That's significantly below what he could get in the open market. Time for the team to actually use the flexibility he provides to surround him with better players. He's taken below market value pay his entire career and in recent years the Patriots haven't used it well at all.

Is Tom doing this in order to keep Wesley E. Welker?

Probably more to keep Talib and Vollmer while adding Ed Reed and Dwayne Bowe tbh

......Brady had Welker in mind when signing a cap-friendly extension. Brady wants to ensure the Patriots remain title contenders, and that includes keeping his No. 1 target in the fold. Rest assured Brady expects his team to make an even stronger push for Welker before he becomes an unrestricted free agent in March.

Oh, wow. The deal is fully guaranteed. That might be the biggest fully-guaranteed deal in league history.
@AlbertBreer: Brady deal converts his old deal into, essentially, a five-year, $60 million contract. And all $60 million is guaranteed.

Right, because there's NOOOOOOOOOOOOO fuckin way a head coach would hate a player for dropping a wide open game winning catch in the superbowl. Mono's the only Patriots fan in the world who hates Welker for that!
I'd be OK with bringing Welker back if they signed him to a Brandon Lloyd type deal where he's getting 3-4mil a year while they bring in a real #1 receiver so Welker truly is a slot receiver. The problem still is that Brady can't help himself and will force the ball to Welker and treat him as a #1 target as long as he's here. OTOH, Welker is still really productive when he gets to play slot receiver. All of his drops/fuckups come when he has to run routes outside the numbers. If they have Welker, Lloyd, and a real #1 receiver it means the offense has enough weapons so it won't go to total shit once Gronk and Hernandez get their usual injuries.
Vollmer and Talib are higher priorities, and Arrington probably is too at this point since Denard might be headed to prison for a few years. It's amazing that even after all these 1st and 2nd round picks in the secondary, they're gonna be entering free agency with Ras-I Dowling as the #1 corner on the team. They better not move McCourty back to corner as that would open up another huge hole in the secondary at free safety.

Latest i've read is Dennard will likely only get 2-3 months and be back by training camp. Of course then a suspension is likely, although he wasn't in the NFL at the time of the incident, but tell that to Terrelle Pryor.

No leader in receptions has had the limited skill set of Welker, nor the QB mancrush to force it to him.

The Patriots message board I post on occassionally has plenty of people who echo our sentiment about Welker.
I don't think saying I want Welker restricted to a slot receiver role is really hating him either. He's proven that he can't be counted on as the #1 receiver and he's horribly effective outside the numbers, which is where he ends up going more in the playoffs when New England runs into good teams capable of shutting down the middle of the field.

He wouldn't get 7M a year in the open market so I don't see any reason to pay him that.
I'd also say Arrington is a higher priority than Welker, and similar to Welker he should be brought back exclusively as a slot corner as he's atrocious in coverage out wide. The difference is there's no depth at corner behind Arrington while Brady has made Edelman a productive slot receiver in the past.
They need to establish continuity in the secondary so they're not going into another season with a mishmash of young talent and no carved out roles for anyone. Assuming Denard will be back, they should still draft another corner so that way if Dowling actually shows up next season it'll be a bonus but not something that's expected.

i doubt he wouldn't get 7m on the open market.. it is true that teams are very cap tight this year, but some teams have obvious needs at wr and wes is among the best.. i don't want to hear about arrington tbh, he needs to be gone asap.

I could see Wes getting 7mil a year on the open market. Hopefully he takes a cue from Brady. It's ok though, we'll probably draft someone in the secondary that will be good the last half of next year and suck thereafter, and a WR in the 2nd round that will just suck outright.

Wes was garbage before he went to a team/system/QB that turned Troy Brown into a 1200 yard receiver, and he'll be garbage after he leaves said team. Before someone decides to go off on a tangent about how he had the most productive 600 yard receiving season in the history of football during his last year in Miami therefore he wasn't "garbage" that's irrelevant to the fact he didn't have a snowball's chance in hell of ever sniffing $7M as a Dolphin. Teams aren't gonna pay $7,000,000 a year for a 5'8" system product in his 30s who can't catch important passes in the playoffs.

tbh these arguments are not convincing me... it is true he is in his 30s, but last time we went for the big name reciever, he spent more than a year to learn the playbook, also welker is not injury prone and can do a little bit of everything, not just be a wr.. plus he's wes welker, one of the three biggest wide reciever names.

The momentum of the entire game shifted with that Welker drop. Not saying he's 100% to blame, but going up 20-7 will affect Baltimore mentally more than punting at 13-7 and giving them a shot at taking the lead right there.

Welker also missed a deep ball in that game due to being a little midget. Any normal sized receiver would have gotten a big gain.

This is partly Brady's fault, his habit of forcing it to Wes has caused Welker to be way overvalued with those gaudy numbers that don't at all reflect where he really ranks. It's not just with Welker tho, Brady gets into a habit of forcing it to Gronk in the red zone even when he's double covered, and that would be just as annoying except Gronk actually makes a play on alot of those bad passes.

At first glance it appeared that way, but had Brady hit Welker in stride the safety would've had an easier play on the ball. The throw was by design, imo. Still a difficult play, but he got both hands on it. The Baltimore drop, however, was brutal and the game was never the same after that. Even if that drive stalls after he catches it, New England likely tacks on a FG and goes up 2 scores.

It only appeared to be a difficult play because of Welker's physical limitations. Any other receiver allegedly worth 7-9 mil a year and that's a routine catch.

We didn't go out because of Welker's specific drops, we went out the last two years because we relied on Welker to be a #1 receiver when he isn't.
They couldn't get any run game going because their best receiver is only a threat short and over the middle, so it's easy to stack the box.

well two years ago our D was laughable at best, so apparently the offense was more than good enough... what i'm saying, is that with a healthy hernandez-gronkowski combo, there is no need for a big name deep threat as there is plenty of space available for wes to make plays. We need to draft a young quick reciever and i would like to see edelman back, but the pressing concern is not there tbh.. again, with wes-aron-rob-brady and a capable O-line, there is no defense, and that is with no running game... keep the core, get everyone healthy and focus on D.

I don't see how you guys can say they relied on Wes to be a #1 in the Ravens game or that they forced passes into him, when both Lloyd and Hernandez had more targets (14, 14) than Wes (12).
8 rec 100+ and a TD on 12 attempts to him.

I want to drop him because his skill set is the easiest to replace. There's a ton of quality slot receivers. Welker is the best of the bunch, no doubt about it, but he's still just a glorified slot receiver. You don't win titles if a slot receiver is your top WR. You have a better shot with guys who make plays downfield and can handle a less than perfect pass. Wes has proven he can't.

I think woodhead is as good as gone with demps coming back and already good depth which is good since I hate him a lot more than welker or Edelman. I'd also take Edelman back as long as he's the 5th best receiver on the team who rarely sees the field outside of special teams.

Possibly, in which case that might mean Belichick lets him go completely because he's made it clear he's not willing to break the bank for Welker. I don't think he values Welker anymore than Lloyd and thus isn't willing to pay him much more. The guy I'm worried about getting a huge contract from another team is Vollmer. There are a lot of teams entering free agency with abysmal offensive lines. The one saving grace with Vollmer is that the free agent market is loaded at tackle when in another year he might be the best tackle available.
The only scenario where they go after a big name receiver is if they cut Lloyd and/or lose Welker which is why I'll be worried if they resign him. The chances of them keeping Lloyd, resigning Welker and also going after a big name at receiver are very slim.
Raven, I know Arrington was horrible last year but what do you suggest as a better option? He was good when he played as the nickel and only covered slots. I agree wholeheartedly that he's not a starting caliber corner and if Patricia is gonna keep trying him out wide then I'm in the same boat as you, but he fits the role of nickel corner who's also a beast on special teams. If there's a team out there that falls in love with the high interception number he had in 2011, then let him leave. Fortunately he was bad enough last year where he shouldn't cost too much.

i don't know, i don't know that much about football as to pretend to be a legit manager, i don't like chung and i don't like arrington, i do like ninkovich though... bottom line, among the bigger names, i would let go only those two. if we can't get a deal done, then just draft the replacements..

Don't worry about Chung, can't imagine he'll be resigned. Ninkovich will stay. Arrington will likely stay; only way he doesn't is if we draft a cornerback/safety in the first or second round.
