View Full Version : So Why No Outrage Over 233 Dead in Brazil??
If they were killed with an evil gun it would be all you heard about or read about for months. They die in a fire, no big deal. Just people trying to get out and have a good time, and they are Brazilians anyhow.
Odd that no one really gives a fuck about life, just about particular lives. SA210, where the fuck are you? Why aren't you complaining about piss poor fire codes and enforcement?

Surprised you aren't bitching about someone taking away your lighter or napalm thrower, tbh.

Nah, no one gives a fuck because there's no political points to be made. Also, I've never, not once, complained that someone is going to take my guns.

Uh huh. Count the number of foreign policy threads that are not SA210 drone youtubes on this forum and get back to me. I used to try and discuss NA, ME, CA, SEA, etc issues but people in general are just not interested. Your asserting cause without basis. You do that a lot.

You went on about a gun ban in Australia that happened decades ago based on a shooting that killed a fraction of the number of people killed in Brazil yesterday and yet you remained silent on this issue, now you are feeling guilty and I just exposed you. Feel a draft?

Did this have anything to do with the fact that Rio is built on an older city. I haven't looked into this, but I was talking to my dad yesterday and apparently the old city underneath Rio is somehow causing fireballs that are following the path of least resistance and blowing manholes out with fiery bursts.
It is still weird to me the idea of building a city ON TOP of another city. I just don't see how that works.

Most older cities are built on top of cities - Rome, Paris, London, etc.

I know that, I understand that it happens, it is just weird to me that buildings that were once on top of the ground are now under the ground. I am sure if I did some cursory research into it that it would all make sense, but I haven't so it is still unfathomable to me.

And even younger cities like Seattle and NYC. It most often happens in places that are prone to flooding.
As to the OP's point... what is it? If arson were responsible for as many intentional deaths as guns in this country, you might have a tenuous point; but it isn't, so it doesn't seem to me that you do.
Should theatrical pyrotechnics be more closely regulated in Brazil? Sure. When something like that happens in the States is there outrage? Yes, there is (remember the Great White club show that burned down a club that wasn't insulated up to code about 10 yrs ago?).

REd herring skirting the issue typical bullshit from you.
The point of my discussion was the effectiveness of the ban in relation to potential policies here in the states. Had there not been a link between the two countries then most people would not have been interested.
People by and large do not care about events outside of the US. That is the point here. That is why people do not care. If a fire like that happened here in the states then you would get a different reaction. As I said, you are misrepresenting cause and once again are skirting the issue rather than admit youre without a point.

They are pretty pissed off in Brazil. They arrested the club owners and the band that started the fire.

Except the club was 2x the max occupancy, no exit signs on doors and their fire inspection certification was expired. Then reports say guards wouldn't let people leave for whatever stupid reason.
Accident or intentional, a lot of people are dead and not one of you tree huggers even raised in eyebrow. I didn't even see a dead baby pic.

It is a tragedy and many people died neeedlessly because some idiot club owner and his staff thought it would be a good idea to lock a crowd in a room with a fireworks display. They should be charged with with murder along with the band and anyone else who assisted with the ill-conceived fireworks display.
Happy now?

Furthermore, there ought to be a world-wide ban on indoor fireworks. The same thing happened in Rhode Island about 10 years, and I believe dozens (if not hundreds) perished.

true tragedy but anyone ever wondered why it's often in a nightclub where massive people get killed in a fire? the gate keepers shut the door when people were trying to escape from the fire because they thought these people wanted to get out w/o paying. there was no explosion or shit so there should've been enough time to evacuate the crowd, but the motherfuckers left the door closed and the innocent people burnt. it's not the fire's fault and such tragedies could've been easily prevented tbh

hey DMC, do americans / US media get "outraged!" by school shootings outside of the US? maybe there is insufficient sample size to say definitively...
how about fires in the US? somehow i'm still "outraged!" enough to remember this old paper I read in college:
http://www.cafiresci.org/storage/papers/Davis1995.pdf
On the other hand, many of the 100-or-so recent fatalities
from tenement fires in the Westlake and Downtown areas might have
been prevented if slumlords had been held to minimal standards of
building safety. If enormous resources have been allocated-
quixotically-to fight irresistible forces of nature on the Malibu coast,
then scandalously little attention has been paid to the man-made and
remediable fire crisis of the inner city. As we shall see in some detail,
the political history of fire in Los Angeles is a faithful reflection of
larger class struggles.
do we need to confirm Mike Davis' outrage over the brazil fires before we can accept his outrage as valid?

In other news, several Brazilian's associated with the fire have been arrested and the story has been a top story on every commercial news agency in the states ever since it happened. I am not sure what 'outraged' is supposed to mean but it certainly has been brought to the forefront of American consciousness as it should be.

I think that the point of the thread is that DMC has turned into SA210 and is trying to scold us for caring too much about Americans relative to others. It seems that in DMC's case he is mistaking tribalism for something else.

I haven't said or even hinted that you should feel any certain way. I am only pointing out your hypocrisy. You would, no doubt, be all over this if those same people were killed by shooters. If you aren't in it for the lives saved, you're just in it for red vs blue talking points.
Pretty sure that's the driving force for most of you. At least I am honest enough to admit I wasn't surprised by it, but then I wasn't surprised by the shooting in Conn either other than the fact most were children.
