How many guys are you expecting the staff to take this year?

Texas is losing at least 15 to their last year of eligibility at the end of the 2013 season. The staff can sign 20 prospects comfortably in 2014 and I think they'll go higher than that. It will be interesting to see how generous UT is with offers at the Junior Day on Sunday.

With Texas taking absolutely zero DL in 2013, look for them to push hard for these 2014 guys:

DT, D.J Williams, Lufkin
DT, Zaycoven Henderson, Longview
DT, Cedric Johnson, Rowlett
DT, DeShawn Washington, Nederland
DT, Garrald McDowell, Covington (Covington, LA)
DE, Solomon Thomas, Coppell
DE, Jake McMillon, Abilene
DE, Jarrett Johnson, Katy Seven Lakes
DE, Duncan Douglas, Lubbock Coronado
DE, Myles Garrett, Arlington Martin

I wouldn't be supprised if Texas takes up to 6 lineman in this class.
We already have one on board with the verbal commit of DE, Derick Roberson.

How do you guys think this class would look position wise?

1 QB (Jerrod Heard)
2-3 RB/FB's (Daniel Gresham (FB) & Donald Catalon)
3 WR's (Lorenzo Joe & Roderick Bernard)
1 TE
3 OL's (Demetrius Knox)
2 DE's (Derick Roberson)
1 JUCO DE
1 JUCO DT
2 DT's
2-3 LB's
5-6 DB's

Which would be in the area of 23 to 26 guys, which I believe seems about right size wise. Maybe a bit too big class?

Last time I'll mention DT A'Shawn Robinson on here, but I wanted to relay this story that I read on OrangeBloods this morning. Turns out Robinson already had his mind made up on Alabama before Bo Davis arrived for his in-home visit last Saturday morning. Texas was dead in the water but Robinson and his mother actually had the balls (or ignorance) to ask Davis for help on filling out his Alabama scholarship paperwork so he could have everything ready for National Signing Day. That's basically the last contact Texas had.

Not a bad breakdown. I think 22 to 23 guys is a good number to focus on for now. Obviously a lot can change in a year and 2013 could be significant in many ways if Mack and Dodds are on the way out.

24/7 saying LB James David of Rockdale will come in if he finds transportation. I'm a big fan of this guy but I don't know if Texas will go hard after him because of his size and the need for rangy LBs in the Big XII who can play in coverage most of the time. I also don't know if his transcript will check out. Check his film out if you have time. He's #47 on the list above.

Just in case anyone is wondering, the prospects with "NR" next to their name just means "not ranked." A lot of those guys should be ranked and will be later on in the year. "OOS" is all of the out-of-state prospects that Texas is looking at.

Is this guy related in anyway with 2012 big time prospect Derek David of Rockdale? I remember that everyone in the world wanted this guy and then he ended up in trouble with the law or something. Just curious??

DT in the State of Texas this year is pretty dang weak. Texas missing out in 2013 is really going to hurt them. (lol Mack's comments).

A&M had Gerald Willis III from LA come to their first junior day but he's pretty much a very strong LSU lean from what I can see. Rivals shows Texas offering. This kid is an absolute stud but I don't know how much contact Texas has had. Going out of the state for this position looks like the route this year.

Texas really needs to hang on Heard, Catalon and Roberson. I agree with Cannon, Thomas and they need to wrap up four to five quality DBs. I like where they sit with D. Johnson, Watkins and Adams. Garrett isn't really interested in Texas and he's currently looking at A&M (his sister is there) and TCU. He has high school teammates at TCU so I wouldn't discount them in his recruitment. UT would do themselves a favor if they can wrap up DT DeShawn Washington of Nederland early. He's a big-time sleeper, imo. DT Zaycoven Henderson's stock is rising as well and he's already been offered by OU. I also like LB Otaro Alaka of Cypress Falls.

Correct. The elder David got involved with drugs and was accused of sexual assualt. I'm not sure he would've qualified even if he didn't get in trouble. I kind of feel sorry for James because he may have his older brother's troubles hanging over his head. And like I said above, I don't know how Texas will treat his recruitment because of their need for speedy LBs in the Big XII unless, of course, they talk to him about putting his hand on the ground.

Thanks T-Floss. Any visitors this weekend expected to commit on the spot?

No problem.

I'm not expecting any fireworks since Mack will probably do his usual thing of telling kids to go home and think things over. I know that Inside Texas has reported the past few weeks that Giles is working the recruitment of CB Darrion Johnson of Brenham pretty hard. I think OL Connor Mayes of Van Alstyne is a candidate for a commitment if he's offered, but I haven't seen any reports that Texas is in a rush to offer additional OLs right now. They signed a really good class in 2013 and it hurts Mayes' chances that he's an interior guy with Knox already in the mix and Cuney being a heavy Texas lean. They need true tackles. DE Jarrett Johnson of Katy Seven Lakes is a lesser-known guy that could jump at an offer if he shows up and the same goes for WR Willy Ivery of Sulphur Springs. I've seen him slotted for either date so we'll have to wait and see who all attends on Sunday.

My guess is that Texas will do a lot of research of the DT's in state this year and it seems like DeShawn Washington and Zaycoven Henderson will be the top prospects, in state. But what is you guys opinion on Mychealon Thomas of Dallas Skyline? I came across his tape and left pretty impressed with his play. Do any of you guys have an opinion on him?

I think that this might be the best way to go since OOS is not working for Mack. One of the parts that disapointed me the most this year was the staff's inability to land players that they had connections within SEC country. The more time they spend at UT, the weaker their ties are with OOS kids. I understand the philosophy on keeping the in-state kids, but they have got to be able to cherry pick from other states (see tOSU, ou and even atm this year).

Also some potentially great news from 24/7. ATH Nick Harvey (currently committed to A&M) may be in Austin this weekend for the first Junior Day. The best part about this news is he was the one who reached out to Texas. For those that don't know, Harvey has transferred from Lancaster to Fort Bend Bush and Larry Porter will be his area recruiter. Positive development for UT if they can get him in town.

Just in case anyone is wondering, the prospects with "NR" next to their name just means "not ranked." A lot of those guys should be ranked and will be later on in the year. "OOS" is all of the out-of-state prospects that Texas is looking at. I remember that this time last yr most of us didnt know who Deoundrei Davis and Daeshon Hall were. So there are a bunch of 4 stars in that group of visitors, we just dont know who they are right now.

Two quick notes on prospects that we talked a little bit about yesterday...

-OL Connor Mayes of Van Alstyne is definitely coming in tomorrow. Because Texas signed a large OL class in 2013 and he's an interior guy, it's hard to tell what Texas' plans may be because Knox and Cuney also project inside. I can tell you that he's huge, moves really well for his size and he's pretty aggressive. The best part is he's a ginger. I would not mind if UT offered because I think he's legit and there's room. We shall see.

-Inside Texas thinks DE Jarrett Johnson of Katy Seven Lakes will be offered tomorrow and could possibly pull the trigger. He's been offered by Mizzou and Northwestern thus far, so UT would easily be his best offer to date. He supposedly grew up loving the Texas program so that's a bonus. I'm not sure how I feel about an offer to Johnson at this point, but this would definitely be a case of going after a guy because of his measurables and upside. More of an athlete than a football player at this point. LSU is trying to get him on campus next weekend.

Houston Lamar DB John Bonney (http://texas.rivals.com/viewprospect.asp?Sport=1&pr_key=141384) didn't know what to expect when he made his way to Austin on Sunday for a Longhorn junior day. He really didn't know what to expect when he was pulled aside and toldMack Brown (http://texas.rivals.com/viewcoach.asp?Coach=64) wanted to speak to him, shortly after arriving on campus.

Things couldn't have gone much better for Bonney.

http://vmedia.rivals.com/images/spacer1.gif

John Bonney picked up an offer from Texas on Sunday morning.

"When I first got there, they pulled me aside and took me to coach Brown's office. I got to meet his wife, and he personally offered me there," Bonney said. "Then I got a chance to talk to my position coach, coach (Duane) Akina, and coach (Oscar) Giles, who recruits my area."

When Bonney was pulled aside at roughly 9 a.m., he didn't know an offer was coming. When he realized he was being taken to Mack Brown's office, his heart rate picked up by a tick or two.

"He's one of the best coaches of all time. It felt pretty good that he has that much interest in me," Bonney said. "That was pretty good. It was the first thing I did when I got there, talk to coach Brown, so that was pretty big.

"I didn't even know I was going to his office at first. I saw his name on the door, went into this big office. When he told me about the offer, I was really happy. Both my parents were happy too. My mom likes the whole situation at Texas and my dad liked Mack Brown and coach Akina."

Bonney was impressed with what he saw at the junior day visit, but he wants to see some other schools before coming to a final decision. In fact, Bonney is planning a busy spring tour of campus visits, starting with a visit to LSU's junior day next week.

"I'm going to Ohio State to see some spring practice, Northwestern, Auburn and I'm going to try to go to UCLA. Those are the out of state teams" Bonney said. "I'll go to Baylor as well. It's going to be busy but I want to get as much in as possible. Soon, I'll make a commitment somewhere. I want to at least narrow my list down."

As for a timeframe on a final decision, Bonney doesn't have a deadline in mind, but he's thinking his recruitment doesn't go past the summer.

"I have to get with my dad, my parents. They have to put what they want into it, give me some advice," Bonney said. "I want to be committed before my senior season starts."

The 6-0, 179-pound Bonney ws told by the Texas coaches that they liked his ability to play anywhere in the secondary, and an in-person scouting opportunity by Akina during the 2012 high school playoffs was enough to seal the deal on an offer.

"Coach Akina really liked the fact that I can play both corner and safety" Bonney said. "He said I fit their scheme and he likes my size as well. Me being six feet, I'm big enough for corner and already have good size for a safety. He got to see me play in person, so he saw my versatility."

Bonney doesn't have a formal list of favorites, but the Longhorns appeared to have made a strong enough impression during the junior day visit that they'll likely remain in the race down to the wire.

"Even when they hadn't offered me, I always felt like it would be a good situation. I was still interested in them," Bonney said. "I've been interested in them since I was little. I've been going to a Texas game every year since I was 10. It feels great for them to offer. They're definitely high up there for me. Now I just have to see how everything else goes."

Along with the offer from Texas, Bonney has picked up scholarships from the likes of Auburn, Baylor, Houston, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech and UCLA. Bonney's father, Jerry Bonney, played basketball collegiately for the Houston Cougars.

Quick notes from the weekend from ESPN:

- Dillon Bates will try to come to Texas in March or April so see what's it like to be a Texas player with workouts and teammeetings. Said he remember the orange color from when he grew up, and says that it means a lot to him. He attended a JD at Tennessee this weekend and will be at a Florida DJ next week.

- Tony Brown showed up later than everybody else, so he got to see everything alone. He really liked that. Also said his visit went great.

- Ed Paris had this text to Max Olson; "UT WAS FUN".

Quotes from LB Dillon Bates of Ponte Vedra, FL after receiving a Texas offer (OrangeBloods):

"I was kind of getting Facebook messages from coach Diaz and coach Brown. Then I just got off the phone with coach Brown a few minutes ago," Bates said on Sunday afternoon. "They offered me this morning so it's been an exciting day."

"Mack Brown had asked me to call him. He had to do some junior day stuff, but I called back (Sunday) afternoon. We were just talking about their recruiting class this year, how they didn't take many defensive players knowing they had so many returning starters."

"He said he's excited about my class, the players from Texas and some players from out of state, which they rarely go to. So that's exciting that they see me out of state and want to come get me. It's very humbling."

"Growing up in Texas, watching Texas and there would be a Longhorn every place you go to. That always puts Texas a little higher than most others," Bates said. "I'm looking forward to getting to Texas, seeing the campus, meeting the players and coaches. That's the next step."

"My parents always tell me go wherever I feel comfortable. I have family in Tennessee and my dad went there. But I'm going to go where I feel most comfortable, what fits me," Bates said. "The ultimate decision for me is where I can fit in for four or five years. I'm not locked into Tennessee like people think."

"I was kind of thinking I sort of did (want to cut his list), but other schools keep offering like UCLA, USC is about to, Florida is coming in. That made it a whole lot more confusing. This is a once in a lifetime experience, so I'm just enjoying it," Bates said.

Quotes from RB Donald Catalon after attending Texas' Junior Day (24/7):

“He (Mack Brown) made it clear to us that he didn’t want us to look around,” explained Catalon. “After talking it out, I’m not going to take visits anywhere. Texas has my back, so I have theirs. The only visits I’m taking now are to the spring practices and the spring game in Austin.”

“It made me want to be a Longhorn even more than before,” Catalon said. “I’m definitely going to Texas. I’m 100-percent committed and 100-percent sure that Texas is the place for me. I’m looking forward to my future there.”

“He (Larry Porter) was a very nice guy,” said Catalon. “All the coaches were nice, but I really liked him. It was great getting to finally meet him. I like him a lot actually. To me it really stood out how just about every starting running back he’s coached has went on to be successful in the NFL. That stood out big time really. I really liked learning how much success he’s had in the past.”

“Getting to know those guys (the other commitments) was great,” Catalon told Hookem.com. “We all really hit it off. It makes me excited about our future.”

Update on WR Lorenzo Joe after Sunday's visit to Austin (24/7):

“The whole thing went really good,” said Joe. “It was just a lot of fun. I had a blast getting to hang out with those guys (the other commitments). We all talk through text or online or whatever, but none of us has really had the chance to hang out since we all committed last season. So today gave us that chance. It really felt like we’ve all known each other for a while. We all hit it off really well and I feel like we already have some team chemistry going.”

“I didn’t get to do as much (recruiting) as I planned on,” he explained. “I did get to do some, though, so that was good. I talked with the newest commit, Cam (Hampton) from Dallas (Carter). We talked a little. I talked with Solomon Thomas some and told him it was good to finally meet him and just bragged on Texas to him. I also had a chance to talk to John (Bonney), who Texas offered. I told him he would do big things at Texas and that he should just go ahead and commit. I feel good about that one for sure.”

“I’m very excited about Texas’ new offense,” Joe said. “They talked to the offensive recruits about it and told us about the future of the offense and what exactly they’re looking for. With me being a wide receiver, it sounded great. He said they were going to spread it out a little more, but also try to remain balanced. It’s not going to be just 100-percent passing or anything, but the passing game will be a big part of it. They do want to spread it out more and simplify it, though. They also want it to be much more up-tempo, with more speed on the field to run more plays per game.”

Latest with DE Jarrett Johnson of Katy Seven Lakes after receiving his Texas offer yesterday (24/7):

“I'd give it a 9.5 out of 10,” Johnson said of his time in Austin. “It's not exactly what I thought it would be because it was better. Everything I saw really surprised me.”

“All of the coaches seemed great,” Johnson said. “They all seemed really professional.”

“The best part was looking at what the campus offered,” Johnson said. “Getting to watch some of the players go through a workout and lift was pretty exciting.”

“We saw a lot of the facilities,” Johnson said. “We went inside the practice bubble. I really liked the weight room and the locker room. I liked how in the weight room they have their own specially-designed plates. "

“I want a school with a good education system,” Johnson said. “I want to go somewhere where they care about their players and have a desire to win.”

"Yes sir. From coach (Mack) Brown himself," responded Johnson via text when asked if he received a scholarship offer from Texas. "It went great. It was an amazing experience."

"It was a special thing," said Johnson. "I've gotten two other offers but this one was the best. He (Brown) made it feel like a real interview and it was cool seeing his office and his many rings."

"Texas has been somewhere I wanted to see, so that's a childhood dream come true," Johnson said. "It was great."

"Yeah, they're in a good spot," Johnson responded when asked where Texas stood right now on his list. "(A commitment) is something I have to go over with my parents before I can think of that."

ESPN had a report on Mack's new policy when it comes to commitments taking visits. OL Demetrius Knox isn't happy about it which isn't much of a surprise. Apparently he called Mack and Searels before he left Junior Day to talk things over:

"I feel like, regardless, if you are committed or not, you should be allowed to take visits and official visits to other colleges because, what happens your freshman and sophomore year if you are at a university and you didn't take those visits?" Knox said. "You might have second thoughts or whatever. If you went on those visits you get to decide what school is best for you so you can never have second thoughts."

Yes. If you're still interested in a player, you continue to recruit the player until he signs a LOI or
he tells you to GTFO. Hell, you still have to keep recruiting your own verbal commits until NSD.

Too many of these kids make verbal commits and later change their minds...I feel you should take
all of your visits then make a decision and stick with it. If you want to take visits then simply do not commit.

You have to wonder if this is even an issue if A'Shawn didn't go with Alabama. It hit Mack hard and he's acting like he was blindsided even though A'Shawn took three official visits. The worst part is there was no contingency plan put in place by the staff and Texas was left without a single defensive lineman in 2013. It's almost as if Mack is doing this to make himself feel better because he knows top-notch recruits are starting to doubt the Texas program. When it comes to Knox, I've viewed him as a "soft" verbal since he committed. He likes the recruiting game too much and I think there's drama surrounding him even if Mack didn't reinforce this rule. He may end up with Texas but his recruitment won't be without its frustrating moments.

That's why I'm so interested to see how this plays out. Mack makes a bold claim but when these four-stars and five-stars start looking around, just how hard is he going to search for their potential replacements? We all know how he hates going outside of his comfort zone when it comes to recruiting. Either he's talking nonsense and nothing will happen, or he's going to have to be prepared for the consequences if this policy pushes a recruit he really covets to another school.

Since we're talking about Mack's recruiting policy, here's a good read on some of the new recruiting rules being implemented by the NCAA. Some SEC schools like Alabama, Florida and Georgia already have staffs of 20+ getting ready for the change. Texas doesn't even have a recruiting coordinator for defense as things stand.

After visiting Kentucky over the weekend, Lawson will fly to TCU for an official visit Wednesday morning, his high school coach, Dru Nettles said. He is also pondering whether to stay in Texas for an official visit with the Longhorns over the weekend.

So don't fucking commit.

On one hand you can't blame a kid for taking visits to other schools. Some kid that committed to UT two years ago as a junior when it appeared UT might be back on the upswing, suddenly sees UT in a free fall in his senior season and not a good place to play anymore. So, you can't blame the kid for exploring other options and opportunity.

I just wish the NCAA would ban recruiting players until they are offically seniors (May of their junior year). This would stop a lot of this bullshit.

"That's just something I love to do - compete," Cuney said. "My whole family is like that."

"Texas is probably the most interested right now. Oklahoma State came a couple weeks ago. TCU had come by and introduced themselves to me," Cuney said. "Texas Tech and Florida State have been sending me letters."

"I want to see the facilities (at Texas). I want to go in the classrooms, see how it is. I want to see the field house, I just want one school to amaze me," Cuney said. "When I walk in, I just want to have one school blow me away and make me want to play there."

"Texas, no doubt (is number one). They show the most interest. I get a lot of Facebook messages from them, pretty much every day," Cuney said. "It amazes me, with me coming from Texas, for the University of Texas to be looking at me like they are. I love Texas. But like I said, I'm keeping my options open."

"Everyone is recruiting me as a true center, but I feel I can play anywhere they put me," Cuney said. "I like the part at center, being in control of the line. Center is the most important part of line, and I'm not just saying that because I play it. You get to call the shots, tell people where to go. You have to be the smartest one, have to be able to locate the MIKE linebacker, tell the linemen where to go. I like to be a boss."

"I was lucky to make it to the junior day. After we played on Friday, I told my mom and dad that I wanted to go down there," Hampton said. "We left on Saturday at 5:30, got there at 8 o'clock that night. I actually called the Texas coaches when I got there and told them. They didn't even know. I talked to coach (Bruce) Chambers. He was very ecstatic that I was there."

"My family and I made the decision to go sit in coach (Mack) Brown's office. We had talked for a little bit. Coach Brown, coach Chambers and coach (Manny) Diaz talked about what they like about me and why they recruited me. After that, I just pulled the trigger."
"It hit me right there on the spot on Sunday. I had no intentions of committing until I got there and it just felt right."

"I felt at home at Texas. My family can come and see me play since I'm in the state," Hampton said. "I just got a good vibe about Texas when I was down there."

"His words were that he doesn't want me to go on any visits. When other schools call, tell everyone I'm backing off and staying committed to Texas," Hampton said. "He has my word as a man, so I have to stay committed. It really doesn't bother me (not taking other visits)."

"I feel right about the decision and as coach Chambers told me, if I was to get hurt, the scholarship would still be on the line. But I plan on having a great season, and I don't plan on getting hurt."

"They said I have good character. I 'm a leader, I make big plays in big times," Hampton said. "They like the way I run sideline to sideline and make plays. I think they're recruiting me as an outside guy but I can play anywhere."

Latest with LB Otaro Alaka of Cypress Falls (24/7):

“I’ll be at Texas on Saturday,” said Alaka. “I’m definitely looking forward to it. I haven’t been to a junior day yet, so it is exciting. After Texas, I will go to Texas A&M on March 2nd.”

“They are the only ones probably (A&M and Texas),” he explained. “I was going to go to the Oklahoma one (Junior Day) in January, but they cancelled. My dad lost money for the hotel booking, so now he doesn’t want me going out of state.”

“It would be great,” exclaimed Alaka. “There’s no doubt that they would be one of my top choices.”

“I’ve thought about it (committing to Texas) actually,” Alaka told Hookem.com. “It’s a possibility because I’ve always liked Texas. If I get down there, they offer and they really impress me, then it could happen.”

Quotes from OG/C Terrell Cuney of Jasper (24/7):

“I’m very excited about it (the Texas Junior Day),” Cuney said of the upcoming visit. “I want to really see everything you would look for in a school. I want to see the players practice, talk to them and that type of stuff.”

“We talk a lot,” Cuney explained. “I’d say nearly every day possible when it’s allowed. Coach Searels and I are constantly talking. Our relationship is very cool. He’s my dawg.”

“Texas is my favorite,” Cuney told Hookem.com. “They are my top school and he is a big reason why. I don’t want to go somewhere where I don’t even know my position coach well. So yeah, he’s a very big reason why Texas is out in front of everyone else.”

“I’m going to try and wait for a while,” said Cuney. “I’m not desperate to make a decision right now, so I’m not real worried about it. I think I’ll most likely make it before the season starts though.”

“Yes sir (I plan to commit to Texas in the future),” he responded.

Latest with DE Jarrett Johnson of Katy Seven Lakes (24/7):

“The Texas Longhorns are at the top of the chart,” Johnson told Hookem.com. “They are number one right now.”

“That trip (to Austin) was amazing,” Johnson said. "The facilities, the locker rooms and the coaching staff were all great and that’s why they’re up there for me. I really like Coach (Oscar) Giles a lot too. Oh man, he’s great. He’s a real cool guy.”

“I was invited on Texas A&M’s junior day on March 2nd and Baylor’s on March 23rd,” said Johnson. “Neither is for sure though.”
“The only reason those two visits aren’t set in stone is because I don’t know what exactly will come up in that time,” explained Johnson. “I hope I can commit before my next season though."

“One thing is for sure, it would definitely take a whole lot for any school to knock Texas off from the top,” he added.

Latest with WR KD Cannon. He's uncertain if he'll be able to get to Austin this weekend (24/7):

“I kind of have to see about that (going to Texas' Junior Day),” Cannon said. “I need to talk to my dad because he might have to work.”

“I want to see the new offense they're (Texas) supposed to be running,” Cannon said. “I need to see how different it'll be and how they'll use their playmakers.”

“I have a pretty good relationship with them,” Cannon said. “They're great guys. They know what they're talking about and they've been doing it for a long time."

“They can get me ready to go to the next level.”

“Texas offers me a lot,” Cannon said. “I want to see how the new offense works. They're always winning and that makes them one of top teams.”

“They've (Baylor) been telling me that they've had two great receivers lately (Kendall Wright and Terrance Williams) and now they've got Robbie Rhodes. They put receivers to the NFL,” Cannon said. “And now they're starting to win regularly.”

“I really like Lubbock. It reminded me of home,” Cannon said. “The visit was great and it impressed me a lot. It was better than I anticipated.”

Quotes from DE Gerald Willis III of New Orleans, LA (OrangeBloods):

"For the LSU one, I went to one for the top recruits in the state. I've been to LSU so many times, it's almost like it's the same thing they're telling me. I got to meet with the coaches some more," Willis said. "I've been there so much that there's not much new that they can tell me. I've known coach Frank (Wilson) for a long time."

"The Texas A&M one was a couple weeks ago. I got to see their facilities, talk to their coaches, meet coach (Kevin) Sumlin. I'm just trying to build a relationship with them. Everybody was really nice. They rolled the red carpet for me. It was really nice."

"When my dad and I sat down, we wrote down a list of schools we were going to try to visit this summer. Texas was one of the first ones my dad put on the list," Willis said. "We're going to take that ride this weekend. We've talked to coach Mack Brown, Bo Davis and Larry Porter. My dad been talking to them a few times to set up everything, get all the information. He's going to bring me and Speedy up there this weekend."

"When I talked to coach Brown, he just wanted me to come there and show me the tradition of Texas, the Longhorns, because I don't know much about them," Willis said. "He wants to educate me on the history of Texas, the players that have came through ... just give them a chance to show what they're working with."

"I want to get out of Louisiana, see what's going on in other states. I'm actually looking forward to going up there since I've heard Texas has one of the best campuses of any college."

"My plan, and that can change, but my plan right now is to take it slow, try to see all I can see. That way I know I'm making the right choice, make sure my family will be cool where I go," Willis said. "I want to be comfortable on the field and off the field. I'll probably take my time and commit at one of the all star games but if something pops up and I really like it, I might commit early."

For those that enjoy reading Jesus' stuff, I'll post his latest report because the Board of Regents are having a teleconference tomorrow and I think this article will be made public. It's an interesting read because of the politics involved regarding the future of UT:

Part II of the Humidor is evidently going to deserve a possible part three and four because the table is being set for a sort of clash of Texas political titans with the BOR teleconference meeting tomorrow. Put that meeting in the context of the senatorial vote of confidence led by David Dewhurst yesterday, and you’ve got a case of Political Game Theory possibly spilling over into college athletics. The Cigar tries to explain how that can/will happen, and then we’ll try to mop up as information becomes available, inside the Humidor.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: First off, what the heck went on yesterday and what does it mean to Texas athletics?

Big Cigar: As you know, one by one 11 state senators spanning the political spectrum voiced their support for President Powers in his fight against Rick Perry. The interesting part is that David Dewhurst, thought to be a huge political ally of Perry’s, made a personal plea that not only vouched for Powers, but chastised Perry for his method of attacks against the University President. It was great political theatre and I’m hearing it pissed Perry and his people off. In terms of athletics, if Perry doesn’t back down, which it looks like he won’t, then Powers and the athletic department as a whole better be prepared for a PR onslaught from the governor that will leave no punches pulled, especially the salacious ones.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: Before we get into what the athletic department can expect, what will the meeting consist of tomorrow?

Big Cigar: I’m told Perry is pushing for the Powers vote to take place soon and the BOR will be left to ponder how soon that will be. It’s kind of important because “the agenda” will be brought up but remember this is all just a formality, the BOR already know what the agenda consists of and what Perry is willing to expose and say to make sure it gets through. He wants a $10,000 diploma at the University of Texas to be law of the land and he’s going to sit back and smile when the best minds (deans, professors, researchers) at the University start sending out their resumes as a result. So the real importance is just setting the table for a vote.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: So this isn’t all about a presidential run in 2016 for Perry to strengthen his already conservative platform?

Big Cigar: No, the man has serious ill-will towards the University and would like nothing more than to diminish its image as a premier institution and the flagship school of the state of Texas.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: So why Dewhurst’s plea? Why now?

Big Cigar: Publicly Dewhurst’s plea is huge because it weakens some of Perry’s base. In his remarks, Dewhurst also hinted at some of the things going on behind the scenes and his overall disagreement with some of Perry’s tactics. Privately Dewhurst thinks Perry’s witch hunt to undermine Powers with a variety of investigations and airing of dirty laundry is disgusting and he’s told people as much. Dewhurst sees things as being imminent and he doesn't like Perry's tactics at all. This is where athletics comes in I suspect.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: How so?

Big Cigar: There’s a fear that Perry is prepared to make public some items that are best left in house with respect to the University and Texas athletics and Dewhurst does not want to be party to that. He certainly does not want to participate in destroying President Powers for the sake of turning Texas into a diploma mill, but here’s where Powers needs to be smart. If some of these things going on in the Athletic department start to bubble to the service, Powers needs to clean house and fire some lieutenants. To stubbornly protect Deloss Dodds in the face of some of these allegations is bad for the state of Texas, the University of Texas, and its sports programs. Make no mistake, in a perfect world Perry wants Powers out, and Deloss Dodds and a $10,000 tuition cap in. That’s the dream scenario for Perry because that’s what hurts the University of Texas the most.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: So with tomorrow being a prologue to the actual war, what can people do to help?

Big Cigar: Easy. Support the 11 senators and David Dewhurst for going to bat for Powers by calling their offices and thanking them or pledging your support. Call Perry’s office and do the opposite. Also, pay close attention to Senator Glenn Hegar’s appointment to chair the Senate Nominations Committee. He’s the gate-keeper to any senatorial scrutiny that Perry appointments could receive in a hearing setting. Let him know that the people of Texas expect him to do his job in providing oversight. He’s an Aggie but he’s also a Dewhurst appointment so call his office and let him know how you feel.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: Interesting. So getting back to the athletic department, what are you hearing behind the scenes there?

Big Cigar: I still think we’ll get a pseudo-resignation from Deloss Dodds by the summer, but this may speed up the process if President Powers is listening to some of his advisers. At the coaching level, I still believe this is Mack Brown’s last season at Texas and from what I hear this is the most hands-off he’s been during the spring. He was a fixture this time last season around Moncrief-Neuhaus and now I’m told he’s nowhere to be found. It could mean something or it could mean nothing, I just found it interesting.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: So it sounds like Major is running the show?

Big Cigar: Yep, the assistants are living on campus more or less. They’re really trying to get things fixed, so maybe this is Mack’s way of giving them some space and autonomy.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: Can you shed any light on what’s going on with Rick Barnes?

Big Cigar: He’s on a short leash because his name may be mentioned in one of these BOR meetings. If so, I can’t see him surviving especially when Deloss steps down.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: So that’s the best case scenario, a total remake of the athletic department in basically a calendar year. What’s the worse case?

Big Cigar: Rick Perry picking our academic standards and our athletic department.

Jesus Shuttlesworth: Thanks.

Big Cigar: You bet.

“I’ll be visiting there (Texas) soon,” he explained. “I think my coaches are going to take me later on this year, so I will get to see everything then.”

“At this point I haven’t even talked to any of the coaches there at Texas,” McDowell said. “They just basically invited me to the junior day camp through my coaches, so I haven’t talked to anyone. Texas is a program I’m definitely interested in though, so I would like to get to know them.”

“Right now I have a few favorites,” said McDowell. “Texas, Texas A&M, Alabama, LSU, Florida and Mississippi State are the schools I like a lot.”

“Everything is bigger in Texas,” he said while laughing. “So it’s a big deal when they show interest in you. It’s definitely a big deal on my part because Texas is a big state with a lot of great talent out there and if they’re interested in me, well, then I must be doing something right.”

Quotes from DE/LB Silvester Hayes of Dallas South Oak Cliff (24/7). He's a possible offer on Saturday along with his teammate, S Jyaz Jones:

“I have been to Baylor and SMU last weekend. They were great experiences. Baylor was exciting to go see. They treated me very well, and it was really organized. I talked to the head coach (Art Briles) and defensive coordinator (Phil Bennett), and they told me they loved my athleticism and looked forward to watching me more,” he said.

“I’m supposed to go down to Texas on Saturday. It will be a surprise to me. I’m not sure what to expect. I’m excited to see the campus and the facilities. I hear it’s real nice,” he said.

“I just found out yesterday that Texas Tech had offered me,” Hayes said Wednesday afternoon. “When I found out, I was surprised and excited.”
“Texas Tech is a school I have always liked, so that was great they offered me. I hope Texas offers, too, and Baylor. Really, I hope all the schools showing interest offer me,” he said.

“I’m in track right now. I’m in the long jump and running the 400. We actually had our first track meet last weekend, but I was at SMU. We have another meet this weekend, but I will be at Texas,” he said.

I read somewhere that Texas starts spring practice today, but other schools aren't starting til next month. I think Kansas doesn't start until April. Why wouldn't all schools start as early as they can? I'm assuming it's because each school is only allowed a certain number of practices in the Spring and they can choose when to use them?

24/7 has said for a few weeks now that both he and OL Demetrius Knox are looking around behind the scenes. I don't doubt that he genuinely likes Texas, but he's the kind of guy who simply committed too early. He likes the recruiting game and Twitter fun. He also went to an Ole Miss Junior Day at the beginning of the month but claims he was just riding along with a teammate. He does have an Ole Miss offer.

Thanks Floss. Agree that he sounds like a dude who is still playing the game. I'll pass along anything new I hear from the AU side (I've got a rivals membership and JHoke is quite good)

First time he had contact with Texas was in the 8th grade when he spoke to Applewhite. He consider himself a Jamaal Charles type of back, at least they are from the same high school. Apparently he grew up as a Texas and LSU fan.

“My whole room is Texas,” he said. “I am a big Longhorn fan.”

Texas Tech and A&M has both been in on him, and LSU invited him in for a JD but he was unable to attend due to a track meet.

Glad you mentioned spring practice because I forgot to post about it. Yes, it begins today and concludes with the spring game on March 30th. Each school is allowed 15 practices in a 29-day timeframe. The week of Spring Break does not count. My best guess concerning Texas is they like to have spring practices coincide with Junior Days so the prospects can see everything while they're on campus and Mack probably likes spring practice to be over by the time the spring evaluation period starts in April. I assume he wants his coaches to be focused on evaluations and preparing for the summer camps. There's a lot of travel involved and spring practice would get in the way of that. The staff went everywhere last year from California to Florida.

Update on DT Cedric Johnson of Rowlett (24/7):

“I’m very excited about it all,” Johnson said of the junior day. “I’ve been looking forward to it.”

“Texas has a great tradition,” said Johnson. “The tradition that they carry is one of the main reasons I’ve liked them and something I want to see more of. But honestly, more than anything though, I’m looking forward to seeing what exactly makes Texas unique and why it makes every kid in the state wants to go there.”

“I get to see a group of guys who work so hard and truly leaves everything on the field,” he explained. “That’s exciting to me. I’ll be watching them closely and especially watching how the defense practices, along with how tight of a unit the team is.”

“I’m hoping to learn some stuff from him (Bo Davis),” Johnson said, “because anything new I can learn to help improve my game is always a plus.”

“I would be very excited about it (if Texas offered),” Johnson told Hookem.com. “At the same time, I would kind of like to keep my options open. I also like Baylor, Oklahoma and Texas A&M besides Texas. I’ll admit though, there might be a possibility that I could go ahead and shut my recruitment down if they did go ahead and offer me.”
