Contemplating LGA 2011

I have a fine computer for doing everything I need, but every now and then, I think about seriously upgrading. Is there a good, better, best when it comes to LGA 2011 board performance, or is it pretty much just the expansion options one wants?

what socket are you on now? 1155? if you are then there is probably little benefit for you to upgrade to 2011

do you need:
1: a 6 core cpu? more cache? (the majority of us don't)
2. more than 32gb of memory? quad channel?
3. extra PCIe lanes? (do you have a quad gpu set up?)

if you answered no to the above, you aren't going to see a noticeable real life performance increase to 1155. if your computer is only used for everyday tasks, 2011 isn't going to provide any extra benefit in single threaded apps which don't need more cores/mem/cache.

another thing to consider is that intels next cpu 'haswell' will be on a new socket LGA 1150, if you are looking for an upgrade i'd wait till it is released later this year.

I'll be moving up from an LGA775. E6300 processor.

No, I don't need any of that. I don't need my Trans Am either.

I figure a good CPU and motherboard can be had for under $1k, and I don't know how much memory runs these days.

well if you've got the cash, go for it.

i'd still recommend you wait just a bit longer for haswell, but for an upgrade right now LGA 1155 is you're best bet.

as far as mobo's go, the more you pay the more features you get. better power control, better onboard audio etc etc...just compare the specs and figure out what suits you best

That's what I was asking. It used to be that the motherboard also affected the performance, and could be the weakest link. Seems like the CPU used on these newest boards control almost everything. That seems to me to leave motherboard choices to number of slots, memory expandability, drive connections, etc.

Are they all equal otherwise?

pretty much nail on the head there, the cpu/gpu(if you game) is where you want to invest.

you can get a very good cpu/mobo combo for underneath $400 easily. memory is cheap as chips grab as much as you want, 8gb-16gb is the common amount at the moment

1150 will be "current" for at least 2 years, supporting the new 2014 intel processors as well. so right now, it's worth the wait, IMO
