For me it was 1999.

I knew about David in the mid 90s and maybe even a few other guys on the team but I was too young to care about watching sports at the time and I was more into guys like Jordan, Pippen, Kemp, and Barkley. I probably went into full analytical mode during 2002.

When Horry put Nash into wood and Stern ran Amare off long enough for ya's to gain the upper hand and then pretended to nap while the tired old shit bag Duncan left the bench.

That year.

Er, 2009/10 was the first season I watched. There's almost zero coverage in the UK so have to watch it all online. I think I missed the boat a little bit.

I just turned on the TV and Doc Rivers was talking about how they had to show them respect because they were the defending champs. I guess the Spurs were down at the half or something like that. I really do not remember.

Back in the mid 90s... There was no internet and no NBA game broadcast in France.

I was reading monthly magazines (5 majeur, Mondial Basket...). I remember a front page with Duncan prior to the 97 draft, introducing the new big thing from Wake Forest and became a fan ever since.

It became much easier to watch Spurs games on French TV when Parker was drafted

Mid 90's, on my first extended stay in the US... ESPN couldn't get enough of Jordan, and you basically had NBA overload. Really liked the Spurs from NBA Jam in the arcades, the Admiral was tits in that game.

Became a Spurs fan around '92/93 when I first started playing basketball in (Australian) Year 6/7, but became a much bigger fan when the internet coverage really picked up around '98/99 - which was perfect frikkin timing really :) Meant I got to enjoy the first championship a heck of a lot more.

Same, my family were glued to watching Chicago because of Michael. I'm always loyal to home state teams, so when I saw out San Antonio had a team (found out when the Bulls played them) I was so happy I now could have a legit favorite team since I only root for home state teams.. Spurs, Rangers, Cowboys, Texas A&M, etc.

Late 80s-early 90s. Not sure the exact year. My earliest basketball memory is Jordan dropping 63 on Boston. That's actually probably my first sport's memory, not including stuff like little league.

Early 80's, although it was hard to watch them consistently... Basketball was shown maybe once a week on tv and usually featured LA or Boston...

Watching games in 2002, but from 2000 always followed their scores. Here in Slovenia there was no channel on which I could watch them play, so it pretty much sucked. First two years I was watching on Croatian tv when their game was on and then the high speed internet arrived to my house. Last 7-8 years I probably missed only around 100 of their games, what's pretty good cause of the time the games start here. My 4 years of high school were amazing. From 3 am -6 am watched a game and then went to school, I was like sleeping for 4 hours a day that time.

The first year I actually cared about pro sports was in the 97-98 season when Jordan won his last title aka Timmy's rookie season. Was a bigger Robinson fan than Tim to start. Nobody in my family/none of my friends were Spurs fans. Most were Laker fans, but my dad was a Laker hater so I picked that up early on. Liked the Spurs because at first because I was a big Raiders fan and the jerseys had similar color schemes. Yeah, dumb reason, but then after watching I became a big Admiral fan and was enamored by defense, which the twin towers brought.

Being that I was in LA and as a kid the internet was pretty limited, I never could really watch Spurs game unless they played LA teams or were nationally televised. I would read the newspaper sports section cover to cover every day, so I did keep up on standings/box scores. Was a big math nerd, so the numbers were my fav

I actually started watching the NBA in the 90s, and it is 100% due to Reggie Miller. There was no NBA TV or anything in Argentina and ESPN only showed a few games every month. I liked all sports but I wasn't and NBA fan, until I saw Miller take over a game. I knew the league Stars of course but I didn't watch NBA on a regular basis. After that Miller game I became an Indiana fan (maybe the only one in Argentina).
Few years later a guy named Ginobili went to the Spurs, so I had to switch teams.
So, Indiana, the Spurs and Denver (I have family there and had the opportunity to watch them live...im talking Earl Boykins!).

I moved from the Philippines to San Antonio in April 1988. Boy it was hot and my first fast food was not a burger, but from Taco Cabana. Seriously I grew up playing basketball in Subic near the Naval Base and I've watched plenty of Magic and Bird, Jordan and Wilkins. But who are the Spurs?? 21-61?? What, do they play on their boots?? But comes Admiral fresh from sea duty, and did he turn it around 56 wins! I was a fan since then. I now live in Los Angeles, and have been booed plenty in Staples wearing my Ginobili jersey. But I love my Spurs. Why? Because I love basketball and the Spurs exemplify the best game of basketball.

1973. I lived 4 doors down from Rich Jones on Willow Moss. He was one partying dude. I got to meet a bunch of old time players. I cut his grass for him. Jerry Grote, catcher for the Mets lived around the corner. I delivered the Express back then. Gervin was on my route. Got my drivers license in 1975 and started going to a few games each year. My brother and I could drive downtown, park, buy 2 tickets, a coke and a popcorn each for $10. I grew up with Captain Late, the Bruise Brothers, Kenon, Mitchell...good times!

Right around 1989-90...it was Robinson's rookie season. We had one of the old satellite dishes(big ufo looking ones) and I'd search for an hour sometimes through all the different channel frequencies, looking for basketbAll. I was 8-9 at the time and have always played ball. Living in Wisconsin, the bucks would have been the logical choice....however, I couldn't take my eyes off drob. He would beat the guards down the floor, catch alley oops dunks(reverse style), and block anything at the rim. I was hooked. even though the 90s were as tough as they were(tough as a teenager, when you care most), it was all worth it and still is to this day. I love this team and feel very lucky to have gone on the ride I have and continue on..

Robinson will go down as my all-time favorite player..with Timmy closely behind. Hate to say it, but td would most likely be enjoying his successes in another jersey if it wasn't for David. Big Dave was/is the man. It's sad that he has been forgotten like he has, and with him went the true center position.

mid 90s. I had moved back to Texas, and while visiting family in SA, saw the Alamodome :cry up close. I was a Laker kid since being born in Cali, and for awhile I liked both the Spurs and Lakers. I always liked Jordan but wasn't a Bulls fan because I had no connection to chicago. Then I want to say from the early 00s onward, my appreciation for the Spurs has grown while my disgust for the Lakers has also grown.

I have connections to both Cali and Texas, and prefer certain aspects of Cali over Texas. But ultimately, I love the family feel, under the radar vibe of the Spurs while I have realized that the Lakers have grown into an ugly, soulless thing under Kobe. I simply couldn't go on supporting them considering how douchey their fanbase has become. Maybe their fanbase was always douchey and I was too young to notice.

In fact, it probably doesn't make sense but I think my appreciation for the Spurs has grown more in the past few years, even though they haven't won shit. While winning their championships, I was always rooting for them hard even though I was just lurking here. I specifically remember '06 ruining my vacation with Ginobili's foul. But in the past few years, I suppose I appreciate it more because i realize the Big 3 era is coming to an end:depressed.

Pretty much since I could remember, but when Five O got there I started going to more games.

I have a second cousin who was a roomate of Kurt Rambus at Santa Clara. At times, Rambus would send tickets down to the will call booth when the Lakers were in town...sat right behind the Laker bench, but cheered for the Spurs:)

I remember the obstructed view seats in the old Hemisfair Arena...if memory serves me right, I was at a double overtime game when the Spurs played the Jazz in '91. I think that was the same night that they put Bush Sr. on the jumbotron when Operation Desert Storm began...the Spurs lost that game :(

I was at game one of the '99 finals against the Knicks. One of my favorite games was the first round of the playoffs in '99 when the Spurs played the Lakers and Kersey hit the end of the first half half-court shot.

Ouch...I was at the game the night D'Rob got the MVP award and the Spurs lost to the Rockets.

I was there for the somewhat famous Spurs/Suns game where a little know Steve Nash fouled AJ hard and Avery made his famous "I will not be mishandled" comment.

After dealing with the pain of Run TMC and losing to the Blazers and then the Rockets, that first title was special.

I don't get to see many games in person much at all anymore.

$9.95? Damn, I thought I remembered First Choice being $29.95 for good regular season games in the 90s. Thank god for the 99 lockout that wiped out the PPV games league-wide.

I'm still pissed about dropping $49.95 for PPV to watch Rodman jack up threes in a must-win game 2 of the 95 WCF. Maybe it wasn't $49.95, but it was almost double the price of any other First Choice game I had ever seen advertised since the Spurs looked like they were winning the title that year.

I've been following the Spurs since the late '70's (born in 1970). We lived in Texas, but not San Antonio, so I had a choice between the Iceman and the Spurs and Malone and the Rockets. I picked Gervin. Robinson cemented the connection when he came along, and it's grown from there. (I was in college when David joined the Spurs.)

Not being local, though, there was limited actual watching, until the last few years. I'm loving LP BB. The only Spurs games I can't get without going out are the ones on TNT (and I'm not getting cable back just for those).

I started watching the NBA in the mid/late 60's. Then there were only 3 or 4 channels on TV. Some of the older men in my family liked BB so when the games were broadcast on Sunday afternoons I got to watch. Basketball was the only thing on TV that could keep me from going outside during the day. There would only be one game a week on TV, if any, and I think they were broadcast on the "Wide World of Sports". The TV games usually featured Chamberlain and/or Russell. When Lew Alcindor came along around '70 he took over the league and then he was always on. George Gervin got me hooked on the Spurs in the mid 70's. His 10 to 12 foot finger rolls were just as entertaining and intriguing as Alcindor's sky hooks. They were also more difficult for my money. Any stiff can make a hook shot in a few trys, but just try a 10 foot finger roll and see what happens. Though sex, drugs and rock 'n roll pushed the game to the back ground in the late 70's and 80's, I came back. If you've ever read my post you'll notice that I try not to take the game too seriously, at least nowadays.

Let's see, I started obsessively reading articles in the Austin paper about DRob and the Spurs in third grade, which would have been '92. Must have started watching them around that same time, whenever my mom would let me stay up past my bedtime. :)

The first time I really remember following the games obsessively was in the '94 ('95?) playoffs, I was at a Boy Scout camp during the Spurs vs Rockets series, listening to the games on some crappy handheld radio some kid brought, feeling like the world was ending because Hakeem was going HAM on DRob. Sigh, good times. :(

In 1972, I knew there was a possibility the Dallas Chaparrals would fold and S.A. was making a bid to bring the team to S.A. I started listening to them (Dallas) that year and then easily followed them as the Spurs when they arrived. George Karl was our point guard, James Silas was our shooting guard. Tom Nissalke was the head coach. Koby Dietrick came off the bench as our 6th player and seldom started. Terry Stembridge was the play by play announcer. George Gervin played for the Virginia Squire of the old ABA League, until we traded for him. As a military person I got a huge discount on season tickets. Bought 5, as I had 4 kids. Moved away in 1974. Go down once or twice every year to watch a game since then. For years my license plate in Maryland has been "SA SPURS."

The rest is history.

like any kid growing up in the 90s i was a jordan fan...who wasnt? i also was an even bigger penny hardaway fan...lil penny was just too damn cool. with that said...

1992 was when my dad took me to watch a live game. I saw the tallest guy on the team who was the also fastest guy on the team running, dunking, blocking. that is when i became a david robinson fan. the fact that he was so humble and giving also drew me to him.

i remember the PPV days...i was in 6th grade and me and my little brother would stay awake and listen to the games on the radio. sometimes we would miss the ending because we had to go to sleep, but i would remember waking up and instead of watching cartoons, flipping to the morning news and crying to the bus stop because those fucking jazz knocked us out of the playoffs for the millionth time. God I hated those guys!

I remember the first championship in 1999. oh how sweet it was after all those years of getting crapped on by Utah and Houston. I remember going to the airport when the team came back. man that trophy was shiny!

my greatest moment as a Spurs fan is being in the SBC center for GAME 6, 2003 NBA FINALS. watching the man that made me a Spurs fan, retire in a blaze of glory. I will never forget that night.

Before the Spurs arrived in town, the Houston Rockets played a few of their NBA games in S.A. (never understood why). I do remember one game in 1972 when the Rockets played the Lakers and there were hundreds more Laker fans in the stands than Rocket fans. The owner of the Rockets got really upset and said they weren't coming back. Some home game, huh? Rudy Tomjonovich played for the Rockets then. He was known for that "off the backboard corner shot" that Tim Duncan also is known for.

1977ish. But not really watching them. Spurs were rarely on tv. It was through the magic of transistor radio.

1991 or 1992. I was just in elementary school. I had my first robinson jersey from JCpenny and I remember it was big and looked like a dress on me.

Hard to disagree with that ! Absolutely the same thing.

1989

I was 3 years old at the time. My poor parents lol. I made them turn on the radio to listen to Jay Howard every home game (since they were blacked out) from 89-93, til I was big enough to shoot on the 10 foot rim outside. I acted out just about every shot as the game was going on on my small 6-7 foot hoop in the living room. Been a NBA/Spurs nut every since.

I started in 99, but took a little break until 2003. I traveled for a year so didn't follow the NBA until I got back in 2005. Got relocated for a job in 2006 so I really couldn't watch the Spurs a lot until 2007 rolled around.

Been mostly off for the past 5-6 years.

74-75 - ABA days - Got to see Dr. J, McGinnis, Dan Issel, David Thompson play against those great early Spurs teams with Gervin, Silas and Larry Kenon. If you didn't get to see Dr. J or George McGinnis in the ABA days, check it out on YouTube. Scary!

more or less the same here but I started to be interested to the Spurs through The Admiral. I remember a cover page of David in uniform in one of the magazines.

1987....when they sucked really bad. Names like Alvin Robertson, Dallas Comegeys (spelling), Frank Brickowski, Caldwell Jones, Zarko, Greg Sutton, Greg Anderson are a few of the names that come to mind other than the usual...

:pctoss

I remember POS Paragon cable forcing us to pay to watch games from '91-'93. Could have sworn they did it with playoff games as well. I always went to Fatsos or Baby Dolls to avoid it. Figured I was better off spending that money on beer.

Bingo. Same here. TV didn't really come in until the late 80's and '90's. And that was only the occasional national TV game and then the playoffs. It's really only been the last 3 years that I've been able to watch most of the Spurs games.

(Now I'm able to watch the Spurs games on LP BB, minus only the ones on NBA TV and TNT. I get the ESPN games through WatchESPN app through my ISP. I would miss the two Cav's games, but it's not hard to spoof my location.)

Only started around 2006 when I was 8 years old. I became a BIG Timmy fan. Watched a lot of old Spurs games (especially the championship runs '99, '03, '05) since then.

1987, I was a senior in high school and was really impressed with this kid from the Naval Acadamy.
He was drafted by the Spurs over the fact he had to serve two years in the Navy.
So I followed the Spurs and their players while they waited for the Admiral to arrive. Johnny Dawkins
Alvin Robertson , Cadillac Anderson , Willie Anderson , Walter Berry.

Was born in San Antonio in '85, so I remember the Spurs as long as I have lived. I think the first Spurs game I went to was in '92. Would watch occasional games with my parents, stuff like that. I still remember when they won the '99 championship, I was at my Grandmas. As bad luck would have it, her TV had died earlier in the week, so we went to Walmart and bought like a tiny 18-inch TV, and the whole family was huddled around that watching the clinching game. Great memory.

I didn't start really consistently following the Spurs, however, until the 2002-2003 season. I still remember the night when I really fell in love with the team. My brother worked at Bjorn's at the time, and had gotten a couple tickets for the Clear Channel suite box. December 11th, vs. the Mavericks. The AT&T (then SBC) Center was brand new. Spurs won 111-104. Tony Parker went off for 32, which was his career high at the time. I've been hooked ever since, watching every single game that I can. Of course, Spurs went on to win the title that season (going through the Mavs on the way), which was amazing.

I developed a love for the pro game while going to school in NY in the 50s. So when the Chapparals started coming here as a rental I was one of the few that went to the games at first. After the team was purchased and officially became a San Antonio team, I got my best friend to go to a game with me. He's a short little guy and never had anything to do with BB so it was a hard sell. I had to buy his ticket. We got drunk, had a great time and bought season tickets at half-time for the rest of the year. Ultimately we added tickets for the family as well. We kept those tickets behind the Spurs bench for over 20 years and rarely missed a game.

My older brother (who also introduced me to this site) got me watching the spurs just by watching himself and me being in a close proximity. I remember fully "investing" in them in the 2004 series against the lakers. Perfect timing.

First time I watched the Spurs was 2001. I'm from the Philippines, and my uncle from California, who was visiting, was rooting for the Lakers. He said that he'll give me 20 pesos if the Lakers win, but I have to shine his shoes if they lose (I was about 10 or so). I remember the only NBA players I knew were Shaq and Kobe, and they seemed unstoppable. Nonetheless I did the bet, and I won, with me being amazed at an unfazed, fundamental Tim Duncan. Ever since then, I've always started rooting for the silver-and-black and for #21.

We sure picked a great team to follow all these years!
