"When you outrebound somebody like we did and to be in the position we were in, we beat ourselves."

-Tom Thibodeau

:td Lame thing to say, tbh. The Spurs played their azzes off to get that win.

Well, what else can he say? "Pop can beat my squad with his bench?" I agree, the Spurs just played harder and better tonight. They took this game away, it was not given to them.

Mugen

I guess he's referring to the turnovers. I'd buy it if they were close all game and only lost by single digits. But not when they were thoroughly outplayed for the majority of the game by Kawhi & Co. tbh.

TheSkeptic

Well I think what hurt the Bulls was Thibodeau's rotations, Deng the all star being thoroughly outclassed by Leonard, and the turnovers. I guess I understand where he's coming from since usually controlling the glass is what puts you in prime position to win and the Spurs were playing without the Big 3.

But the Spurs definitely outplayed the Bulls tonight. Thibs needs to just congratulate the Spurs and move on.

Spurs win by 15 despite getting crushed on the boards 49 to 26. Must be some kind of record.

Well they did turn it over a lot. A hell of a lot. That's generally acceptable to attribute to oneself.

But still, [Spurs - Duncan/Parker/Manu/Jackson] > [Bulls - Rose].

If they beat themselves then they were beat by two teams tonight. That must really hurt.

He's just trying to motivate his team. If Pop said the same thing after we lost like that, We'd probably think fair enough, we should've won. Thibs doesn't(and shouldn't) care about how we feel, he's trying to get the Bulls players to work harder and be better.

Difference is, Pop DOESN'T say things like that. He's more apt to say "We got our asses beat," than to not give the other team any credit. I hear what you're saying, though.

Thibs is a great coach. But he is an anti-Pop among the great coaches in the league. For him, the regular season wins matter too much and he plays his main players to the ground (poor Rose, poor Noah with plantar fascitis). Plus being butthurt like this is not going to motivate his team, either, IMO.

How severe do you think Thibodeau's punishment from Stern will be?

Not for making these comments, but for getting blown out by the Spurs' backups as Pop flashes another middle finger to the league.

Pop said the same thing basically, they didn't play a good game, they had too many turnovers. Both coaches watched the same game, they saw the same things, they got the same conclusions, they told the truth.

True, I recall a depleted Blazers squad with Nate McMillan kicking our asses at home, and Pop's praise for them was non-stop.

Pop's description of the Spurs WCF loss to OKC was basically "Spurs beat themselves." ie "They stole our mojo" "we forgot who we were" etc. Pop's just a master rhetorician tbh, able to say stuff like that without actually saying it :hat

Thibs is garbage. The only reason he won is because he had the best PG on the planet and some great role players for a few years. The minute Rose got hurt, the Bulls started to seriously suck.

Lolwut? Coaches say this all the time. They say the other team played great but they were the ones who lost the game and could have played better. I'm sure I could find different variations of this for all coaches including pop. It's to protect the confidence of players to lessen the blow of the ass beating to their morale.

Timvp didn't post the entire quote. He did give the Spurs credit. But the Bulls gave up 29 points off 19 turnovers. Tough to win games whe you hand your opponent 29 points. Regatdless, a good win for the Spurs.

Oh, and Lol, calling Leonard, Green, Splitter, Diaw, and Neal D-leaguers.

I agree with Thibs, tbh..losing to a severely shorthanded team that you outrebounded by 20+ is embarrassing and should be considered an upset, essentially "beating yourself"..

Spurs are always undermine, disregarded and disrespected.

Yeah, I don't recall Pop ever saying the Spurs beat themselves. In basketball talk, that's disrespectful to say, no matter how you frame it, IMO.

I don't think it's all that different than Pop playing the soft card, tbh. When Pop says "we were soft" or for that matter if he says "we didn't hit shots" or "we didn't play defense" or "we didn't take care of the ball" the implication is clear: "If we did X we'd have won."

All coaches think they have the talent on paper to win. It hey look inward. It's not about the opponent it's about controlling how your guys play. You can't worry about them.

roycrikside

"We beat ourselves. By double digits."

Damn. They must have been doing some Ricky Davis shit to lose so badly to themselves. :lmao

This should put Pop back into the CotY discussion, tbh. It wasn't a fluke that our B team almost beat the Heat. I think it's between Pop and Jackson for CotY now.

"Just mistakes on our part, obviously we give them credit they played well. Guys like Serge (Ibaka) continue to attack us and make plays. But all-in-all I thought we got a little stagnant on the offensive end."
-- Duncan after a loss vs OKC

spurfan is so sensitive
thibs is a good coach minus the running his players into the ground
he doesnt have much offensive talent to work with and he seems to feel like he has to play boozer just like pop did with jefferson because of his paycheck

Spurs win by 15 despite getting crushed on the boards 49 to 26. Must be some kind of record.
From Elias: The Spurs defeated the Bulls 103-89 despite being outrebounded, 49-26. Only one other team in the last 35 seasons has won by at least 14 points in a game in which it was -23 or worse on the boards. The Grizzlies posted a 92-78 win over the Nuggets in a game where Denver out-rebounded Vancouver 59-34, on April 19, 1996 :wow

the 14 points is what makes it seem like it never happens

won by double digits would be a better metric and they got outrebounded by a little over 2:1

I think some of the reactions here are way overblown. Thibodeau also gave a ton of credit to the Spurs. On reading his whole take on the game, I didn't get the impression that it was his intention to disrespect the Spurs.

I have to say that "we just didn't make shots" is about 100 times as delusional, considering Pop routinely said it when the Spurs were crushed by more complete teams. That said, Thibs has clearly spent too much time reading his own press. Turns out he's not really as good a coach without great defenders AND the MVP on his squad.

"You can't hold on to the ball," Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau said. "The ball has to move side to side. They're too good defensively. In the second half we settled; we took some poor shots. With the depth that they have, they're going to make you pay." -Tom Thibodeau
