Jerruh Jones want a long term contract for Romo

Dallas Cowboys (http://espn.go.com/nfl/team/_/name/dal/dallas-cowboys) executive vice president Stephen Jones said the team wants a long-term contract with quarterback Tony Romo (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/5209/tony-romo) because he's the key piece to moving toward a championship.



"Tony is a key piece of what we're about going forward," Jones said Tuesday. "We're certainly going to be looking at his situation (in) time. We've historically (extended contracts) with quarterbacks for the Dallas Cowboys ahead of time. We did it with Troy (Aikman) and we certainly want to look at that with Tony so we can all move forward in terms of how we want to play around our salary cap with our team. Tony is the key piece in terms of how your cap is represented."

Troy and Tony don't belong in the same sentence. I think this is a bad move for the Cowboys, but there aren't a lot of options out there.

There really isn't any better options out there right now. It's a weak QB draft class and there's nobody who will immediately produce like Romo does. It's a shame he'll never be able to jump his mental hurdles with the clowns that coach him (and Jerrah). I'm curious what Romo's career would've looked like by now had Parcells stayed.

If Parcells had wanted to stay Jerry would have found a way to force him out. Jerry wanted him gone even more than Bill wanted to leave.

Money wise, it's a smart move. If they can rework his contract it will save them more cap space. Start with Romo, then possibly Carr/Ware/Free/Austin can be reworked as well to give them cap relief.

Although, there has been talk of just letting Austin's deal run its course, and the possibility of releasing Free. Cutting Free would cause a lot of dead money though.

They are already working on restructuring Carr's contract.

we need to draft his replacement asap. it's evident our window has closed with the likes of witten/romo/ware/etc. such a damn shame jerry jone's had to waste all that talent.

hopefully we can get a qb to groom and start shoring up both sides of the trenches...

he may not be the greatest QB in the league but i'd swap him for cassell in a heartbeat.
