The 13-episode first season of House of Cards will be available on Netflix Instant Watch on February 1st. House of Cards is a political drama from David Fincher and Beau Willimon following the career of a ruthless politician played by Kevin Spacey. Additional cast members include Robin Wright and Kate Mara. The series is an adaptation of the BBC miniseries from the early 90's.
All 13-episodes will be released simultaneously on Feb 1st. This marks a huge leap into original programming for Netflix, and it's been estimated that they invested over $100 million in the first two seasons. Note that the second season is funded and already in production. Both Fincher and Willimon discussed in interviews how they're excited about a project with very little network interference and no week-by-week concerns over ratings. They likened the experience to creating a 13-hour movie. It's a different business model for television than what we're accustomed to, and many of us are excited to see how it all turns out.

Early reviews:
- NPR on House of Cards: 'House Of Cards' Is Built To Last (http://www.npr.org/2013/01/30/170584534/house-of-cards-is-built-to-last)Quote:
The way Spacey's Underwood manipulates the press is especially smart and credible. But all of House of Cards is intriguing and exciting: The first two episodes I previewed are so good and so addictive, I can't wait to see more.
- Onion A|V Club: House of Cards (http://www.avclub.com/articles/house-of-cards,91812/)Quote:
The first two episodes of House Of Cards certainly leave the viewer wanting more, but they also feel curiously undernourished, driven by scripts that leave too little to the imagination and treat the audience’s interest in antiheroes as a fait accompli. But so long as Fincher, Spacey, and Mara are at the show’s center, there’s enough here to entertain.
- Slate.com review: Bet you can’t watch just one (http://www.slate.com/articles/arts/television/2013/01/house_of_cards_starring_kevin_spacey_reviewed.html )
Quote:
Too jaded to lament the backroom maneuvering of politicians, the creators of House of Cards instead take that state of affairs as a given, tart it up, and fashion a wry piece of escapism—a backstabbing procedural delivered in a sophisticated style.
- Sepinwall: Kevin Spacey a force in Netflix's 'House of Cards' (http://www.hitfix.com/whats-alan-watching/review-kevin-spacey-a-force-in-netflixs-house-of-cards)Quote:
It’s entirely possible that, like many of the great cable dramas whose company “House of Cards” aims to join, the series will get significantly better as its first season moves along. And after I find the time to stream the rest of the season, I’ll be happy to let you know. But it’s a very promising start, at a minimum.
- Tim Goodman's review for THR: House of Cards (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/review/house-cards-netflix-tv-review-415589)Quote:
The Bottom Line: Kevin Spacey shines in this heavyweight new contender in the drama category that makes Netflix a major player as a content provider.
- TechCrunch Review: Netflix’s House Of Cards Could Be The Best Show You Won’t See On TV (http://techcrunch.com/2013/01/26/netflix-house-of-cards-best-show-you-wont-see-on-tv/)Quote:
If the first two episodes are any indication, Netflix’s bet on House of Cards should pay off handsomely. The show not only lives up to the production quality that we’ve come to expect from cable TV — in writing, acting, and directing — but it will probably surpass the expectations of many.
- The Times (UK) Review: House of Cards, Netflix (http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/arts/tv-radio/article3669935.ece)Quote:
The show may attract aficionados of American political dramas. But House of Cards does not hang on the rapid-fire dissection of policy such as in The West Wing, rather focusing on the tactical manoeuvrings that are the focus of The Ides of March. It is a cynical take on US politics, perhaps reflecting the dysfunctional political debate in Washington today. And it is gripping television regardless of what device you watch it on. 4 out of 5 stars.
- Poniewozik for Time Magazine: House of Cards Sinks Its Sharp Teeth into Washington (http://entertainment.time.com/2013/01/31/review-house-of-cards-sinks-its-sharp-teeth-into-washington/)Quote:
It is an ambitious series, a series about ambition and a series of ambitious purpose: to make Netflix (which is streaming the whole first season Feb. 1) a pop-culture destination the way The Sopranos did HBO and Mad Men did AMC. House of Cards, directed by David Fincher, is not as out-of the-box astonishing as those two, but it does arrive confident and polished (and showing every dime of its reported $100 million budget on the screen). It’s good reason at least to use your Netflix subscription, if not to rush out and get one.
- Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: 'House of Cards' comes to Netflix (http://communityvoices.sites.post-gazette.com/index.php/arts-entertainment-living/tuned-in-journal/35604-review-house-of-cards-comes-to-netflix)Quote:
The first two episodes establish "House of Cards" as a smart, astute political thriller/soap worthy of comparison to the shows that air on HBO and Showtime.
- SF Chronicle: 'House of Cards': Sexy political revenge (http://www.sfgate.com/tv/article/House-of-Cards-Sexy-political-revenge-4236277.php)Quote:
Netflix tested the original-content waters last year with "Lillyhammer," and now follows with the 13-episode first season of "House of Cards," a sassy, sexy and often just delicious political thriller starring Oscar winner Kevin Spacey as a modern-day Machiavelli, wheeling and dealing his way to power in Washington just so he can use that power to get more power.
- Philly.com: 'House of Cards' a first-class thriller available for streaming (http://www.philly.com/philly/entertainment/20130131__House_of_Cards__a_first-class_thriller_available_for_streaming.html)Quote:
With its first foray into original production, Netflix hits the bull's-eye resoundingly. House of Cards is a fascinating, first-class political thriller starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright.
- Grantland: House of Cards Preview: Kevin Spacey and Netflix Get Ready to Feed Binge-Watchers 13 Episodes of Political Intrigue (http://www.grantland.com/blog/hollywood-prospectus/post/_/id/66991/house-of-cards-preview-kevin-spacey-and-netflix-get-ready-to-feed-binge-watchers-13-episodes-of-political-intrigue)Quote:
The production is gorgeous, the performances pristine. Nothing feels out of place, but nothing feels particularly vibrant, either. It’s the sort of unflappable cool we see reflected in Frank Underwood, whether he's licking barbecue sauce from his fingers or dabbling with treason.

Saw the first ep. Very ambitious show by the look of it.
Too much 4th wall breaking though. It detracts from the story in my opinion.

I dunno, it doesn't seem overmuch, and I actually kinda like it. Though I have a Spacey bias, and his delivery does do a lot for making it work. Either way, I'm 4 ep's in, and loving it so far.

Netflix is like a premium channel. Dont sleep on them. Their production is on par with that of HBO which btw Netflix is looking to get a hand on.
Also Spacey was a producer on HOC.

Making the switch from film to television is no longer the kiss of death for actors' careers, and hasn't been for years. The money/production value has skyrocketed in recent years.
Kevin Bacon is probably upset that he can't flash his junk on Fox though.

I don't agree. Kevin Spacey took on the job as artistic director at the Old Vic Theater in London, that actually required him to make a 10 year commitment. I think we haven't seen him around because he actually has a job. I think he must be having some success there because the Queen gave him an Honorary Knighthood or something.
Now as far as Kevin Bacon goes, dude makes my skin crawl. Totally creeps me out.

He would be too powerful as the commander in chief. Doesn't help the show since that's how his character gets his jmmies off. It'd be too easy.

Kevin is a fucking boss. His conversation with the camera is great, adds an element that keeps the show fresh imo. You never know when he's going to talk to you. I think she does but is also more afraid of him now more than she had been before.
SPOILERS for episode 3 ahead..
For instance when they were remodeling their house and Francis was on his laptop and she comes in, he says something about his office being the only quiet place he could work and she immedialtely said that they could make it bigger or whatever. Like she was saying all he wanted to hear. When she walked out she had this "oh shit I came out alive" face.

I FFWD through that shit, don't give a fuck what they talk about. It's just the obligatory queer stuff every series does to gain that sector of the viewers.
Doug and the hoe has easily been the worst subplot of the show tbh. It hasn't advanced or told us anything important in a while :cry read me a book pls :cry
Reminds me of the Sopranos season where the faggot capo was getting banged by some sweaty faggot. I skipped that shit but watched as he got his ass plunged by the cue.
Yeah that whole book reading thing was just weird and stupid. Is Doug supposed to have mommy issues or something?
The character I hope gets killed off next is the hacker guy.
Dude looks like he's about to cry all the time. Funny too how writers think hackers have to have 3 large monitors to hack a website. Also amusing how easy the "backweb" was to access.
That shit was unecessary tbh like last season when him and his fag college scro relived their gay glory days
lol bicurious potus
Also I wish that bbq nigga Freddy didn't get fucked over tbh
It's cookie cutter portrayal of evil to have a bisexual character, portrayed as having a lack of moral fiber and no intimacy with his wife. It's worn out. If he was strictly Gay, he'd be jovial and quirky. If he's straight, he's just a pussy hound and probably a conservative.

**********Spoiler Alert**********Yeah, the Social Service Sex-team up was odd. The ease at which they swept through impeachment was meh...and Stamper getting all butthurt because Rachel was banging the shit out of someone's roast beef curtains was soooo middling that it killed a boring plotline. However, this show is great enough that it was warrant burning through the whole season in a weekend. I was drunk for most of it so I may have to revisit season 2. Also the Remy and Jackie plotline was hole-filled and lame, too. But it was still a good season.

it's like it was just placed there for the explicit purpose of making sure he's not a lobbyist in season 3. Yeah, and like what is he going to be in episode 3? The new Chief of Staff for President Underwood? I mean, he'd probably do a better job than Stamper did and wouldn't hesitate to take out Rachel but then that would be the easy bend to the plotline--there'd be no thought to it. Also, kinda sucks for Freddy and Son...well, not his son because he was D.C. scum but the father seemed to have changed his life around. Maybe he becomes the personal chef to Frances and Claire U.

Yeah, like all of a sudden Freddy gave a fuck about his low life son. I know he had the feels for the grandson, but they could've worked that line in slowly and perhaps have Frank solicit some advice from Freddy that was not kosher. I mean, that's the only thing that really adds up is if he comes back to haunt Frank as testimony as to his unsavory ways.

Spoilers spoilers spoilers I'm basically giving away what happens in season 2 beware
I did a back to back to back binge fest of the last 3 episodes and that tag team by Meachem and Frank on Claire was just not necessary. I mean it just came off as something to attract gay viewers or something. Nothing had ever been mentioned that Frank liked dick and pussy. I was under the impression that he liked pussy. He definitely liked Zoe's pussy in season 1. And the vibe that I got with Meachem and Frank was that it was a father and son type of thing not some crazy orgy shit. If there was going to be some type of kinky shit, I would have preferred to seen Jackie and The First Lady in bed. Anyways, I liked season 2. I felt bad for President Walker. He got played big time by Frank. He let Frank fuck up his life, reputation, name, and family. Wikipedia said that Doug was killed by Rachel. Any confirmation of that?

This season wasn't that great. Seemed to drag on, like the middle to last songs of an LP. Has become predictable. Not staying consistent with Underwoods' character flaws (both Underwoods). Theme is repetitive, every person they meet is/was a prostitute, opens up to them. Unlikely events snare people who should know better by now. Whitehouse seems lackluster, no one wants to be there. Where is Marine One?

I didn't care for how Jackie suddenly grows a conscience, she was a cold bitch before and that's how I liked it. Same is true for Remy, he's supposed to be inside connection guy yet the police don't know who the fucking Chief of Staff is at the Whitehouse, a black cop doesn't know a black Chief of Staff? Finished the season last night and here are my thoughts on it..
Enjoyed it as a whole but this season was the series weakest by a few points. Too much time spent with Doug Stamper and to be honest, I forgot all about that plot with the girl. Why did he needed to get her out of the way or kill her again? That's something that went over my head like a flying disc.
The last episode was very anti-climatic. There was no real surprises or shocking moments that left you wanting to know what happens next. The season finale felt like just a random episode.

He did go over the edge but only in his obsession with her. Eventually he did what he should have done from the start. I'm not real fond of the dichotomy the writers try to play with each character's personas as if we need to see that a murdering piece of shit has a soft heart at times. Just leave him as a murdering piece of shit and move forward. There's no way to redeem these characters but it seems like the show is trying to, and it will all be just to have that card yanked out from under it all at the end and they will be shown going to prison while the ex-Pres will be pardoned by the next that he colluded with to get into office. It's not even up for debate at this time.

Now that season 6 is postponed, there really is no part in watching the series all the way through. Agreed, once Debra found out they needed to start wrapping the show up. Two full seasons of her having emotional meltdowns because her brothers a serial killer was too much.
The big difference here imo is that the Dexter ending was overthought and this entire season of House of Cards seemed sloppily put together.

yeah season 7 (dealing with Deb finding out, Isaac Sirko, etc) was the only good season after S4 (trinity). season 5 (jordan chase), 6 (doomsday), and 8 (whatever the fuck that was supposed do be) were all awful and the ending was a ridiculous copout

Everyone I knew who watched the show was expecting a binary outcome at the end where Dexter is either dead/in prison or where he’s figured out how to live a happy life and not kill people and would have been OK with either one. The writers for the show tried to thread the needle by having a ltitle bit of both and failed horribly.

Should have ended with him giving up that life, moving to Argentina, and last scene is him seeing that Harrison just killed 3 dogs or something
Wow this last season had it all, lazy acting, bad acting, bad writing, shitty plot and that ending :lmao
Strong cast who were only in it for the money as every single one of them clearly didn't give a shit about even acting halfway serious. it got bad when even Doug started breaking the 4th wall. That honestly cracked me up.

I didn’t think the plot about Frank secretly being owned by a family of oligarchs was that bad, but everything else being shitty gave it no chance at working :lol
The scene where Robin Wright is crying incessantly and then turns to the camera to say she has a plan was the low point for me.

Yeah. Just awful. I should have stopped when she grabbed the bird that flew out of the hole she made in the wall
