When you look at the two spurs that Pop has had the most 'developmental' impact on, they have to be Duncan and Parker, and both of their careers would argue that Pop really knows how to develop talent.

Well done, TP!

Spurs POTM Award Recipients:

David Robinson four times (January 1991, February 1994, March 1995, March 1996)

Tim Duncan three times (March 1999, December 2001, April 2002)

George Gervin one time (January 1980)

Alvin Robertson one time (December 1985)

and now

Tony Parker one time (January 2013)

Notes: POTM began in 1980 so it wasn't available for Gervin to win his entire career. They split the award into Eastern Conference and Western Conference in 2002, so that means two of Duncan's were sole POTM and all four of Robinson's were sole POTM.

And prepare to sprain your eyeballs as you roll your eyes into the back of your brain when considering this .... The Spurs were long overdue for this award. Since the last time a player from the Spurs won a POTM award, Kobe Bryant had won it 12 times. Yes T-W-E-L-V-E times. That's just laughable.

Props to TP, great job :tu

The voters likely look at a chart. It's possible they just pull up the scoring numbers for the month. Kobe will get it next month for his new-found passing abilities, whether or not the Lakers are above .500 while he does it.

(http://t.co/bsJHwOv5)It must really hurt all the Parker haters and critics to see him play so well and be so respected by coaches that he makes the All-Star roster in a Western Conference that has so many fine PGs that were left off.

Is that what he did against the Thunder in the playoffs last year? I'm sorry that I hold him to a higher standard and that regular season awards mean jack at this point.

I won't think Tony is underrated until he carries this team as far as it can go and doesn't get turned into a wholly ineffective player over a span of multiple games.

Gee, I don't know, let's see:

Parker's WCF stats: 21.5 ppg, 6.3 assists, 3.8 rebounds, 3.0 TOs, 1 steal, on 48.1% shooting.

Refsbrook: 18.2 ppg, 7.3 assists, 5.8 rebounds, 3.3 TOs, 1.5 steals, on 37.8% shooting.

Well that makes perfect sense. MVP voting ranks TP against other players in the NBA. timvp's grades rate TP's performance against an optimal version of TP.

will_spurs
02-08-2013, 12:27 PM
It does not make perfect sense at all, because the 13 remaining points don't exist. He'd have to average 40 points, 15 assists, 7 rebounds, 3 steals on 70% shooting and be unrelenting on offense and never make a mistake on defense just to reach 95, at this stage.

That, or you're telling me Lebron would average 90 on the same scale (which would be equally ridiculous).

This. Parker has had good regular seasons in the past. He needs to put together a complete post season run and be able to handle long defenders, switches on the pick and roll, and teams packing the paint.

How about an example of a PG in the last 20 years who has done all of those things on his way to a championship.

88, tbh.

It's forgotten now but TP had a relatively slow start to the season. Early on, Duncan was carrying the team. It wasn't until that game against the Celtics on the road did Parker start playing extremely well.

Parker has been 94+ in his recent stretch of awesomeness and 90+ since he caught fire.

Tony Parker's January
33.3 Minutes Per Game
21.9 Points Per Game
2.5 Rebounds Per Game
7.9 Assists Per Game
.563 Field Goal Percentage
.353 Three-Point Field Goal Percentage
.779 Free Throw Percentage

The Spurs go 12-3 despite Duncan and Ginobili missing four games and Pop missing three games.

It's the assists and 3-point percentage that really stand out to me. It just shows the massive improvement that he's made in his game - he went from being a below-average distributor with limited to range to a great distributor with decent range.

Props Tony!

8.8 assists per game

It's weird how Parker turned into a beast this season as soon as he started wearing his Peak shoes.

Parker with Peak:
15 games
34.5 minutes per game
24.6 points per game (.579 FG%, .417 3P%, .833 FT%)
8.8 assists per game

:lol good catch

Wow.. Thanks for pointing that out :toast

It must be the shoes...

How about an example of a PG in the last 20 years who has done all of those things on his way to a championship.

Chauncey Billups. And Parker is more athletic than him.

February: 27.9 pts, 9.1 asts, 57.6 %. Three games left in Feb..

It'll be tight between him and Lebron after that year Lebron went on before the all star break.

Each conference has a POTM.

Durant is averaging "only" 25.5 points this month so he's out.

Parker's main competition is probably James Harden who is averaging 30, 7 and 7 this month.

Oops. Forgot that. I see no reason why Parker won't get I knowing the injury factor.

I was going to mention Harden when I saw the thread had been resurrected. He's had an amazing month too, and his 46 pts the other night against the Thunder garnered a lot of attention. For the month: 30.4P / 7.6R / 7.3A / 56.5% FG, team record 5-3, 3 games to go in February.

I don't think TP's destruction of "the best PG in the NBA" will go unnoticed either.

probably going to harden tbh but tp month of February is likely the best stretches of games of his career.

Nope. I wouldn't want to put money on which one will win.

Remaining games with NBA defensive rank in parentheses:

Harden: Brooklyn(16), Washington(5), and Milwaukee(10).

Parker: Golden State(20), Phoenix(23), and Phoenix(23).

Tony's biggest problem may be blowouts that hold down his totals.

Now I'm becoming exigent and I expect a TP clinic on Curry even if I'm a big fan of the kid :lol

The main thing going against Parker isn't Harden so much as it is having already won it last month.

Well, considering that Kobe has "won" that award 16 times, repeating shouldn't penalize. Then again, that could be a Kobe only rule.

Play of the Month Awards
Kobe Bryant: 16
The Entire San Antonio Spurs Organization Combined: 10

The team record is really important. If the Spurs win the last 3 games (Warriors + Suns x2), they will be 10-1 in February with 9 road games and with Tim, Manu, Jack and Kawhi missing a lot of games... That will be a no brainer for Parker.

spurs 2 loses, Houston 4
and the spurs play almost all the game on the road
TP 26.6 55% 8.4 ass, 4 reb 1 stl for 8 games 6 W 2 L
Harden 29,1 53.9 6.8as 6.9 reb 1 stl for 9 games 5 W 4 L
for me TP got the award (Durant had a better statistic month in january)

right now both conferences CotM have been announced, and LeBron is mentioned on twitter as ECPotM, must be a tough decision for the West because no rumors/names mentioned.

I don't think Parker should or will get him. Between injuries, not so great games and a couple of losses, he hasn't ended well the month.

Harden or Westbrook should get it.

tbf, maybe they saw Parker go 0-2 in his last two games of the month (and missed two games altogether - out of 11) while Bryant played in all 13 Lakers games this month.
