Tim Duncan Injury Report
Feb. 3, 2013

SAN ANTONIO - Spurs forward Tim Duncan underwent an MRI today on his left knee in San Antonio. The exam showed no structural damage. The injury occurred during the second quarter of last night's game vs. Washington. At the same time he suffered a mild right ankle sprain. Duncan is listed as day-to-day with a sore left knee.

I'd just hold Tim Duncan out until after the All-Star Break. That'd give him a 17-day break between games. I know there's no structural damage but you gotta think a knee bending like that would make it more susceptible to injury in the short-term.

Let him rest that thing, try to get out of the All-Star weekend and then begin the second half push after the break. IMO, at least.

Time to retire that brace's serial number.

I know it was a fluke injury but pop should rest him one game of any B2B for the rest of the season.

Stern was pissed off for the miami game because it was on national tv and there was 4 players including "young" and healthy players in Parker and Green
Pop should be allowed to rest Duncan and Ginobili whenever he want if it's only them considering their age / injuries

i've heard they are restrictive. i'm sure that applies to even the highest quality braces. i'm thinkin of getting a brace or 2 for my hoopin. on a no flash team like the spurs, why not braces for every big? team mandate?

this is even more of a blessing in that it's an opportunity for baynes to get more minutes if his injury is minor. i still think blair is too short ineffective against real bigs. let the trade speculation continue...

I'd agree with you, except for the fact that I want all those Warriors fans on Twitter whose first reaction to the potentially ?devastating? injury (thankfully not) was to be happy that it freed up a spot for Curry in the All Star Game. Curry's been great, but the West is simply just too deep this year.

Can hold on there. I think the Spurs only really have to worry about the Nets and Bulls.

But the Nets are historically an easy RRT opponent, and the Spurs' best winning percentage on the RRT is on the third game.

Awesome news! Just got home to see it, big relief.

Also, good to see people recognizing the role that brace played in keeping Timmy's knee safe. I mentioned in the game thread it probably saved him right after seeing him walk on his own power to the locker room. Guess that makes me the founding member of the CoB. ;)

Can hold on there. I think the Spurs only really have to worry about the Nets and Bulls.

But the Nets are historically an easy RRT opponent, and the Spurs' best winning percentage on the RRT is on the third game.
Correlation does not imply causation.

So much for tanking

Not sure if serious, but the baseline for making the playoffs is like 48 wins, and the Spurs have already won 38. Even without Duncan it would be really hard to only go 10-23 the rest of the way. There was never going to be a lottery pick coming out of this.

Or, the knee BRACE actually did it's job... :lol

Tim's pretty flexible. It's good that he has long arms because he was able to place his left hand down to alleviate the buckling of his knee. The angle looks crazy but with that brace on, the force isn't on the knee directly but on his thigh and calf areas along with the knee, that spreads out the force. His ankle must be thinking he was swimming with flippers again but he didn't hobble off with his right foot either. I think we all are extremely lucky and there is plenty of time for Tim to get healthy on the drive for 5.

But for everybody who is talking about that Punisher knee brace - he is definitely not wearing that huge brace during the game and puts a soft one over it. If he really has something under the soft brace, it has to be a smaller ... the Punisher brace is huge and putting something over that would look pretty ridicolous ...

WRONG-If he was only wearing a soft brace, then this would be a thread about Tim possibly retiring. A soft brace, no way in hell, could have prevented the force from tearing ligaments in his knee. It's custom fitted. You can see it here. Examine the pic and then tell us how ridiculous it is to think that his knee could survive the forces at play without a custom-fitted carbon fiber and metal brace in play.

This.

Duncan grew up as a swimmer.
The downside of swimmers is they can't jump. The upside is theis muscle and ligaments are more flexible.
That has probably more to do with the flexibility of his ligaments than the brace, in my opinion.

Yeah, the one in this thread with the flames on seems a bit lighter/skinnier to me and I think he wears this one. But all the others here swear on the Punisher brace ... :lol

They are the same exact brace with different paint jobs, no more, no less. Why Spurs fans want to argue about how bulky a brace is or how it works is beyond me? It's made of Carbon-Fiber or lightweight structural aluminum.
The goals for a brace like this are as follows:
Maximum activity
Delay surgery
Decrease anti-inflammatory medications
Decrease pain symptoms associated with ACL/PCL injuries
Improve joint function
Ultimate protection The brace did it's job.

My wife, Woman In Black, has the same one, it's custom made precisely to what the orthopedic surgeon and her require in terms of fit, support, and comfortability.
I'm sure it's the same for Tim.
Woman In Black wears it for snowboarding. A brace like this will cost a minimum of $500 so make sure that your insurance will cover it since it's custom made.

Tim has 2 of the exact braces-

The Punisher Design we know of.
The other one, well...It was tweeted out by Ric Bucher:
Tim Duncan switches out left knee brace. 1st choice has sweet eagle made out of flames (V.I. symbol) and a Virgin Island flag on it.

Impossible to know whether the brace prevented a more serious injury, or if it did anything at all. Seems to me it didn't help much. What's the point of a brace if it allows that much unnatural displacement?
It's really quite possible that it prevented a serious injury. Without it, this board takes on a different tone entirely. Reality, the brace is there for 2 reasons, to provide structural support and protection. Since it's anchor points are the thigh and the calf, the force gets spread out over a wider area. He could get bruising where the straps are but I'm sure that he'll take that everyday over having the knee and the knee alone, absorb the force and ANGLE of the blow. At that angle, you have to be GUMBY to not walk out with at least a tear of the MCL. That's why he wears the brace and the only reason he wears it.

i thought it will be only sprained knee at worst cause usually when it's a torn ligament it's on non contact plays when the knee just give up for no apparent reason(i would say maybe could happened when there is a lot of burden(load of the season) on someone player, or when a player is not in shape).
Torn ligaments can happen even more so on a contact play. Your knee is not meant to move sideways. If your leg is planted and someone hits you from the side, or if you are say skiing, and your ski goes right, when you wanted to go left and leaned your body that way, all of that can cause a ligament stretch/tear.
