. Being the 5th big/3rd SF is good enough for Bonbon tbh.

if he can play physical and throw down 1-2 dunks that's all i can really ask for in a debut. he should actually be in line for minutes with Timmy out. although i would also expect the spurs go play small quite often with Jax or Kawhi playing the 4 for stretches at a time, so its not like the world of minutes will be available with Tiago likely playing about 30 minutes.

oh yeah, speaking of which, Kawhi good to go and will play vs Dallas
