However, what if you're one of the best owners in sports and you wonder out loud if the Lakers should amnesty Kobe to free up some flexibility both financially and with their roster? ESPN Dallas says that's exactly what Dallas Mavericks' owner Mark Cuban said on the "Ben and Skin" radio show:

“If you look at their payroll, even if Dwight (Howard) comes back, you've got to ask the question: Should they amnesty Kobe?” Cuban said during an appearance on ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM's “Ben and Skin Show.”

“So I'm just saying that hypothetically. When I say amnesty Kobe, I don't think they'd do it, but they've got some choices to make. Now, they're in a big market, but they're still limited. The Knicks, the same thing. Boston, same thing.”

143m....u can buy 1/3 of a team with t hat sort of money

it just doesnt make fkn sense

currently 6-7 teams will be paying the super tax, does that mean the windfall for the other teams under the cap gets to collect that tax revenue...lame cause jordan fields a shit team every year and continues to collect that money

That's just crazy talk. Sorry, he may not be able to lead the team to a great record but he's still Kobe Bryant. Give him a last second shot to win a game and opposing fans sh*t their pants.

Bryant will still make them a lot more money than they will pay in tax...so no.

It would make the franchise into way more of a laughingstock than they are now. They already have tons of cap flexibility for the summer of 2014 and wouldn't gain much for 2013 by doing it, so the amnesty would be insanely stupid. Cuban's just talking shit.

Never gonna happen. Kobe could average 2 points on 5% shooting and he'd still bring in 50 million worth of merchandise sales for the Lakers.

He's the biggest star in the NBA and top 5 in all of sports. He's also still arguably the most feared player on the court. It would never happen.

It's cute because you actually believe it. Just like it's cute when a child fervently argues that Santa Claus exists.

:lol Spurs fans would shit themselves if they had to play Kobe in the 1st round. Kobe completely owns the Spurs and you can't deny that.

lakers are not likely to make the playoffs this year and even if they do make the playoffs with luck, they would get eliminated in no more than 5 games in the first round whether it's against spurs or OKC. you see any chance the lakers could survive with nash defending parker or westchuck :lol

As a Spurs fan, I would LOVE a first round matchup with the Fakes and sweep that nasty ass franchise to deliver a payback statement. Gimme the Clips in round 2 for good lube in that LA ass.

Not to mention the huge hit they take with their fanbase. Kobe is just as revered as any Laker great by their fans. He's still performing at a high level. It's not like Hakeem on the Raptors/Willie Mays on the Mets running on fumes.

From the perspective of winning basketball games (particularly in the playoffs), amnestying Kobe would definitely benefit the Lakers.

From a business perspective, it isn't so clear cut. A lot of money has been sunk into marketing Kobe as the premier basketball player of LA, whether or not it is warranted. It wouldn't be easy to dislodge the chucker from the supportive collective consciousness of the city.

According to your logic the spurs should amnesty the TOSB jim since he fails to deliver from both a financial and championship perspective for years.

Nah, championships are won via whole-team involvement and stout defense. The spurs as a whole haven't lived up to expectations, but Tim has done his part to bring them closer to the goal.

See the last few years' Lakers playoff series for what happens when an individual thinks they can do it all on their own to the point of excluding teammates. Game 7 of the 2010 finals is a great exemplar of the beginning of the end of the Lakers' Gasol-led dynasty, and disastrous transition to another mid-2000s-esque Kobe-ball team.

nigga walked for bigger $ and i can understand his decision. he would love to stay in dallas but was sacrificed for the chance of building the triple D dynasty. plus TC had a history of bad feet and getting engaged to him on a long contract would look very risky, cuban is a fucking businessman so he has every reason pick the less venturous option imho

they did let him walk but it was not like they traded they best player away only because he couldn't co-exist with a streaky whining bitch on the same squad, in exchange for a bag of trashes

Most unimpressive trip-doub I've seen. The Mavericks missed so many fuckin' shots, there was plenty of rebounds to grab, and over half of Kirby's assists came from basic passes to open shooters. Nothing special.

And with Kirby's "resurgence" this year, still behind Duncan in PER. Like always.

Also trails in Finals MVPs. But you already knew that.

Very meaningful vendetta, so much that Kobe coached himself to 47 minutes in a 20 point blowout win. :lol

You might say, he is obsessed with it.
