View Full Version : All Star Reserves To Be Named On TNT At 6 PM CST (Update: Parker and Duncan in!)

Some on twitter have mentioned, if Dwight can't play in the All-Star game, and Pop is head coach of West he could designate Duncan as starter.

**Assumption that Duncan is named a reserve.

Duncan has to be a lock. Last night, TP said that Duncan has been the best bigman in the NBA ... which is true.

TP should make it and I'd be shocked if he didn't. However, there is a chance that he doesn't make it -- like if coaches mostly went with Harden/Westbrook as their guards and Curry and a big as their wildcards.

Is it just coaches who vote for reserves or is it the media as well?

Didn't he do that in 2011 when Yao was a voted starter (yet of course only played 5 games that season)

IMO him being snubbed wouldn't be so bad, because last year he missed the All-Star Game and went on a tear post All-Star break. Of course, the problem is that he's playing great ball in the first half of the season.

TD has been playing great no doubt but I would much rather him rest especially since he's sitting out games for that knee. We all know that if that knee becomes a chronic problem for him at this stage of the season it's gonna be almost impossible for a deep playoff run at the very least to compete for the title without him.

Abbott: Tim Duncan, and he'll be backing up Dwight Howard who has been less individually productive and on a far worse team. I imagine Duncan would prefer a weekend off, but he has played far too well for that.

Foster: Tim Duncan. Duncan is posting some of the best numbers in his illustrious career, and his defense at age 36 is a big reason the Spurs have the third-most efficient defense in the league. If Kevin Durant and LeBron James weren't so otherworldly, we'd be talking about Duncan for MVP. It's a crime he's not an All-Star starter.

Haberstroh: Tim Duncan. Are we sure he isn't Benjamin Button? When most players hang 'em up, Duncan has raised his scoring average by two points each of the last two seasons since turning 34 years old. The guy can barely jump over an iPhone yet he's blocking shots more often than any point in his career. At this point, I'm guessing he'll be an All-Star until he is 60 years old.

Nowell: Tim Duncan. Duncan doesn't care about this, but he's simply been too good this year to ignore.

Thought these were all nice writeups about the big fella :)

No real complains with the East reserves, I'm actually really happy coaches recognized Irving and Holiday despite their teams' records. I've never been a fan of the notion that just because your team isn't playing well, you can't be an all star. Clearly, Irving and Holiday have had all star seasons. My real problem with the outcome are KG and Dwight...idk if Dwight even deserved to be an all star this year tbh, and Brook should have had KG's spot (maybe not starting, but somewhere on the team)

So happy Tim And Tony are in! But Duncan should be starting! Howard is garbage! With the way he plays trying to use his athletic abilities, his knees wont last four more years!

Howard could skip the game with his shoulder injury, the spurs could also have Pop as the coach.:blah

In retrospect Duncan was no brainier (Dirk, K Love both missed a ton of time and Gasol playing like he was he was out to lunch) 17.5 pts, 9.8 rpg, 2.7 bpg, ball so hard indeed.

Howard out injured, Pop starts Duncan, then sits him and TP at the first timeout for the rest of the game. Make it so, Pop!

Howard is just another guy the media jumped all over because he is flashy and had nice stats but he will never win a damn thing.. As soon as he leaves the game he will be quickly forgotten..

Curry > Aldridge .... but Golden State got Lee in so not that bad of a snub. Two Warriors might have been overboard.

What does that matter? This is the type of foolish logic that led to Pierce getting snubbed in favor of Deng.

I'd have went Curry over Aldridge too, but the biggest snub by far was B. Lopez.

Reading a lot about how it should have been Curry over Parker. You mean, instead of Randolph or Aldridge? That makes no sense to me, just another case of Parker being underrated.

I was honestly hoping both would get left out. Duncan needs to stay fresh and Parker would use a snub as motivation to tear it up the rest of the year.

Congrats to both for the well-deserved nods though.

Meh. Duncan will probably only play 3 minutes total. And Parker still tore it up after making last year.

Lopez should be in there for sure. Whether he replaces Deng or KG, he deserves a spot. Curry absolutely needs a spot in the West. Tbh, most of my Laker fan friends don't think Dwight deserved a spot this year. I'd agree

Clippers lost. If Spurs win 2 of their next 3 (@Mavs, Suns and Bobcats), Pop will coach the west regardless of what Clippers do. I don't really care about all star but it would be nice to have Pop coaching Duncan and Parker. It should be also funny.

Same for Ibaka and JR Smith.

Coaches have done a great job at picking all star. You can make a case for Curry and Lopez but it's not like they clearly deserve to be in instead of another player.

Just good to see Tim getting the respect he deserves.

Yes, I know he probably doesn't give two shits at this point, and could use the rest, but still....this is Tim fucking Duncan we are talking about. The last ASG, as frivolous as it is, just felt wrong without the Big Fundamental in it.

Exactly. The easy one to nit-pick is Aldridge, but considering he is averaging 20 and 8 (better than Duncan, Griffin, and Howard)...that would be an awful big penalty to leverage just because the rest of his team is weighing him down.

Lee, who was the other pick who "got Curry's spot", is doing 20 and 11. Randolph is only doing 16 and 12, but Memphis has done well enough to deserve a pick and, despite the Kyrie Irving pick, winning does factor into these decisions.

I think what it boiled down to, is that Golden State already got one player (which is good for a middle of the pack team), and that the West team was already pretty heavy with guards and wings (Durant, Paul, Kobe, Parker, Westbrook, Harden).

Curry is top 3 in three-point shooting though, so hopefully he will get a shot at the 3-point contest and get to be there, at least.

Texas_Ranger
01-25-2013, 06:34 AM
I'd even pick Gallinari over Crawford who is just like JR Smith (which I could see being an all star this year, cause he did play great when Melo was out) and Louis Williams. They are instant offense guys that shoot and that's it. And only Smith is the one that actually plays defense from those guys.

lol at the picture. timmy probably wouldn't mind playing 10 min. he says he doesn't care but he obviously enjoys being there. and it's in houston, he could fly the same day, play 10 min, have fun, and come back. but maybe he wants to rest that knee.

i think Duncan playing next to Splitter quiets that sort of talk. And its not like Timmy has played a different role since Tiago was moved into the starting lineup (people can't say "oh well Duncan moved to power forward AFTER Tiago became a starter). Tim has played the exact same way before and after Tiago's insertion into the lineup. And if somebody argues Tiago is playing PF and TD is playing C then they are going way out of their way to make an incorrect point lol

Tim has been playing center all along. He's defended by the other centers, defend the other centers, it's really simple, when you play center at both ends you're a center.

all the clowns on espn boards are mad because tp9 got in, saying curry>parker, smh
I like Curry and wish him the best.
But I don't get how you make a case for Curry over Parker.
1) Individual numbers:
- same TS%
- more point for Curry 21 vs. 20
- more assists for Parker 7.4 vs 6.6
It looks the same until you consider per36min or PER
- Parker 21.7/8.2 (PER 22.9) - 19.7/7.2 (PER 19.8) Curry

Parker win!

2) Team...
Top 2 team... enough said

3) +/-
Parker best +/- on the team, 3rd in the NBA
It is safe to say Curry will not close the gap using any advanced stats based on +/-

4) Defense?
- Team: Spurs top 5 defense, GSW middle of the pack
- Opponent counterpart production (PER):
Parker:13
Curry: 16.2
