Food, bars, outdoors stuff?

I grew up in Ft. Worth. Sundance Square is pretty decent nightlife. There's the Flying Saucer in the old 8.0's space. The Reata serves food and has an outdoor bar with a deck patio with great views of the Sundance Square. They've put in a bunch of chain, Dallas-y type stuff like Boomer Jack's, The Library and Mi Cocina's but it's a much more laid-back atmosphere than Dallas.

West 7th street is the other major nightlife area in Ft. Worth just west of downtown. In my opinion it's super douchey, but Fred's Cafe and Magnolia Motor Lounge are worth checking out.

There's the cultural district (Kimbell and Modern Art Museum) that's also worth doing. The Fort Worth Zoo is pretty good for a city of its size.

The hipster area would probably be Near Southside just south of downtown and the hospital district. Twenty-five years ago it's where you went during the day for a doctor's appointment and at night for a streetwalking hooker, but now it's been gentrified. On a much, much smaller scale it's similar to what has happened to East Austin. Magnolia Avenue has some cool bars and restaurants (Boiled Owl Tavern, Chat Room Pub, Yucatan Taco Stand, Shinjuku Station, Cat City Grill, Ellerbee's Fine Foods, The Usual if you like expensive cocktails)

Outdoors type activities - There's the Trinity Trails (multiple entry points throughout city) for biking, running or walking. I would also recommend the Ft. Worth Water Gardens and the Botanical Gardens off University Avenue. If you have a boat or want to rent one, there's Lake Worth on the northwest side of the city.

If you're there on a Saturday afternoon, the Rahr Brewery is definitely worth doing. For $10 a head, you get three drink tickets and your own commemorative glass. They have food trucks and sometimes live music.

Burgers - Fred's Cafe, Kincaid's, Jon's Grille in the main strip near TCU.
Sushi - Shinjuku Station
Expensive Fine Dining - Ellerbe's Fine Foods on Magnolia, Bonnell's Texas Cuisine off Bryant Irvin
BBQ - Cousin's on McCart Avenue, Angelo's on White Settlement Road, Cooper's near the Stockyards
Tex-Mex, Mexican - Dos Molina's near the Stockyards, Benito's on Magnolia Avenue, Esperanza's, Tres Joses off White Settlement Road, Salsa Fuego off Alta Mere Drive
Vegetarian - Spiral Diner on Magnolia Avenue
Expensive Steak House - Del Frisco's
Cheap but good steaks - M&M's steakhouse

Joe T. Garcia's is an overrated tourist trap. You'll get better Mexican food at Chili's or the Don Miguel Frozen Dinners at the grocery store. It's all about the outdoor patio. I don't really get the appeal of the Stockyards aside from a few restaurants (Dos Molinas, Cooper's). It's a tourist trap as well.

I've lived in Dallas for five years now. As far as nightlife goes, Uptown is super douchey and epitomizes a lot of negative stereotypes about Dallas. But if you like really strong drinks in a meat-market atmosphere, go to The Loon. Everything north of 635 is just one giant suburb with the same chain restaurants, big box retail and chain bars that you can find anywhere else.

Outdoors stuff - the new Klyde Warren Deck Park is pretty cool just north of downtown on top of Woodall Rodgers. There's also White Rock Lake and the Katy Trail.

Burgers - Good Friend in Lakewood (also has a really good beer selection), Twisted Root
Sushi - Zen Sushi in Bishop Arts
Tex-Mex, Mexican - Pepe and Mito's in Deep Ellum, Veracruz Cafe in Bishop Arts, Herrera's Cafe on Maple.
Other restaurants and bars - Jonathan's in Oak Cliff, The Common Table near Uptown, Nova in Oak Cliff,
Italian - Lucia's in Bishop Arts ( pricey and probably need a reservation), Angelo's Italian Grill in Lakewood
Pizza - Eno's Pizza Tavern in Bishop Arts (also has a great beer selection), Serious Pizza in Deep Ellum, Louie's off Henderson

The Bishop Arts District is cool and worth checking out.

So... we spent the last week or so in DFW. Neither of us had been there in a while, and obviously we had never taken the kids there.

Overall, it was really fun.

Some overall thoughts...

I thought there was a lot of street/freeway construction in San Antonio, but got damn -- Fort Worth's street construction is crazy.
We did a bunch of tourist-y stuff in Fort Worth (including our kids taking pictures on longhorns -- see below) plus the zoo and children's museum there is awesome. But I think the best part was Trinity Park. Our kids really had a blast there.

Regarding Dallas... it's freakin' crowded downtown. I mean, I know that every downtown is crowded but we went to Perot Museum of Nature & Science on Sunday and it seemed like every kid in the city was there. Our kids had to box out to get good positioning in the children's museum play area.

Feeding the giraffes at the zoo was great for the kids, as well as a lot of other stuff we did. Oh... and the hotel suite was super posh, but nowadays, hotels shouldn't charge for internet. Good thing we didn't pay for it (the hotel stay or the internet). I think asking people to pay $20 a night for internet is ridiculous.

Chris Childs Talks About the Time He Punched Kobe Bryant, Says He Could Have Hit Him Harder (http://www.complex.com/sports/2015/12/chris-childs-talks-about-time-he-punched-kobe-bryant)

DEC 16, 2015

“He was a young player at the time. He had to challenge someone. I happened to be that guy.

“A couple of times going around screens, I played tight defense, it’s physical down there and he hit me with an elbow. I’m fine with that, but don’t do it above the shoulders.’’

Childs said he asked the officials: “Are you going to do anything about this? They put their hands up: ‘What you want me do?’

“‘No problem, I’ll take care of that.’ I said: ‘Young fella, do that again, there’s going to be a problem.’ [Kobe said]: ‘What are you going to do?’

“We go around the pick and he hit me again. By that time, enough is enough. I’m back home. This young guy is trying me. I walk up to him — if you watch it, he hits me with a little shoulder. He’s 6-6. I’m 6-3 at the time. I got to get him off of me. I give him a little head nudge. From that point on, it’s game on. I took a few boxing lessons. I know how to defend myself.

“When I hit him, I didn’t want to hurt him. I knew he was an up-and-coming guy. I remember back in the day watching Kermit Washington hit Rudy T [with an infamous punch during a game in 1977]. I didn’t want to get that label of hurting a guy’s career. So I just happened to tap him and let him know you’re trying the wrong guy.’"
