He says he is old and tired.

LONDON — Recognizing what he described as his failing strength of “mind and body,” Pope Benedict XVI announced Monday that he would step down as head of the Catholic church, the first pontiff to give up his duties since 1415.

“After having repeatedly examined my conscience before God, I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry,” Benedict said in a statement.

Good riddance. I have no good expectations about a successor. Ever since Pope John XXIII, every pope since then has been rushing headlong toward the 12th Century. This Church has not even a shred of moral authority anymore, imo.

It could just be pure coincidence but the timing of this being only a week or so after that Mea Maxima Culpa (which I had to turn off halfway through because of how disgusting it was hearing about deaf kids getting molested) documentary came out raises a few eyebrows, especially with the amount of blame that movie points at the vatican.

EDIT: Just realized it was in theatres for awhile but its premier on HBO was last week.

I heard (though never confirmed) that in order to stop the whole "Pay me for absolution" that the church restructured that all church property is technically deeded to the pope (so that a priest couldn't say "give me your land and I will absolve you"). If this is true, then he is the richest man in the world.

Well women wont become priests or priests be allowed to marry even with the youngest of cardinals there, so I dont know why this is even discussed.

Or I should say:

Which cardinal would have fought to change all 3 of these items.

Trump doesn't 'see' the money either, that doesn't mean he has no control over it. He's the Pope. If he wants the Vatican Bank to unload money somewhere, it happens. Just like the last Pope put in control some buddy from Germany in control of the bank.

Trump controls all the purse strings even in his trusts, tbh.

When you are in a religious order, the superiors of the order control all the purse strings. Generally, your rank within the church has nothing to do with heirarchy within said order. At least from my own personal experience.

All he is doing is regurgitating the 'stewardship' divine right bullshit so you can claim poverty but still take cash. I don't take the money; I am just steward over it for God.

In theory, priests being able to be married is fine. Its existed in church history. In practice, I dont see it as being practical. Mostly due to the massive requirements being a Catholic priest requires of you.

I dont see a man being able to fully devote all of his energies to both:

1. Pastoral duties
2. Family duties

One WILL suffer.

I'll give you this example: Johnny is sick and you are at home watching him. The wife is also sick and you are taking care of them. Mrs. Jones calls saying, Mr. Jones is on his death bed and would like last rights.

Someone suffers. Which does the priest place priority over. You cannot devote yourself 100% to both church being on call 24/7 and to family when you are essentially on call 24/7 also.

As far as the women priesthood, its a murkier subject because its never been done. Considering there have been numerous bans on women priests, including by both John Paul II and Benedict XVI, there are theological questions as to whether or not its even possible, no matter what Cardinal Policarpo may believe himself.

Then on the last question, I get the Catholic Church stance on contraception. Whether its something to ever be changed, we'll see. I think of the three, its the most likely to occur, with married priests a very distant second and women priests something at less than a .01 % chance of happening.
