We Need Statistics on Mr. Ginobili: Second Night of Back-to-Back

I have noticed that his worst ever is the 4th night in a 4 games in 5 nights scenario - he almost can't move. I suspect if you plotted his performance on every-other-night vs. back to back nights this season it would be startling. I remember he played in 2 "4 in five night" sequences earlier in the season, and the 4th game he looked stiff as a board and had trouble passing. I wonder why this would be? Don't get me wrong, he is my favorite of favorites, and is must-see-TV. He is a walking Hall-of-famer in my eyes. I wonder if there's some supplement he could take (legal, of course) that would help with his obvious soreness in the second night of back-to-backs. Has anybody else noticed this? I wouldn't be surprised if his assist/turnover ratio is more than halved. BTW today should be a happy day for him - The New Pope is from Argentina.

Ginobili needs to be limited to 18-20 minutes a game like he was when he was battling his quad injury.

Yeah, Ginobili is an atheist but that doesn't mean he wouldn't feel a sense of pride that the new Pope is Argentinian.

And as for the topic at hand, yeah ESPN has basic stats for the 2nd night of a back to back, and Ginobili's stats are pretty awful across the board. Less points. Terrible efficiency. Less assists and more turnovers. Pretty much what you'd expect based on the eye test.

I agree there is a decline in his second nights on back-to-backs but he is still ranked 24th in the league in PER (above the likes of Bosh and Curry) so first nights must still be holding up well.

Good point. Luckily back-to-backs are quite rare in the playoffs. The only ones I can remember happen early in the second round if one or both of the first-round series go long.

There are normally no B2Bs in the playoffs. Last year was an anomaly because of the shortened season.

If I remember right, the Spurs played a b2b in 2006, game 6 vs. the Kings and game 1 vs. the Mavs. League-wide I think there's about 1 playoff b2b every 3-4 years, but I am curious about the actual number.

Ginobili's best shooting percentages come on back-to-backs, actually, though his rebounds and assists are lower and his FT% is bad. Look up the stats, people. Geez.

It is interesting that, for the most part, his worst games come with 2-3 days rest. His best come with a single game's rest. This may have to do with the fact that the 2-3 days rest sample size is small, though, and a few of those games (especially 3+ days rest) have featured Manu coming back from injury.

Spurs guard Manu Ginobili was eating lunch Wednesday when he found out he’d been bumped down the list of most famous people from Argentina. Move over Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi, Eva Peron and, yes, Ginobili too.
Now the Pope is Argentine, too.
Ginobili pronounced himself surprised and proud at the news that 76-year-old Buenos Aires native Jorge Mario Begoglio — from here on out to be known as Pope Francis — had been named the new worldwide leader of the Catholic church.
“It is incredible,” Ginobili said after this morning’s shootaround. “We were watching and when we heard the name I said, ‘What? Did we hear it right?’
“We were all in shock. The country is going crazy.”
Ginobili laughed at the new Pope’s suggestion that the church had gone to “the end of the world” to find him. Ginobili recalled a day early in his Spurs career, when he pointed out his home county on a globe for some of his curious new NBA teammates.
“They looked and said, ‘Wow, that’s way down there,” Ginobili said. “I said, ‘Yes, we are basically a few miles from Antarctica. “So yes, it is basically the end of the world.”
Ginobili believes the pontiff is about to put Argentina on the map in a way no sports star ever could.
“An Argentinean being in charge of a billion people is not something that happens often,” Ginobili said. “Catholicism is the main religion in my country and, of course, it is a big thing.”

Nah, Ginobili is an atheist. He's said so many times.

That would seem to suggest he needs more minutes to regain his rhythm. He did the same thing in '10. He didn't start playing consistently well till Pop started him and gave him alot of minutes. Pop's making the same mistake again. In an effort to protect Ginobili he's limiting his minutes. But it is short sighted since he won't consistently gain his rhythm. Start him and get DG used to playing of the bench.
