Barkley: Who he play for? :rolleyes

After only 334 minutes of play for three NBA teams, James White hits the big time at the All-Star Dunk contest. :toast

James White! has had only 2 dunks so far this entire season.

He better win the Dunk Contest because, quite frankly, that's the only chance he'll ever have to make a name for himself.

Must be nice to not even be getting significant minutes on your team and still be able to compete in the dunk contest...:lol

Alot of people were hoping he could stay on with a team long enough to make it till All-Star break. Maybe given the chance like Danny Green he could have been our starting shooting guard. He would a much better finisher for sure.

I'm glad they put him in. It means they recognize that the contest has been garbage as of late and are willing to go a little bit out of their way to make it exciting again.

Really? James White has had multiple opportunities to make it in the league without success until just recently. Danny Green, on the other hand, had a much smoother run into the league and is a legitimate NBA player with legitimate NBA skill (most notably his 3 point shot). James White was mostly an athlete that showed flashes but couldn't ever put it all together.

So on what do you base this idea that he could be a starting SG? You saw him play a good game once or twice? Thats like saying that Darius Washington could have been a starting PG because I saw him stand up Baron Davis once. Yes he was great that game. But can he do it consistently? No. Theres a reason Washington isn't in this league.

So can James White do it consistently? To date, not really. Hes averaging less than 7 mpg as an end-of-the-bench kind of guy. Hes in the dunk contest because hes an athlete, not because hes been especially effective in the league.

Danny Green, on the other hand, has consistently knocked down a metric assload of threes. Hes shooting almost 43% this year with over 250 attempts. Sure hes flawed, but he is a legitimate NBA role player with a legitimate skill.

They're not even worth comparing. One is a success, the other is what we call a "journeyman".

He's now played in a total of 44 NBA games, 34 of them coming in this year for the Knicks.

To be honest, he's shot a better percentage of FGs and 3pts in his career than Captain Jack over the past few years. Not that that means anything I suppose.

Sometimes it really just involves getting the right chances. If Danny Ferry hadn't been fired in Cleveland would DG have gotten a chance here? If Manu didn't get hurt last year and JA stink it up would DG have gotten a chance? Also if DG didn't have a coach in Pop who told him what to work on would he have stuck around? JW needs a good coach that work with him on improving his game.

How awesome would it have been if James White would have developed well for the Spurs?

+ 1

The problem though with the all star weekend contests the past couple of years were some of the restrictions for the events. For the dunk contest you could only be eligible if you were in the league for less than 3 years (or something like that). I know he didn't play much in 2007 but he should have been in the dunk contest, it is a dunk contest not a most popular overall player who happens to dunk as well contest. Get the best dunkers in the contest.

Maybe not in San Antonio. Then again, he might have gotten a chance in Cleveland. But he had the skill and the pedigree. Somebody would have signed him and played him.

So a good coach would change it all for him? Maybe. But then again, how many players are out there that had the ability, had the coaching, and still couldn't put it together? Assloads. No, I'm still not buying what you're selling. This guy is 30 years old and the light is basically just flickering a little. Hes finally made it in the league, sure...but only just barely.
