History Foundation Creation of Russia Today was a part of larger effort by the Kremlin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kremlin) intended to improve the image of Russia abroad.[16] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT_%28TV_network%29#cite_note-ForeignPolicy-16) RT was conceived by former media minister Mikhail Lesin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikhail_Lesin),[17] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT_%28TV_network%29#cite_note-Osborn-17) and Vladimir Putin’s press spokesperson Aleksei Gromov[18] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT_%28TV_network%29#cite_note-18) At the time of RT’s founding RIA Novosti (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RIA_Novosti) director Svetlana Mironyuk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svetlana_Mironyuk) stated: "Unfortunately, at the level of mass consciousness in the West, Russia is associated with three words: communism, snow and poverty," and added "We would like to present a more complete picture of life in our country."[17] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT_%28TV_network%29#cite_note-Osborn-17)
In 2005 RIA Novosti helped establish "ANO TV-Novosti", (Autonomous Non-profit Organization (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nonprofit_organization#Russia) TV-News) - The parent organization of RT TV. ANO TV-Novosti General director (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_director) (CEO) position was filled by Mr. Sergey Frolov[19] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT_%28TV_network%29#cite_note-19) Frolov described: "A main problem in the beginning was that in our country we've never broadcasted English-language television. When it began Russia Today had a certain lack of personnel: it seems hard to find qualified journalists, political scientists, economists, analysts, with good English skills in Moscow."[20] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT_%28TV_network%29#cite_note-translate.google.com-20)
RT started broadcasting as "Russia Today" on 10 December 2005, initially with 300 journalists, including approximately 70 from outside Russia.[16] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT_%28TV_network%29#cite_note-ForeignPolicy-16) Russia Today’s editor-in-chief position was filled by Margarita Simonyan (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margarita_Simonyan) who recruited foreign journalists as presenters and consultants.[17] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT_%28TV_network%29#cite_note-Osborn-17) She said the channel’s intent was to have a "professional format" like the BBC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBC), CNN (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CNN) and Euronews (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euronews) that would "reflect Russia's opinion of the world" and present a "more balanced picture" of Russia.[21] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT_%28TV_network%29#cite_note-RNannounce-21)

Simonyan was a reportedly well-connected former Kremlin pool reporter, only 25 years old, who had been working in journalism since she was 18. She told the New York Times that after the fall of the Soviet Union many new young journalists were hired, thus the youth of most of the staffers.[22] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT_%28TV_network%29#cite_note-Heyman-22) Journalist Danny Schechter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_Schechter), who has been a guest on RT,[23] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT_%28TV_network%29#cite_note-23) has stated that having been part of the start-up team for CNN, he saw RT as another “channel of young people who are inexperienced, but very enthusiastic about what they are doing."[24] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT_%28TV_network%29#cite_note-Walker-24) Shortly after the channel was launched, James Painter wrote that Russia Today and similar stations like France 24 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/France_24) and TeleSUR (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TeleSUR) saw themselves as “counter-hegemonic”, offering a differing vision and news content from that of Western media like CNN (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CNN) and the BBC[25] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT_%28TV_network%29#cite_note-Painter-25)

While true that they will show some things our media won't (which is good in some cases), it's still an arm of the Kremlin with a blatant agenda.

I don't watch cable news very often on principle, but RT seems to be better than CNN/MSNBC/FOX when they're not spewing conspiracy theories, tbh....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT_%28TV_network%29 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT_%28TV_network%29) I know it's hard to believe anyone who criticizes Obama so much could have an ulterior purpose, but I guess you're right: the Kremlin wouldn't lie to you.

They are biased against the United States. They invite American and other Western experts, but these "experts" sound short of leftist.

fuck them commies. Al-Jazeera is a better news outlet than this piece of shit RT.
