View Full Version : Are Spurs Fans College Fans?

I was explaining to someone the other day that the fact that I'm such a die hard Spurs fan has disqualified me from being passionate about college hoops. Because of the high basketball IQ I have watched for so many years in the Spurs system, I find myself getting so frustrated watching college basketball. There are so many mistakes and bonehead plays.

Don't get me wrong, I understand the college players are still developing, and I do get into march madness just a like anyone else, but I just can't be passionate about it. Maybe I sound like a basketball snob, but I just enjoy watching the Spurs Offense share the ball and make the right play 95% of the time for the highest % shot. I also love watching our defense be so effective even when we don't have defensively gifted players...

So I was wondering if there are any passionate college hoops fans out there that consider themselves die hard spurs fans...??

i think the college teams worth following in our area are a little difficult to love. ut games usually leave a pretty nasty taste in my mouth.

i've been getting into march madness the last couple years. personally, i love louisville. they run a beautiful defense. i've been followin them a bit this season.

I'll keep an eye on Louisville this March.

Generally people that are passionate about college basketball are passionate about their alma mater. I love college bball almost as much as I love the NBA, but I went to Syracuse. If I went to Elon College, it might be different (no disrespect to Elon).

I don't really watch college hoops at all. It is basically another D-League. I understand that it is unfair for me to judge it like that, but IMO its the truth.

I agree. Personally, I simply refuse to watch college"basketball" its an abomination to the sport.

45 second shot clocks...really?! it completely takes the fun out of the last 5 minutes of the game.

that 45 second shot clock is a joke... since they don't really run an offense, they just pass the ball around the perimeter until the shot clock gets down to a point where they are justified in breaking down the zone themselves, or taking a bad shot.

Yuck. Three guards playing catch on the perimeter until someone jacks up a three. I put college bball in the same category as the WNBA, watered-down entertainment for people who care more about watching people they have something in common with (alma mater, gender) than watching the game at the highest level.

I love the Spurs....and I love the Mississippi State Bulldogs.....but we SUCK at basketball at the moment....and probably the next couple years as well... So I only pay attention to our college recruiting these days and devote most of my attention to pro basketball.

I enjoy watching March Madness, sweet 16, final four etc...but I only root for Longhorns, and even then I don't keep up with college sports a whole lot.

a big reason why I enjoy the Spurs is because it does feel like the ultimate college team/system. instead of seeing favorite players leave after a couple years, we get to see them evolve and change over the course of 10+ years. Our players are smart and execute at a level other teams can only dream about. Plus our team has a certain family/alumni feel to it, so it feels like a college team but with more life experience and longevity.

It's 35 seconds.

I don't like college ball either. The shot clock and slow pace is what kills it for me. I also hate how offenses attack the zone in college. They just swing it around the perimeter for 25 seconds, then finally drive to the basket where they will usually miss or get fouled. I also don't understand how many people say that college is all about defense and in the NBA players just don't care. That can be true in some cases, but playing a half-assed zone against teams that don't know how to beat it is not tenacious d by any stretch of the imagination. Kind of an ugly brand of basketball, I'd rather watch my Spurs.

Not really. I watch college games as I'm at the gym(I'm not a fan tho) and I was rooting for UK the year that Brandon Knight was drafted to the NBA, but that is about it.

I find the college games to be funny. Watching some college players attempt lobs, trick passes to try to gain style points.

Just wow, Havoc. That'd make me run out to buy tickets. :wow

I like March Madness. I like to watch "my" teams play, "my teams" being the schools where I have a degree (Harvard, Duke, U.Cincinnati) and Xavier, which is practically in my back yard. It helps that Duke, U.C., and XU have good basketball programs. (And even Harvard has a pretty good program now, or at least they did until the team's co-captains had to take this year off because of an academic scandal (http://www.boston.com/sports/blogs/thebuzz/2012/09/report_harvard.html). :nope)

But I almost never watch other teams play until the NCAA tournament. The quality of play just isn't high enough absent a rooting interest.

Unless it's UCLA, I only care if there are legit NBA allstar prospects playing. Probably why I have watched one non-UCLA game this year (seeing Duke go down by 30 to Miami was too good to miss).

I can see the appeal though. In the NCAA tournament people play harder than in the NBA. They play wild and reckless and make idiotic mistakes though. I definitely prefer watching NBA players who pick their spots a little more.

Try being a Texas Tech hoops fan :( I was there while Bob Knight was there though, that was fun. We at least made the sweet 16 then.

Other than my Alma Mater, I don't care for college hoops much besides March Madness.

there was this game in the tournament where i think #2 ucla was playing the adam morrison #3 gonzaga and gonzaga blew this huge lead with like a minute left. kept turning the ball over and just being generally stupid. my roommate said something i'll never forget: "The reason march madness is exciting is because the players suck." whenever i watch a march madness game and it gets exciting, i look for the reasons and frequently it is because one team just doesn't understand how to not blow it.

College basketball is boring unless you are playing in the game.
Watching it on TV (unless you are a Homer) is boring too.

i think that was the year Noah and Horford dominated out of Florida and beat UCLA in the championship. Sadly, im in my 4th year at UCLA and they completely sucked ass my first 3 years there after being perennial contenders prior. Lame how they were good before I gave a shit about them, and I never got into college ball because they sucked in my time there. Apprently they're doing well now, but I don't bother watching college ball

Nothing worse than to watch the Spurs, and then try to stomach a Texas game. Unless one enjoys self initiated acid reflux.

One of the few times I've agreed with Lefty. NCAA is just a place guys named Cody, Luke, Tyler and Adam can play and not get their sht blocked / get dunked on. Very boring, especially this year since it's painfully obvious with all the upsets that there is no real talent out there.

SpurRaider21, can you give us your take on Shabazz and whether he's going to live up to the hype from what you've seen of him at PP.

Since he's a fellow alum, are/were you a Westbrook fan...he's like the one UCLA guy I can't stand in the league...even more than Matt Barnes tbh.

College ball sucks until march madness.

If players would stay 4 years, it would be better, but still bad, imo.

Strange because I prefer college football over the NFL.
