Redd needs to go Cleveland, then. The Bucks are always going to be the Bucks, I don't see that changing anytime soon. At least he might have a chance at contention playing next to Lebron, and he obviously won't be missing out on any dollar signs.

Even when the Bucks played great in recent years past, they never made it beyond the first or second round. I admit that I don't care enough about Milwaukee to know exactly what they've got planned for this offseason, but I can't see it being enough to turn them into a powerhouse.

And yes, the Cavs did have a royal implosion after the All-Star Game, but that's just because two guys (Lebron and Z) can't make the playoffs by themselves. If Ferry can put in a third consistent threat and add some valuable roles players, the Cavaliers could be as dangerous as any other team in the East.

You add a guy like Redd to the Cavs, and it changes what Cleveland can do drastically. You let him stay with the Bucks, and it will just be more of the same thing.

CLEVELAND -- Unrestricted free agent shooting guard Michael Redd is scheduled to visit the Cavaliers this week, possibly as early as tomorrow.

Sources say the Cavaliers made Redd a five-year, $72 million offer when free agency began last Friday. The Bucks also made him a six-year, $94 million offer -- the maximum allowable.

The fact that Redd and his agents, the Poston brothers, didn't immediately accept the Bucks' hefty proposal gives the Cavaliers hope. However, very seldom in professional sports do players leave $22 million on the table and sign elsewhere.

Both sides are hoping Redd makes a decision sometime this week. But sources indicate he'll likely wait to see what the Bucks do with their coaching vacancy. The only known candidate still in the running is Cleveland native Flip Saunders.

When the 6-foot-6, 214-pound Redd does visit, both LeBron James and Eric Snow are expected to be part of his welcoming party.

If Redd decides to re-sign with the Bucks on July 23, the first day free agents can sign contracts, the Cavaliers might make a lucrative offer to SuperSonics guard Ray Allen. He's still negotiating with Seattle, which supposedly hasn't budged from a five-year, $75 million offer. (obviously this was written before the Sonics and Allen came to terms)

The Cavaliers are also trying to re-sign center Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who reportedly wants at least four years guaranteed, maybe five. The Cavaliers original offer was for three years and under $10 million a season, a source said.

Years could be more of a problem than money with the 7-3, 260-pounder.

The Cavaliers reportedly are not interested in a sign-and-trade with Z.

Other than Atlanta, the other teams interested in Ilgauskas are armed with only the $4.9 million mid-level exception. The Cavaliers might be willing to pay almost twice that figure.

The Cavaliers also reportedly made calls to Bulls restricted free agents Eddy Curry and Tyson Chandler.

One report said the Cavaliers want to save at least $6 million in cap space to out-bid other teams that have only the mid-level to spend later in the summer. Several very good players will be falling through the cracks and be forced to play for the mid-level this season.

Deal is for five years, agent says

Ray Allen was wooed by LeBron James, Mike Dunleavy and the Atlanta Hawks for the last five days. In the end, he decided that there was no place like home.

Allen's agent, Lon Babby, said Tuesday morning that Allen has agreed to terms with the Sonics on a five-year deal. The contract would be for $80 million over five years with an additional $5 million in performance bonuses.

"We did wander in the desert for a while, before we got to the promise land," Babby said in a conference call with reporters. "When Ray became a free agent and we had a chance to explore opportunities, we were able to report back to the Sonics on what the market was dictating and they essentially responded accordingly."

Allen can't sign a contract until the league lifts its player movement moratorium. That ban is expected to be lifted on July 22, though there's been talk around the league that it could be pushed back as much as week.

The move should have major ramifications for both the Sonics and the rest of the free agent market.

Allen earned about $14 million this season, and the two sides tried to negotiate a new deal during the regular season, but could not agree. Both sides started talks again after the playoffs.

"It took a long, long time, but except for momentary lapses, it was a completely amicable process," Babby said. "I think Ray comes back to Seattle with a piece of mind now that he's seen what is out there and decided the best place for him is in Seattle."

Now that the Sonics have re-signed Allen, look for them to get aggressive in bringing back the rest of the pieces, including head coach Nate McMillan, that helped the Sonics secure a third seed in the West.

The Sonics are also trying to re-sign free agents Vladimir Radmanovic, Antonio Daniels, Reggie Evans, Jerome James and Ronald Murray.

Allen's agreement with the Sonics will also have affect on a number of other free agent two guards looking for new deals. The Clippers and Hawks had made Allen a top priority, and the Cavs had Allen as their back-up plan should Michael Redd decide to return to Milwaukee.

With Allen now out of the picture, expect both Los Angeles and the Atlanta to turn to the next top available free agent guards -- Joe Johnson and Larry Hughes. Johnson is a restricted free agent who has garnered a large amount of interest around the league. However, teams have been slow to offer him a contract because of the Suns ability (and stated intention) to match any deal.

Hughes is an unrestricted free agent who, statistically, was at the top of his class. However, it's been widely assumed that he'll re-sign with the Wizards. The Wizards can offer Hughes an extra year and more money than either the Hawks or Clippers.

After those two, the market drops off pretty dramatically. Bobby Simmons, Marko Jaric, Cuttino Mobley, Latrell Sprewell and Gerald Wallace are the next best guards on the board.
