Are you suggesting that the shrapnel from the explosion vaporized, and didn't hit anything?

in that case, aren't we constantly bombarded? :rolleyes

It was a sonic boom. There was no reason for the meteorite to explode. Burn out, sure. We used to break windows around the base all the time.

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, a nationalist leader noted for vehement statements, blamed the Americans.
"It's not meteors falling. It's the test of a new weapon by the Americans," the RIA Novosti news agency quoted him as saying.
Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin said the incident showed the need for leading world powers to develop a system to intercept objects falling from space.
"At the moment, neither we nor the Americans have such technologies" to shoot down meteors or asteroids, he said, according to the Interfax news agency.

Yeah I was thinking the same, I think the meteor pretty much disintegrated The injured people were hurt by the sonic boom, not the impact.

From NASA's press release (http://www.nasa.gov/topics/solarsystem/features/russianmeteor.html):

According to NASA scientists, the trajectory of the Russian meteorite was significantly different than the trajectory of asteroid 2012 DA14 (http://www.nasa.gov/topics/solarsystem/features/asteroidflyby.html), making it a completely unrelated object. Information is still being collected about the Russian meteorite and analysis is preliminary at this point. In videos of the meteor, it is seen to pass from left to right in front of the rising sun, which means it was traveling from north to south. Asteroid DA14's trajectory is in the opposite direction, from south to north.
The meteor is the largest reported meteor since the Tunguska event in 1908. Impact was at 3:20:26 UTC. The meteor was 15 meters in size prior to entering the Earth's atmosphere, larger than one over Indonesia on Oct. 8, 2009 and one-third of the size of asteroid 2012 DA14. It grazed across the atmosphere, where the meteor trail was visible for less than 30 seconds. The meteor was also brighter than the Sun.

Details are still being measured. More information to come.

Apparently, 900 people were injured in the event. Most of the people injured were injured by breaking glass and collapsed roofs. Huge explosions were heard as the meteor passed overhead.

So I happened to be going to a talk today by someone who is an impact and meteorite expert (he's a physicist but his talk today was actually on climate change) so he gave us some new info he had just gotten and talked for a few minutes about the event. The force estimate was about 300 KT which is MUCH smaller than the Tunguska event but still a big ass event. It entered the atmosphere at a shallow angle which is why the trail is so long. I think he also mentioned some of the size estimates but I honestly don't remember what they were.

It would sort of explode on it's own. Not sure what the exact term would be, but it would be more like an implosion. Basic physics. Ever put a freezing temperature glass marble in boiling water?

33,000 MPH. Heat friction. Surface expansion faster than heat transfer. They break apart because of that, rather than explode. The explosion was when a piece hit.

As for burning out on its own, it was too big to burn out. One small enough to burn out before hitting wouldn't have need as bright as this one was.

russian rushed towards the landing site and fought each other for the meteorite's fragments which might contain some valuable metal elements, and that was how so many people got injured but no one dead tbh. russians might be the shittiest european citizens tbh, a total disgrace to the white people

i did notice the explosive light, it only lasted a few seconds and the meteorite like vanished. the omniscient WC brings us knowledge again :tu

So what is the correct term. It isn't an implosion, or explosion. What is it called when something breaks apart because the thermal expansion of the outside exceeds the elasticity to the inside?

Is it Thermal Stress Fracture, or is there a better term?

Just give up now, and there might be one or two people who will wonder if you were trolling, as opposed to going full retard.

Then again, we would miss out on the entertainment.....

Never mind, carry on.

shit just broke apart because of the strong friction against atmosphere, it looked like an explosion when the fire expanded, but it's not what you often call an explosion by its strict definition tbh. it just broke into smaller pieces which burned out all at once imho

Yes... Very close...

It looked white-hot with the camera, but that can be deceiving because the camera elements were likely saturated. I've seen a red streaking meteor break up before, but is was smaller, at night, and there was no indication of impact following. It was a very interesting sight. This one brightened up the streets in daylight!

So, what is the correct terminology? It eludes me right now.
