Well deserved after his recent string of games. Tony sits only behind LeBron James right now on the MVP ladder.

STATS FROM LAST WEEK (2/15-2/21):30.5 ppg | 3.0 rpg | 9.0 apg | 2.0 spg
The long All-Star weekend didn't slow down Parker or the Spurs, either. They whipped the Sacramento Kings Tuesday night behind Parker's 30 points and 11 assists and then trounced Chris Pauland the Los Angeles Clippers on Thursday as Parker led the way with 31 points and seven assists. Just so everyone is clear on just how good Parker is lately: he is averaging 28.5 points on 56 percent shooting and 9.3 assists over his past five games for the runaway best team in the league (in the standings at least).

I envy the hometown Spurs fans who can actually go catch a home game and see Duncan, Manu and Tony all play at the same time. These guys will all be in the Hall of Fame and their numbers will obviously be hanging from the rafters. If you live in SA, go see a game. Think about us poor bastards that caught all the games under Rotten Fitzsimmons.

I love the qualification. Like there's any other way to evaluate teams that would give a different result right now.

Lebron is definitely getting it this year and if Tony keeps it up, he'll be second for sure

Parker has really impressed me this past month. He's on a whole other level. Right in Lebron's orbit.

Would love for him to keep it up and get and MVP out of it.

Absolutely deserved haven't always been on his band wagon but hes amazingly efficient right now and most impressive to me is when he turns it up on "D" also.

Tony Parker is the best point guard in the NBA.

So we have the #2 MVP candidate, are #1 in the power rankings (i think), and TD is still getting major consideration for DPOY despite missing significant time. Can we please stop saying "zomg we're under appreciated like always."

and we've had a fair share of recently national televised games

Who knows, maybe he'll get the Karl Malone MVP treatment where everybody said MJ deserved it more the year he got it but still managed to eek out the most votes out of nowhere?

As good as it is to see TP play at an MVP level, I don't think it's a winning format for the playoffs. The first game the other team changes their defense on him and Parker goes into passive mode the Spurs are going to lose because they've become so reliant on him.

Not this year. He's learning to be a true point guard. I believe he will adjust much better if teams try to adjust to him...

If Tony averaged 40-10-20 the rest of the way they'd still give it to LeBron i'm sure.

LeBron still probably deserves it, but maybe the voters will try to be hipster or "visionary" and give it to Parker.

But tbh if the Spurs end up with the league's best record by a decent margin (4, 5 games) the TP4MVP chants might grow pretty loud. I think he's going to need strong showings in remaining games against Miami and OKC

That would be nice. Malone winning over MJ in 97 and over Duncan in 99, pfft what a load of shit.

It's not too hard to make a case for Parker. Lebron, for all of his gaudy stats has his team with two stars four games behind Parker's oft-injured team. If the award is truly about who's been most valuable and not who's better in a vacuum, Lebron isn't even close to a shoe-in.

If Pop doesn't win the COY, Parker the MVP or Duncan the DPOY, voters have to reevaluate their selection procedure.

He wont get it because LeBron is the bigger star, but he desrves it

Should be top 3 for sure

But since LeBron doesnt care about regular season awards he will probably give to Parker, and play even better in the playoffs

No, If he averages 40 assists, 10 steals and 20 blocks, I'm sure they will give it to him.

You're haunted by the WCF tbh. I'm not saying it's an unwarranted fear, but I haven't seen anything passive about Parker throughout this entire season. Two of the big three out, no problem. Throw length or the best athlete at him, still dominant. He's just got that killer instinct this year. He'll need to be that same force in the playoffs for the Spurs tp grab #5, but I'm slowly becoming a believer that he will.

If this were LeBron going for 3 in a row instead of 2, Parker would likely get it. Voters shy away from the 3 peat for some reason.

It is amazing how one game on national television can change minds. If they were paying attention, they wouldn't be so surprised.

True. Tony has seemed to improve and not shrink from bad experiences. His work effort and drive are excellent. We can remember how he was for ring #1, mostly marginalized and bailed out by Speedy. He has improved every year since then. And won 2 more rings and a Finals MVP. If you can dim out the hype machine that the NBA has become, he is the MVP.
He has a shot at MVP, if LeBron falters or the Spurs get even more ridiculous.

truth bombs

only reason TP isn't #1 is because of Lebron's recent stretch, if Lebron cools down and TP keeps this up he'll have a decent shot at winning MVP. If not, he won't. Not because ":cry small market :cry" but because Lebron deserved it

Like Barkley said, LeBron is the best player in the league, but it depends how people interpret what MVP means.

No doubt about it. I still laugh at the people on this board who claim CP is still better than him.

Cool to see Tony gettin' respect, but this "ladder" is apparently just Sekou Smith's opinion. Or that's what it says on the page:
The Race to the MVP Ladder is a weekly look at our favorite to walk away with the Maurice Podoloff Trophy (aka the NBA MVP award). The rankings are written by Sekou Smith of NBA.com's HangTime blog, Hang Time podcast and The Beat fame. If you have an issue with the Ladder, or have a question or comment for Sekou, send him an e-mail. You can also follow him on Twitter.

I agree Tony is on fire this year, but I don't see how this is a "ladder" of anything more than one sportswriter's rankings. A bit misleading tbh.
