http://www.dallasnews.com/sports/dallas-mavericks/headlines/20130124-mavericks-chris-kaman-why-david-stern-hates-the-spurs.ece

"That’s why David Stern hates the Spurs. I probably shouldn’t say that but he doesn’t like when the Spurs are in the finals because the ratings go down. People say that all the time. I don’t know how true it is but you hear stories all about that is that the ratings are down. Their basketball is the purest basketball you’re going to find, in my opinion, in the NBA, just watching them play. They play a nice pace game. They’re defense is solid. Their plays are solid. They get all their guys involved. That’s why when he sat them guys against the Heat and sent them home, they still almost won that game.”

i wonder how much kaman will be fined for that...

It's probably well-known/regularly talked about when NBA players get together about which teams get perennially shafted by Stern and the refs. It's amazing that Stern has made it so obvious over so many different circumstances, and yet hasn't been thrown out of his job. Dude is as crooked as American sports get, and will gladly throw a team under the bus in pursuit of the $$$. I'm aware that sports are about making money, but there is a lot of money to be lost if you destroy the integrity of the game. Stern has done everything in his power to disregard that integrity in his tenure. The Ewing pick, the rule changes, losing Seattle as a franchise in such an underhanded way, losing the Kings as a franchise TO Seattle (which IS a big deal, it's going to depress the economy in Sacramento), fines for smaller market teams/lesser players, Kings in 2002, Spurs vs Mavs in 06, Heat vs Mavs the same year, Spurs last year (check the Reddit thread, EVERY fan of EVERY other team and even some OKC fans were fucking ashamed/outraged at the calls in game 6), the Gasol collusion, endorsing those stupid power balance bracelets as "performance enhancements", openly stating that he wants to see LAL vs LAL in the finals every year... it's a miracle the NBA as a product hasn't completely tanked yet.

I've always despised the guy. He's too crooked for my tastes. I also hate how people defend him by saying "well before Stern, basketball was on tape delay." of course shit was different then, there was no cable, no internet, three channels. Getting anything on the air back then was much harder than now since there was less coverage/air time. I think the game would've been just fine with the better athletes (MJ was going to change the game regardless) and also the improvements in technology that make it easier to follow the game.

Stern has done some good things, but I think there could have been a number of candidates who could've improved the product and profitability without making the league seem fixed.

If ya ever listened to the Bill Simmons interview with Stern after the Spurs won the 07 Championship, Simmons kept hammering the point about the Spurs low ratings and how those numbers made Stern feel about the league (it was like Simmons was teasing Stern). A few months later and we see trades where the legendary Lakers/Celtics rivalry got conveniently re-ignited, and the ratings have been awesome ever since....

Exactly, that's the main thing I always bring up whenever people claim the Spurs get shitty ratings in the Finals. You have to look at who they were playing too. I'm not saying the Spurs are the biggest draw in the league, but I don't think they're exactly in the bottom half. I think they're top 10. Probably in the 6-10 area, but still. . .that doesn't exactly suck.

Spurs' opponents in the Finals:

1999: Knicks, and the Finals ratings were among the best since Jordan retired. Only less than a point worse than the 3 best rated finals. 0.8 worse than one, 0.3 and 0.2 worse than the other two. Very small difference.

2003: The Spurs beat the bandwagon Lakers team and faced the eastern conference team from New Jersey that was already in the Finals last year. Doomed to be bad ratings.

2005: Spurs again face the eastern conference team who was in the Finals the year before. And since the Spurs won the year before that, no one wanted to see it.

2007: Spurs faced the Cavs in an expectedly lopsided matchup. Worst rated because it was Cleveland, and the series was basically a squash match.

Notice how Lakers/Magic got shit ratings too. It's takes two to make a good Finals. Spurs did most of their work BEFORE the Finals (other than 2005). Can't really blame them for the eastern conference only fielding teams from places no one cares about, or teams that defaulted into the Finals since the east sucked.

Bet he gets a little gift basket courtesy of Pop, Buford, and Holt. Also bet he gets fined around $25-30k for that too.

It'd be awesome if Pop stepped up and offered to pay his fine.

I honestly don't know. temujin above knows more about the inner workings and he doesn't think so. I've heard Bill Simmons say he thinks Silver could be more responsive to the fans than Stern. All I want out of Silver is to make the league as balanced as possible, with better parity via the luxury tax and more objective officiating. It really shouldn't be that hard.

I think the ratings go down because the spurs don't get marketed the same way the lakers, heat, Boston, Knicks, Oklahoma, chicago and now Brooklyn do. The casual NBA fan wouldn't care to watch a spurs finals because it is shoved down their throat year round that the spurs "are old and boring" no matter how good they are.

Marion has said its difficult to win a game 5 on 8, after the Mavs played OKC. After all, Kaman is a Mav. I guess everyone noticed the WCF's were rigged in 2012. It was too blatant in game 5 and 6, the Spurs practically had no chance of making the finals.
