And Samsung is definitely a company to be worried about. They are going to soon be far more pervasive than Apple considering how much of the manufacturing process these days is owned by Sammy. Fortunately they seem to be much more innovation focused and open-source friendly than their draconian tech brethren, but obviously that could change once they grab enough of the market.

Believe it or not, I disagree. Most people aren't like you or I, I don't think a statistically significant portion of the population would swing toward Samsung if they went pure android. XDA forums and their ilk would be on NERDRAGE alert, but that is what... 2 % of the smartphone buying public?

http://www.theverge.com/2013/2/28/4040348/google-cfo-products-in-motorola-pipeline-arent-wow-by-google-standards

If you were hoping to see a revelatory smartphone from Motorola in the near future, you might want to tone down those expectations. Google's Chief Financial Officer and Senior Vice President Patrick Pichette today said that products in Motorola's pipeline "aren't 'wow' by Google standards." The surprisingly honest admission came during Pichette's session at the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference. When questioned on where things stand with Motorola at the moment, Pichette didn't mince words. "The case with Motorola is that we've inherited a pipeline," he said, which Google executives have made clear in the past. Unfortunately, it sounds as if there's plenty of runway left. "Motorola has a great set of products, but they're not really like 'wow' by Google standards. Dennis Woodside and his team have inherited 18 months of pipeline that we have to drain right now."

Recent releases from that pipeline including the Droid RAZR Maxx HD and Droid RAZR M have been met with positive feedback from consumers and critics, but Google's most avid fans have made it clear they expect to see something more. However, Pitchette's words suggest a Motorola-branded device with true Google inspiration is several months away at best.

Looks like it'll be a good phone but since I own a S3 I don't think I will feel compelled to upgrade. The big question for me is how thin they managed to make the edges, if they make the S4 smaller or the same size as the S3 with a bigger screen, it'd be pretty nice.

But if I buy anything samsung this year it will most likely their new flagship plasma tv, the F8500...

I'm only likely switching because as a someone who roots, my current phone is useless and I detest sense (my S2 is smooth on CM10 than my X+ is on sense).

For all of you Note III fans:

I think you might be interested in this. (http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/15/samsung-galaxy-s-4-game-pad-supports-6-3-inch-devices/)

We noticed that Samsung's planned Game Pad accessory has an expanding clamp designed to accommodate screen sizes larger than the 5-inch Galaxy S 4 being used as its showcase, but it wasn't clear just how far it would go. Now that there's an official accessory page on the GS4's microsite, Samsung is unusually specific about the limit: 6.3 inches. That's an odd choice of display dimension, as it's bigger than the 5.5-inch Galaxy Note II and smaller than the 7-inch Galaxy Tab line. Samsung could just be hedging its bets, so we wouldn't make too many presumptions. It's often wise to give yourself a little headroom. However, a 6.3-inch screen would dovetail with unconfirmed Korea Times rumors that the next-generation Galaxy Note phone would use a similar size and give the 6.1-inch Ascend Mate a run for its money. We won't be convinced until we can see such a device for ourselves -- for all we know, it could be an extra-tiny version of a future Galaxy Tab.

Don't get caught up in the octo-core hype of the international version.

You'll never get to use more than 4 cores at any time, because that SoC is divided into 4 'low-performance' cores and 4 'high-performance' cores, switching between the two depending on what the phone is doing at the time. Most likely, you're going to get similar benchmark scores between the US Snapdragon versions and this.

In addition, considering the difficulty community devs have had with getting custom ROMs to work with Exynos processors in the past year, I'd actually be happier to get the version with the Snapdragon processor. At least Qualcomm is much easier to develop custom ROMs on.

Many devs, including CM have said they refuse to develop for the S4.

I doubt there will be much issue with development for the One.

why are they refusing to develop for s4?

Devs were mad with the S3 international devlopment (Exynos chip) because not all sources were ever released, leading to bugs with camera and project butter. S3 North American (Qualcomm) didn't have such an issue.

Many devs, including CM have said they refuse to develop for the S4.

I think the rest of the team came out and said that statement wasn't supposed to speak for all of them, and that he was voicing his fustrations with the Exynos version.

In any case, this would only affect 'official' ports of CM; as only as CM sources exist they'll definately be ports of the ROM. And with this phone probably sellng 50+ million, I doubt even the whole CM team would have this stance.

HTC always makes development a bitch, OTOH (however it's better with Qualcomm chips).

Drachen

why are they refusing to develop for s4?

They aren't refusing to develop for the S4. There is a team (team hacksung I think) that said that they are not going to dev. Koush a developer that has developed clockworkmod recovery, carbon, desk sms, etc and a friend of Steve (Cyanogen) posted that he saw steve with an S4 with CM 10.1 on it about 2 weeks ago. The problem seems to be with the exynos. Samsung is close sourcing the libs and drivers for the exynos. The us variant, however has the qualcomm s600 in it. Qualcomm is very forthcoming with its development and the impression that I get from a post on G+ that steve made was that as long as qualcomm silicone is in it, there will likely be development.

Edit: steve never said he wasn't going to dev for the s4. at all. In fact his only real comment on the subject was that CM doesn't commit or not commit to a phone. You will know it is going to be supported when its supported.

Drachen

with all of that being said, HTC makes it a complete bitch to get s-off which gives full access to the bootloader (necessary to dev). Also, HTC is incredibly slow to release source too so you have similar problems as with the exynos.

Yup. I don't think any HTC device with a Tegra chipset got S-off. Considering sources for the N.A. X+ were so reidiculously limited that no CM exists, I don't want to eal with them anymore. I'd wait for the next Nexus if I could, but probably will grab the S4.

Define amazing and what was your last phone?

Last phone was an S2, so it is a pretty big leap.

Aesthetically, the phone feels very nice in hand (i do have big hands though), it's really light and looks a lot nicer than the S3 IMO.

The screen is incredible. Obviously the thing runs without lag and I've found the battery life to be really great. Call reception appears much improved over my S2. 4G is great.

For me, those are the important things - Battery life, screen quality, lightness and comfort in hand... the extra bits and pieces (smart scroll etc) are cool too.

GS4 is slightly superior in some ways, mainly some slightly superior specs as well as having a removable battery and SD card slot. but the HTC One is built of noticeably higher quality, has amazing speaker sound, and actually looks like a pretty phone.

Ideally, a combination of HTC build quality and speakers with S4 features and specs would be nice. Between the two, I'd still pick the S IV, unless the HTC One is S-OFF and releases its sources (I'm not sure). If I wanted a good phone that locks me down, I would've bought an iPhone.5.

If that's the case I might have to take a look at it, tbh. Only concern is that the 4MP camera is simply underkill, even though it has a good low-light sensor. And of course, I've still got a bad taste in my mouth from the X+.

Why on earth do phone speakers dazzle you? To me, they're kinda like TV speakers. They're pretty useless, they're tinny, and they're always hooked up to an AV receiver. Do you seriously listen to your phone speakers that much? I've maybe heard mine a handful of times on any of my smart phones that I've had about a total of 4-5 years. Maybe its just me.

I'd actually hold off on getting a Nexus 7 now, with Google I/O just around the corner. Rumor is that an upgraded Nexus 7 will be unveiled then.

That being said, it's a damn good 7-inch tablet, especially for the price.

What are those alternatives?

Do you have ASUS tab?

1) The Nexus 10 is probably the best non-iPad option out there when it comes to 10-inch tablets.

2) The ASUS TF300 and TF700 Transformer tablets are also worth considering, because of the keyboard dock option. However, if you're not looking to get the dock, the Nexus 10 is the better choice by far.

So far, the S IV is taking a beating from the HTC One in reviews. It's getting beat out in two glaring categories, camera and build quality. But performance-wise the S IV trumps the One.

I really hope they'd change the build quality for the Note III. Samsung is running out of excuses to stick to the polycarbonate material for their flagship phones.

At least not now

First things first ....

As you are an Android noob, get familiar with the OS, the way it works, customization, terminology, etc ....

Then after a few weeks or months you can root if you want

(but no you dont have to root in order to tweak / customize .... rooting allows for further tweaking, but you are good to go with what you have out of the box)

Fuck, CM has released a new kernel on the One S that requires the user to update to the latest carrier firmware JB update

That means relocking, unlocking, RUU, adb fastboot and fruitloop

All the future AOSP rom versions, or most of them, will be running on that kernel (since most of those roms have CM)

They say if you dont do all those shitty steps, your phone will be caught in a bootloop.

Fuck that shit, I'm not going to do all that - however, some users have successfully updated to the new kernel without doing all that annoying shit

Rooting is mainly beneficial for customization and OS tuning. Custom ROMS, overclocking cpu's, deleting bloatware...nuts and bolts kinda stuff.

Heres a good site for info on rooting and other mods for the S4.

Not really, since Samsung also tries to backport some of the Touchwiz features of its latest flagship onto the previous flagship.

Unless you REALLY need a hardware feature on the S4 (such as LTE if your S3 is a non-LTE model), you're most likely better off waiting for the S5.

Or do you need to use a Touchwiz based ROM to keep all those features?

Air View, Gestures, etc are all TW features. I basically switched to CM 10.1 after a day of TW, so I didn't really give it a chance, tbh. Only feature I'd like to have back is the IR blaster (AOSP 4.3 rumored to have drivers).

I was actually gonna flash to a modded TW to tinker around with today, tbh. Wanna see how the camera app and stuff compare.

I got a white one, think it looks much better (I typically side with black phones).

Oh and I played with a Sense based ROM the other day; based on Sense 5

So basically the HTC One interface; those camera features are really nice ....... lol AOSP camera

I didnt keep it because it's a fairly recent ROM so it still has some bugs, and it's 4.1.2, not 4.2.2 (since HTC is always late with OS updates)

Yeah - I installed it last night (zipaligned, deodexed, rooted stock TW).
It's not really a hog on resources, tbh (at boot 800-900MB of RAM used vs. 600-700MB for CM). Phone is probably just as snappy as CM even while using Nova Launcher.
But got damn it's pretty ugly in terms of notification center, menu screen, etc. It barely looks better than the TW I had for Gingerbread on my S2. I fucked around with air gestures and eye scroll etc. and the only one I'd use is Smart Stay (keeping screen on by watching it). Need more time with the camera too see how much better it is.

Overall, I need at least a re-skinned TW ROM or I'll go back to CM.

Yeah I used to have skinned TW ROMs. I think one is in early development, but it's stupid they made a minor difference in the USA and Canadian versions of the S4 (so requires a separate ROM or a patch). On top of that the US version still has its bootloader locked :lol, so it requires a special hack on all ROMs.

Magna Carta Holy Grail :cry :cry :cry

Samsung bought a million downloads of the album, for $5 each, to be given away on July 4 — five days before the album’s official release — through a mobile application, JAY Z Magna Carta, on certain Samsung models. It’s an ugly piece of software.

It demands permissions, including reading the phone’s status and identity, which made some users, notably the rapper Killer Mike, suspicious: Does Jay-Z really need to log my calls? It also gathers “accounts,” the e-mail addresses and social-media user names connected to the phone. Those permissions are often part of a typical app package. This one got worse.

When installed, it demanded a working log in to Facebook or Twitter and permission to post on the account. “We would like fans to share the content through social networking sites,” a Jay-Z spokeswoman said by e-mail. (E-mail to Samsung Mobile’s customer service address for the app was returned as undeliverable throughout Wednesday.) But the app was more coercive.

then again u can always buy from a grey importer which only has 1yr warranty (100bucks cheaper) compared to local brick and mortar stores where they give u 2 YR samsung warranty...stuck between is the extra warranty worth it for 100bucks, since when do anyone ever got any breakdowns with their smartphones?

Simple, I used motochopper until I sent my phone in. When I got it back i decided to get CF's version.

From what I understand, motochopper is an exploit and can be patched anytime (some phones with OTA update I think were already blocked). CF acceses the partition to root and apparently works forever.

Check for dual booting here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2447534)
