Its an insurance thing over there. I did not know and often wondered the same thing until just recently. When the meteor shot across Russian airspace and numerous dash cams picked it up (in epic fashion btw), it was finally explained why so many exist.

dash cams dont do shit to lower insurance, just like car alarms, if a thief wants ur car, he will take ur car no matter what shit you do to it, if he cant take it he would smash the shit out of it to be a writeoff

I assume it would be used as evidence for when someone runs into you or cuts you off making you hit the ditch.

It's a different situation in Russia than here. They have intention victims for insurance claims. The cams reduce the insurance rates for the drivers because they can keep from paying out fraudulent claims.
