View Full Version : Injury Update 2/4 - Duncan (knee, ankle), Ginobili (hamstring) and Baynes (niggle)

-Tim Duncan got up some shots in practice today. He didn't go full force but he was out there working up a sweat. He's still day-to-day but Duncan isn't expected to play on Wednesday. According to Tony Parker (thanks to Bruno), Duncan could possibly be back Feb. 10 at Brooklyn.

-Manu Ginobili is being listed by the Spurs as doubtful for Wednesday with a tight hamstring. Ginobili also didn't go full force in practice. The good news is that Parker says he may only have to miss one game. That would put his return as Feb. 8 in Detroit.

-It appeared like Aron Baynes got injured during his second game with the Toros. As it turns out, that looks to be not the case. Baynes says he didn't get injured, rather he suffered a "niggle". Not sure what that is but I'm sure our Australian brethren can translate. Anyways, Baynes says he's good to go.

Wow that's awesome news about Tim. No one could have felt that way after watching that game. Was there at the game and it got very very quiet. It wasn't only the players who had trouble focusing on the game, the fans did too. Great news that he won't be out too long.

gonna be interesting watching Baynes against Pekovic. Dude is a big bruiser.

Watching the replay... and seeing Baynes trying to walk off the discomfort... it might be he simply sustained a shot to the 'man area'...

Maybe one of our New Zelanders can confirm if that's what Aron meant by a "niggle"...

Good news we are facing Minny and Detroit coming up.

Those two teams just lost to the Lakers. I'm pretty sure we can beat them half-staffed.

I seriously hope our luck holds through the rest of the season. We've been dodging bullets left and right Neo-style.

Bye, bye, buddy: After playing for weeks with his fractured right pinkie finger taped to the ring finger, Jackson practiced Monday with only the right pinkie taped.

“Today was the first day I didn’t have the buddy tape,” he said. “I got it X-rayed this morning. It’s still broken, but it’s going to be like that for a couple more months.

“They told me I could try one (finger) taped. I still have to tape it for the rest of the season, but they let me try it and it felt good today. We’ll see about playing like this, though.”

It's obvious that tape has affected his shot greatly; it'll be great once he gets that crap off.

Good news all around! :tu The next two games are winnable without Timmy and Manu. The Brooklyn game is where it may get a little tougher because of the bigs they have with Lopez and Evans. The next night as well against the Bulls with Noah, Boozer, and Gibson. I wouldn't rush Timmy back but if the coaching staff and trainers think he'll be good to go by then it's fine with me...

A stinger in the US is very serious is it not? Related to spine injuries?

A niggle is like having stiff joints. It's irritating, you aren't 100% but no reason not to play

As far as I know, a "stinger" is usually caused by a pinched nerve.

I've never had one, but a friend of mine was describing it just yesterday. He had one when he used to play football, and described it as "someone dragging a knife down your spine". It sounds incredible painful and temporarily debilitating....but it wears off eventually, and usually doesn't equate to anything too serious.

Stinger is usually when you get hit, a nerve compresses, and it burns or stings like hell. Sometimes it gets very numb. Totally uncomfortable.

It can be serious, but usually is not.

whoops, I'm late...

How much have you traveled internationally? Foreigners might have a bit of a jump on some of us because they watch our movies and tv shows, but still the only way to be familiar with a dialect is if you get to experience it first hand, and the kind of ignorance you describe is found all over the world. Because it's natural to be 'ignorant' of something you've never been exposed to.

It's actually more 'ignorant' to expect people removed hundreds or thousands of miles from where you live to be familiar with everything you're familiar with, because well you know it, so doesn't everybody?

I haven't traveled much but I still try to learn as much about other cultures as possible. Most Americans that I've met, especially those removed from coastlines, care little to nothing and know little to nothing about other countries/continents.

Because it's natural to be 'ignorant' of something you've never been exposed to.

The internet exists. Therefore, the only reason for not being exposed to something is not seeking that knowledge.

And stating that in my experience Americans do not know about other cultures is not passing judgment, it is merely sharing anecdotal information that I've personally found to be true. It wasn't meant as a put down.

@CH It's cool man. It's just a universal rule of thumb that people's ignorance of a thing increases by the distance they're removed from it. In my experience Americans are not unique in this regard. (Even though for a while we've been the punchline of the world's running dumb joke)

My question is, is a nagging injury a niggle that refuses to go away? I like the idea that "niggle" is present tense, while "nagging" (in this context) is present perfect tense. Though most likely they do not share a common etymology. :blah

In my experience, you can't generalize about 300 million people, including those of us far away from any coastline.

In my running circles (in the U.S.), it is perfectly normal to refer to a minor, nagging, but not really limiting physical ailment as a niggle. Runners have them all the time.

Why yes, yes in fact you can. Large populations are actually the only group of people you can generalize about. Sociological studies are performed to gain latitudinal data about said groups of people. It is dangerous to use that data to infer reasoning, i.e., Texans are heavier than most Americans because they are lazy. It is accurate to state the former quote without the italics, but it is incorrect to equate that with causation.

Shit. Why hasn't his finger healed yet? Surely a break doesn't take this long.
Broken fingers can take up to 6-8 weeks and that's not while playing. He's playing, so he heals slower, he is still getting hit, having the ball hit that finger. Plus it's a joint and joints, in general, have poor blood supply.
He can elect to do surgery after the season but most athletes just grin and bear it. My pinky finger is jacked up because of hoops. It no longer goes straight at the 1st knuckle. Oh well, at least, I have an entire pinky, bent but still all mine. Ronnie Lott cut the tip of his finger off because if he was given time to heal the bone grafts, it would have not made him ready in time for the 86 season, so...off it went.
